If I plan to watch the TV episodes in order, is it going to spoil anything if I see this now (I've not seen the first film)

Certainly.

The film is okay, but many of the series episodes are miles better.

Early x files was lots of fun, I was quite into it back in the day. It went downhill after a few series, then there was a series (I think 4 or 5?) where they suddenly realised they could do comedy and had several brilliantly funny episodes. Other than that though, it went the same way as all long-running US serieseseses: long and tedious arse-pull stories designed to milk the formula for all its worth.

I watched it too young. One of the first episodes about the stretchy guy (Tooms?) has me staying away from grills/cattle grids/vents/chutes for years.

Tooms was great, aye. He was in two episodes. The x files was at its best when it was coming up with demented, silly but somehow creepy ideas like that.

Whether (and when) it went downhill or not seems to depend on who you ask - for me there were more weaker (or rather, less good) episodes in season 6 onwards, BUT there were still a hell of a lot of great episodes up to the end of season 8. Season 9 (final season) was a real stinker though.

Oh yes, it was season 6 that had a fair few funny episodes (as opposed to earlier seasons which simply had a smattering).

Well that's the thing, I gave up by series 8, because seriously, eight serieseses? No story is that good.

The West Wing made seven, and that's one of he all time greats. Can't think of any that made it to eight though.

The X-Files finale was a massive sucky bag of donkey dicks.

Yeah, when it went downhill it did it big time!

Still, a huge amount of goodness was to come before that happened - it had many really excellent stories which hold up very well today.

Oh yes, and the pilot episode even has Gillian Anderson in her underwear - what more could you want? :)

I didn't really like the attempt at humour - the circus freaks episode springs to mind (despite Gillian Anderson's cleavage)

I think I got part-way through series five before losing interest. I do intend to go back to it eventually but I'd not have a clue where I left it as the episodes were getting less and less memorable.

Favourite episode would probably be the one with the bloke with the powers of suggestion.

My brain factors out Gillian in her underwear in the pilot episode, only so I can fully enjoy the experience afresh each time I watch it. Mm.

X-Files Season 1 episode at the beginning, fact fans.

'Pusher' - season 3, episode 17 (don't worry, I looked it up :) )

Damn good episode though.

That would be a no. I saw this recently and see this more of a post script than anything else, would have made a good mid season 2 parter for some of the later seasons rather than a film.

The first film on the other hand uses the whole alien colonists and government conspiracy mythos story arc so you'll need to watch from season 2 onward for background on this. Its better than the second film but requires more back story to explain it.

A clip show, ffs, though to be fair Stargate got away with two of them in its 10 season run, just never as a finale.

Incidentally, if you were into the x files'ses first few serieseses, you would probably find the "extraterrestrial's guide to the x-files" pretty amusing. I certainly did.
