Some particularly stunning examples of holophonic sounds — where two channels of sound, delivered over headphones, are carefully mastered to fool your ears into hearing them as coming all around. As the first track explains very well, these are made by the deceptively simple technique of making a dummy head out of resin and placing microphones in the dummy’s ears to replicate how you would hear the sounds if you were present in the recording study.

Note that the major drawback of this technique is they only work when your head is still. If you turn your head whilst listening to it, the sound moves as your head turns even though real sounds would stay fixed. Shaking your head whilst listening to these is a good way to totally confuse your brain.

Remember you need headphones, these won't work over speakers. The first two of the four samples are the most impressive.

Can't check it out now but I will at home. I have an orbital tune remixed in 2 channel sudo surround sound knocking about on vinyl.

I really fancy a USB turntable to rip my records to mp3s.

The older example I heard (from the 70s, I think) worked much better for above and behind, but I wasn't using ear canal headphones back then. Today those bits just sounded like normal flat stereo, but the other stuff was well spatialised, as expected.

I was getting really weird "pressure" effects on my vision, like my head was being squashed. I wonder if the microphones were closer together than my ears are.

Still, the brain's brilliant, eh?

There's a Venetian Snares record, Huge Chrome Cylinder Box Unfolding, that was originally mixed in 12.6 surround; 6 speakers around the ceiling, six between the ceiling and floor and six subs. I really want to hear that properly.

It works really well if you close your eyes. I jumped out of my skin at the ending.

At the start, I found myself wishing people in the other corner of the office would shut up so I could hear it clearly. Oh, the lulz!

I played the Virtual Haircut for the missus a while back and she FREAKED OUT! She didn't get as far as the ending. I'm glad she didn't tbh, she might've died from shock :D

Virtual dentist would be horrible. They'd have to construct a jaw with teeth etc. for the sound to vibrate up to the microphones, but it'd be worth the effort.
