The 8 bit challenge nears it's final end so thoughts have turned to how to improve it.

Please nominate games for inclusion in this thread. We'll then put it to a vote and the top 12 games will be played.

The rules:

Nominate a max of 3 games per person including the format.

You can choose any 8 bit home format.

The game *must* have a high score function of some description (so we can verify scores).

You *must* be able to play the game online.

This thread will remain open for nominations for one Earth week starting now.

To help here are some sites you can play 8 bit games online:

http://java.cpc-live.com/

http://c64s.com/

http://www.worldofspectrum.org/

NOMINATE AWAY!

OK, as nobody has nominated their 3 games yet, I nominate:

Mined Out - Sinclair Spectrum
Kwik Snax Dizzy - CPC
Commando - C64

Closing date for nominations is Monday.

1) A single game may take too long, but if not I nominate GhostBusters!
2) Super Pipeline II
3) Umm... I need to find another :D

(all on the C64 of course, as that was the superior home computer)

We've already played Super Pipeline 2 though, although on the CPC. So not sure how people would feel about wheeling it out again. Anyone have any thoughts?

Ghostbusters probably won't lend itself to the compo as the stuff that gets the most players are games you can have a quick blast on. + Ghostbusters has no high score table and games can go on forever.

HMm.. I shall have to come up with more.
I was looking for an online version of Wizball on the C64, as I have fond memories of that. Can't seem to find one tho (but was looking late last night in a hurry)

Okay i'll have :

1) Jet Boot Jack on the C64

I had not realised it actually got a 64 release , and always thought it was an Atari exclusive :

http://c64s.com/game/101492/jet-boot_jack/

2) Encounter

Another great atari game but we'll play the inferior C64 version :-)

http://c64s.com/game/1178/encounter/

3) Finally my favourite atari platformer , but this time on the spectrum since i cant find an online playable version of it on the c64 - Bounty Bob Strikes Back :

1) Cobra (Speccy) [edit - was Ant Attack]

2) R-Type (Speccy)

3) International Karate (C64) - I reckon this over the probably superior IK+. A bit too obvious?

I'm assuming that games by Ultimate are out as they can't easily be played online, otherwise a couple of the lesser known ones like Trans-Am or Gun Fright would be good.

Actually can I make a suggestion that your allowed *one* offline nomination - has to be c64/amstrad/spectrum and you have to have a link to the rom ?

If its going to be voted on anyway only 'popular' games will make it and its more likely to make some of the 'cant be bothered' group play if its at least something that everyone can agree is a classic ?

If people want to nominate an offline Speccy game then that is probably OK. Speccy is easy, the other two tend to scare people away.

So nominate 3 online and 1 offline Speccy game.

Any more for any more peeps?

Come on, it's not beyond the wit or wisdom of anyone here to suggest 3 great 8 bit games from the sites I posted above.

If you can't be bothered, then just nominate an offline game.

I'll go for 3D Deathchase. Can I think of another couple over the next 24 hours?

Couple more Spectrum games -

Roller Coaster
Commando

I was going to include Sgrizam but it doesn't have any kind of scoring unfortunately. For the masochist, you can play the game here
(QA IO with P to use your sword).

wtf? ?:|

Edit - I know Dinamic stuff was hard, but that's taking the piss.

Edit again - Actually I think this is running at stupid speeds on that link. If I set it to run at "full speed" then I'm dead within half a second of starting the game.
The speed of the timer on "Normal speed" suggests it's still going a bit fast.

Nah, the speed seems about right - it was a pretty quick game. Once you get the timing sorted, you can get through a few levels but it's still brutal!

A few levels? I don't think I've hit anything yet. :'(
I'm just going to assume my mighty pc is running it too fast because that will make me feel better. :(

On the java version I only killed one bloke so I'll assume it's easier on a real spectrum and not the fact that my childhood spectrum skills have utterly deserted me :(

Well I just went to the effort of downloading it and playing it on zx32 and it's still really fast. :(
I'll think I'll go along with the "it's easier on a real spectrum" line of thinking too. ;)
