Really.

Some gems:

Quote:
This bunch of criminals go around stealing things and generally doing lots of violence.

And

Quote:
Let me just say now that I have never personally known of a healthy relationship between a white man and a woman of colour.

She's awesome, but is HAS to be a wind up.

No one can be that stupid.

Some of that is very scary, and accusing Joss Whedon of being a rapist and raping his wife (and then trying to justify such a statement by claiming to use the 'radical feminist definition of rape') is just unbelievable.

To be fair, it accuses everyone in there of being a rapist (even Wash, for fuck's sake). She's got issues.

Like you've personally known of a healthy relationship between a man and a woman?

Is she, perchance, a fat ugly lesbian?

So: no, not fat, and not ugly. And not that bad at singing, TBH (although the tune was crap). Broken in the head, though.

Oh god. I started reading the comments in that thing, and now I want to commit mass murder.

Why do some women insist on devaluing themselves and, more particularly, other women? To say that any woman is being raped if she has sex because society subordinates women is to resrict all women to the role of subservient, and is immensely patronising to the rest of womanhood who are quite happy with the way their relationships work.

What often pisses me off about the more nutjob end of feminism (the loudest part, these days) is that the central tenet of "women should be free to do what they want" comes with the caveat "as long as it's something we agree with". I saw some amusing responses to a post by a happy working prostitute on Guardian's CiF by some feminists explaining why feminism meant she wasn't allowed to choose to be a prostitute, and nor was anyone allowed to choose to be a stripper or anything else other than, it seems, a whiney dungaree-wearing kill-joy.

Did you see the article in the Guardian last week, about "The lack of available men for women over 30"?

The crux of it, was that men over thirty and unmarried, are more likely to be fucking 21 year old girls. I laughed.

I'm hoping Rodafowa turns up for this, personally. I'd be interested to hear his take on it, seeing as he's the only member I know of who actually has some knowledge of feminism rather than just "what I read on the Guardian website".

I think we've found our niche right there. We can go for the Daily Express demographic.

Not ugly? I beg to differ - she ain't good looking by any definition I'd care to use and her rigid cretinous view point makes her ugly to the core.

She's not as physically ugly as I expected her to be. God help any man that tries to fuck her, though.

Indeed. "All male-initiated intercourse is rape", according to her. So you'd have to run off shouting "chase me! chase me!" while dressed as Sandi Toksvig to be in with a chance of rape-free sexings with her. That might be too high a price for some.

The girl writing that piece isn't ugly, she's just normal-looking.

Sorry, off work sick so not really in a fit state to reply fully. But seeing as you ask, like.

I love Firefly. But at the same time there are aspects of it that trouble me from a feminist perspective. There seems to be a certain amount of Joss Whedon wanting to have his cake and eat it - he'll give his series empowered female characters, but still dress them in short/low cut/tight clothing so that they can be ogled at the same time. But hey. Ain't none of us perfect, and it's possible those are compromises that needed to be made in order to get his shows made. In both Buffy and Firefly, the episodes that leave the sourest taste in my mouth (the whole arc regarding Spike attempting to rape Buffy and her later forgiving him for it, and "Shindig") weren't written by Whedon.

So yeah. I've got issues with Firefly, those issues line up roughly with some of the points the blogger was making (Inara's role and Mal's relationship with her in particular), and I don't want to demonise her for stating her opinion forcefully. Feminism's not a monolithic unified groupmind in which there's one agreed-upon orthodoxy that everyone adheres to. I can see where she's coming from, but from my perspective - and, I feel reasonably safe to say, from the perspective of pretty much every other feminist I'm acquainted with - she's overstating the case by a fairly wide margin.

If you want this sort of thing, but on a national newspapers website, search on Guardian.co.uk for Bidisha.

Or they're exercising their rights to dress how they want, of course. A lot of women I know enjoy dressing in a feminine way, an denjoy being looked at. But then certain strands of feminism, as I alluded to earlier, don't think that right should extend to things they disapprove of. This is usually couched in fairly patronising terms such as "you're not choosing to wear that, you're conforming to what men want you to do".

I appreciate in this instance we're talking about fictional characters in a TV series dressed by a wardrobe department, but still.

Tight clothing isn't that unusual in real life, and Inara is usually wearing fairly modest clothing by some standards, btw.

I can't see the problem here, unless you're of the opinion that all prostitution is bad, and no woman can ever freely choose to be a prostitute, no matter how hard the prostitute may argue otherwise (I'll dig out a CiF column where exactly this happened). Which goes back to the "women are free to do what they want, as long as feminist orthodoxy agrees with it".

I like TV shows where ladies don't wear many clothes.

Oh, and I'm trying not to be humourless PC Brigade here ('ello 'ello 'ello, what's all of this insensitivity to other cultures and perspectives goin' on 'ere then?), but this "bet she's fat and ugly" business really does make you come off like absolute wankers.

I have become increasingly interested in examining Joss Whedon’s work from a feminist perspective since I had a conversation with another lesbian feminist sister

I got this far.

Really? It's a semi-valid point. Often people who rail most against something are those who aren't getting it. It's an ulterior motive, if you will.

And it's odd that women are allowed to make exactly that sort of comment about men, without it being a problem in any way.

Did you see the article in the Guardian last week, about "The lack of available men for women over 30"?

The crux of it, was that men over thirty and unmarried, are more likely to be fucking 21 year old girls. I laughed.

Did it say how long those men over thirty had to wait for these 21 year olds to come along? Just out of interest.

Sorry. Really not in a fit state to get into full debate mode, so I'll cover the bullet-points and sod off.

And that's the point. We're not talking about real women, we're talking about characters in a TV show.

That was more directed at Buffy, to be honest. No, tight clothing's not that unusual. But if you're spending your evenings running around fighting vampires, wouldn't you be more likely to go with a tracksuit than a miniskirt and halter top?

It's not that she's not allowed to freely choose to be a prostitute at all. It's prostitution portrayed as an aspirational lifestyle choice that seems slightly icky.
