Be Excellent To Each Other

A long while ago, possibly at the other place, I posted clips of conversions of Space Harrier on obscure computers. To remind you, our favourite was the PC 8801 version from Japan with lightening fast simplistic Speccy style graphics and almost totally authentic music.



Well I found another obscure Japanese conversion. It's the PC6001.

Tries to be authentic, but I don't recall the arcade version featuring the bonus level with the Harrier riding a giant upside down space cock. But hey:

You know how sometimes you read a thread title and now at once who posted it, without flicking your eyes over to the author column? This was totally like that.

Like the Alan Rickman thread that Shin posted? Oh, hang on.

I would love Space Harrier on Xbox live or a modern remake please. Or Planet Harriers, as I have never played it.

I'd love to play Planet Harriers... I've never had the opportunity either.

I'm fairly certain Space Harrier was the first arcade game I ever played. I always remember going on family holidays and pestering my parents as they played on the fruit machines* for money to play on the videogames and they'd always say no because they were a waste of money (because there was no possibilty of winning anything back). Finally they agreed to give me 20p to play on something, so I sauntered straight over to the massive hydraulic Space Harrier cab, shoved my money in and promptly lost all my lives within about... ooh... 20 seconds? I started to see what they meant about it being a waste of money after that.

The next game I ever played was Out Run, and the experience was roughly similar, being as I had no clue what the gear stick was supposed to do.

*I appreciate I've made my parents sound like horrible chavs. I can neither confirm nor deny these allegations.

I found it very hard when I first played it at the age of about 8 as well. Got better with age though. The last time I ever played it in an arcade (possibly in Brighton) I had a small crowd watching me as I cruised past the bonus stage.
