I'm trying to help a friend in Wisconsin find a broadband provider but it's not easy finding any broadband comparison sites for the US as they all seem to default to the UK being as that's where I am.
Any ideas?

O.K. From experience.
Try to avoid Comcast. It's fucking shit. Blocked ports, ad spamming (if you don't have a router you'll get ads that look like critical stops 24/7) and torrent blocking. For years they have broken the laws but are so powerful noone can do anything about it.
Roadrunner (aka Time Warner Cable) is pretty good, MUCH cheaper than comcast, same speed (around 8mb on average) but still does traffic shaping and torrent blocking. You can get around this, but it's a pain.
Verizon DSL. Pretty good. Not as fast as it's cable counterparts and not alot cheaper, but does offer a better upstream for VOIP like Vonage and competition.
And that's pretty much it in honesty. Comcast are identical to Virgin really. Have a stranglehold over most states (esp East Coast) and take the piss with pricing, but there's no contracts which is nice. They also do the fibre optic service Virgin are bragging about now, but that was only in PA.
In Wisconsin you won't have choice of all 3. It'll either be comcast or Roadrunner as your cable and Verizon as your DSL. America really doesn't have the choice we do here which can suck at times, but a trip to Best Buy usually ends you up with a free modem and or router. Good old rebates !
