I have to say, I barely touch my heating during the summer but if I'm at home I'm forced to have it on almost constantly at the minute. Christ knows what the impending gas bill will be.

It's all a government plot to get us out of the credit crunch. Do your bit for the economy - kill an OAP and then spend any inheritance you get on consumer goods!

Us too. If it were just us without the kids, I may just wear more jumpers, but the kids'll freeze into little kidsicles without the heating on all night. And what with being a Grade II listed building we're not allowed to put in double glazing or any other sensible measures like that.

My heating continues to do my head in... the stupid control box is set to switch off at just before midnight and yet the other night when I couldn't sleep I heard it switch itself on and start heating the house at 3 in the fucking morning. Even though the control box was showing 'OFF'. FUCKKKKK

Fortunately, it's quite sunny today and the house keeps the heat until 4pm.

Unfortunately, the missus will sit buried under her fuzzy blanket complaining she's cold until I point out the heating is on.

Is your boiler outside the house? My mum's is in the garage and it has a 'frost protection' thermostat thingy that turns it on when it's really cold outside, regardless of what the internal timerbox and thermostat are set to - which sometimes makes it VERY hot inside.

Nope, it's in the airing cupboard in the second bedroom. This odd 'switching itself on' behaviour doesn't seem to be triggered by the outside temperature. But I wouldn't be surprised... even if you switch the control box to the 'off' position it still will run the system occasionally to keep the house at 5 degrees to stop everything freezing up.

I expect a fine ruby port will warm the cockles, old bean.

I love how pensioners dieing has become like a unit of measurement for extreme weather.

I bled the radiators today.

I'm on the wagon this month, annoyingly. I'll get pointed and laughed at by Mrs C if I crumble earlier than her.

Our new heating system has already managed to half-fill the radiator in the room above the boiler with air. I was going to buy a key while at B&Q getting some washers, but they only had brass ones. For more than £1.50, for fuck's sake.

So that radiator is still half full of air and probably fucking up the rest of the system, not that a brand new installation doing that sounds at all healthy to begin with.

I bled mine the other month. Might do it again, for fun. Other than that, I jsut stick the thermostat on to 20 and leave it like that.

See? I told her this was a bad idea. I can always get new kidneys.

Sounds healthy... lot of air in that water and the pipes. Give it a few months and it'll (should) get better.

And yes, actually, 3 acres will generate more than enough firewood for even a badly insulated family house. Envy mode on.

It is cold yes. But I have been in places very much colder.

On 2nd Jan 2008 I left Ohio and headed for Maryland (600 or so miles). I decided to leave @ 2am because my nerves were shot and I knew I wouldn't sleep.
When I hit West Virginia I hit a snowstorm, actually a bilzzard. I stopped when hearing this on the radio and put on my Aber&Fitch jumper (wool and about an inch thick) and my South Pole coat (see pic.. Pure duck down.. like a mobile sleeping bag)



And was still shivering even with the heat on full in the car. About 3 hours in my windshield wipers failed and I couldn't see. The beams & fogs just lit up the snow making it look like I was doing a warp factor in one of those sci fi movies. So for about 3 hours I could go no faster than 15mph.Any more than that and my tires would totally lose traction and my car would slide around with no grip whatsoever. Then I got to a garage in WV and tried in vain to unfreeze my wipers from the windscreen. I couldn't do this with gloves on so I ended up having terrible pain in my fingers for hours. I figured the washer fluid was empty so filled that and went on my way.. Whilst doing so I duly noted that washer fluid freezes @ -45c.

Anyway. The pump was totally lifeless and I figured it had broken. It took me 15 hours and 30 mins to finally reach Maryland and when I did my car looked like this.

It had been so cold that the banding around my tail light snapped when I tried to clean them and was hanging there..



Luckily it was MUCH warmer and snow free in Maryland, and the next morning my wiper motor kicked back in and started firing slush all over my window. It was then that I realised that the fluid had frozen, and to my shock I realised it must have been at least -45c outside of my car through that blizzard.

And to that ends I will never, ever complain of it being cold ever again.

I remember one time when NJ went under a state of emergency and pouring coffee onto the ground was fun because within about 2 mins it was a ice patch.

It would make the weather reports more interesting to watch I suppose.

I'm sure it does get much colder than the UK over there, but neat washer fluid freezes at about -10 at best. Stick some in your freezer and try it.

Ha, sadly no. It's half an acre ish. The next place will be 3 or 4 acres, but that's a couple of years off yet.

Having said that, we've got a good few acres of national trust woodland behind us anyway, which I scav from.

I know how you feel. When I walked home from school in the winter I had a scarf over my face to stop my nostril hairs freezing... think of Luke Skywalker stumbling across the surface of Hoth and that was me.

We used to get ice two inches thick on our driveway, and on several occasions the car was frozen to the driveway (which, unluckily, sloped downwards).

So you put the spoiler and associated tack on after that trip then?

At least you got your money back from the plastic surgeon

The bathroom is so cold it's unbearable to be in there more than 3 minutes-sod having a poop, it's frozen anyway!

Oh, man. If I had a fiver for everytime Coffey posted that car, I'd have... well, about £20.

It'd almost cover my costs for a year's Live subscription, though.

Yeah. Basically the car was all shaved and skimmed for me, that was how I wanted it.. I spent about 3 weeks despoilering it (boot had to be hammered and everything from where the old one had warped the boot)

All the tat went on in order to get the best price tbh.. There aren't really many people who mod up coupes in their 30s so I knew it wouldn't sell to a rich spoiled kid..

Worked quite well, got about $4000 for it

I slipped on the tarmac and then I fell over on my bottom and it hurt.

That does indeed bloody hurt. Worse so if you had no idea the fall was coming.

Once at work when I was in the US it snowed like a bitch and I got out of my car and was looking at my alarm remote and not looking where I was going. Hit some ice and came down like a ton of bricks, cutting my hand and breaking the alarm remote in two.

I ached for about a bloody week.

I had a new boiler put in tail end of 2007, the plumber (really nice guy, and if you live near Plymouth I reccomend him highly) said that the boiler will come on for 30 seconds or so every hour just to make sure everything works ok. So I wouldn't worry too much.

If only it was this just that. This is it running for hours in the middle of the night, pointlessly heating the house and wasting money.

I thought I had that one night. I noticed that the boiler was set just above off, so it would keep on coming on trying to vainly heat the room up at 1% power. Could it be that you have something similar? or perhaps that the controller has packed up, and the boiler thinks you want to heat up, but you don't? Maybe your thermostat's batteries need changing?
