Do any of you run one of the Grid Computing programs? I've run most of them in the past at various points and it's occurred to me we probably have a lot of BezzieCPU power sitting around idle. Anyone fancy making a BeeX/BETEO Group for one of them?

I know of;

SETI@HOME
Folding@Home

I'm sure there are probably waaay more than that.

I used to install Seti@home on all the servers I used to look after. Schools don't have much need for the processing on them even during busy times.

I'll see if I can sign up to SETI at work.

Have they *still* not found aliens?

They're an amusing diversion certainly, but (for instance) if you were going to leave your PS3 on doing the cancer research I can't shake the feeling you'd be far better off not doing so and donating the £15 you would have spent on electricity to Macmillan.

Do Macmillan search for aliens? No.

Is it? Because as far as I know cancer research doesn't involve looking for aliens. What good is that?

I'd say Folding@home is probably the best one to join.

So I made a team.

For anyone who want to help out, we're team 158191 .

My PS3 is currently running folding@home, and has been for about a month, I think.

It, er, doesn't have much of a ring to it, does it? How about "Team Mutant Zombie Ninja Bezzie BeeXers" instead?

The name is actually "Be Excellent To Each Other" to avoid the BeeX/BETEO thing...but it asks for a team number to assign work to rather than the name ;)

Why isn't there a grid computing system devoted to finding Maddie? I'm outraged by this.

Wait, unless maybe... OMG aliens could have taken her!

Only completed units get added, so presumably only Sheepeh has actually completed one yet. Mines still on 3%, so it seems that either I've got a huge work unit, or my PC is much slower.

I'll add my PS3 to this endeavour when I get home. Since being on the happy pills I've developed an alarming ability to suddenly nod off whilst playing games and the like, so I've got my PS3 set to boot up Folding@home whenever it's been inactive for 30 mins.

Erm... can't remember? They recently upgraded PS3 Folding@home to 'Life With Playstation', which has a rather pointless news service bolted on. I think there's an option in there to have it autoboot after a set time.

I actually changed the original post from 'steam-based' as I was expecting bad puns.

I'm aboard. But couldn't we conceivably be using this computing power for better ends - ie, work toward Bezzie world domination or such?

I keep forgetting to turn this on. I couldn't work out how to get it working via BOINC, which starts up automatically, and couldn't work out how to make this one start automatically. One day, I will be bothered to learn.
