I'm going on a stupidly dangerous pub crawl in Cardiff tomorrow with a crowd of mates, we call it 'Pipes & Ales'. We've been doing this at the end of every January since 1999 and we have added one pub on each time. Our new itinery:

11:30: Ramons Restaurant for breakfast

12:15: The Tavern
12:45: The Mackintosh
13:25: The Pen & Wig
14:10: The Central Bar - spirits only
14:35: The Vulcan (don't close, The Vulcan! *Sniff*)
15:15: The Traders Tavern
16:00: Los Iguanas
16:45: Kiwis
17:20: Zero Degrees
18:00: The Cottage
18:35: The Prince of Ales
19:15: The Old Arcade
19:50: The Rummer Tavern
20:35: The Goat Major
21:20: Dempsey's
22:05: The Gatekeeper
22:45: HM The Queen's Royal Vaults

Two friends are staying over the weekend from this, from up North. They've floated the idea that we three go for a nice walk at St Fagan's National Welsh Museum in the morning and lunchtime, and join the party at 3:15. Is it a sin to avoid certain harm and wuss out the opening stretch? No one could possibly have anticipated that each October AGM would have voted to yet again add a pub! We only started on about seven or eight for the love of Job.

Either way, expect a bunch of drunken, pipe smoking oafs speaking in a 1920's mannered way celebrating David Niven et al staggering around Cardiff tomorrow. Stoke Your Briar! :hat:

So, what suicidal pub crawls have ye done?

As Mentioned elsewhere, I did a monopoly board pub crawl back in 1996, for my mates 21st. (The Day England played Scotland in Euro '96)

We started at 11:00 but only got as far as (I think) Picadilly. Where we were refused entry.

Good grief. I recognise almost none of those names from my time in Cardiff. Mind you, I guess I tended to lurk around the Adamsdown/Roath area rather than go into the centre all that much. (The owner of the Splotlands used to put up with hordes of students roaming about the place, drinking Brains. We even filmed in there one time.)

EDIT: And I used to live just out of shot of here (to the right).

I was born in Spit, sorry Splott. Then went up in the world to Ely :S

I'm ashamed to say I recognise more than 3/4 of those pubs and I haven't lived in Cardiff for 21 years.

That is an excellent list of good pubs in Cardiff, not to mention Ramon's!

You'll be utterly bollocksed by The Old Arcade, assuming you haven't stumbled off with some aged slapper at Kiwi's or become shitfaced on the surprisingly strong stuff in Zero Degress (beware the mango).

Enjoy yourself, you madman!

Kiwis and the Wyndham hotel were affectionately nicknamed the Parachute Club when I lived in Cardiff, as you were guaranteed a jump.

I assume this is some sort of regional vernacular, but I suspect I know what it means.

Hard landing in the morning, though?

If the only thing holding you in the bed was the arm you've just had to chew off, then yes.

I was in the Rummer. I sang the song 'Stoke Your Briar' and everything. However, I was not in the Pen & Wig. This is because myself and two friends went to St Fagans National Welsh Museum thingy first. I'd done the full run before when it was a mere 15 pubs, and my mate John blankly refused to go and do it all. I agreed with him, as 17 is pretty mental. I joined at Zero Degrees, making nine pubs - plus an additional 'punishment pint' equalling ten. I was pretty wasted by the end, and am feeling the consequences today.

I feel a mild shame not doing the full run, but I have done it before and it's not pretty. Highlight of the night? Probably the exuberant toasting in The Cottage, which inevitably descended into hilarious loud toasting of notorious people such as Saddam Hussein and Robert Mugabe, and, dangerously, concluding with Edwin shouting out "To Peadophiles!"

Yikes.
