Christian Bale gets very angry on Terminator 4 set

Excellent expletive-laden rant from Bale here, as the Director of Photography apparently interrupts an emotional scene that Bale is filming.

Not sure if it's justified or not (the tabloids all make him out as the bad guy of course, but other sources say the DP deserved what he got).

Regardless, it's always fun to hear a big star go a bit mental on set.

I have to admit, he comes across as the bad guy as he doesn't let it drop after the guy apologises a dozen times.

I presume he was angry because he was on the Terminator 4 set.

He has a rep of sticking with accents permanently while filming. I've seen him give interviews entirely in his Bruce Wayne voice. Great actor, bit of a prick IRL

You can't hear the Director of Photography because the microphone feed is from Bale (which is why he sounds so loud).

The DoP is supposed to know what to do and what not to do during a take, and he kept talking back at Bale which is why Bale keeps banging on about it. If the DoP had just shut the hell up and apologised it would be a 30 second MP3 instead of a 4 minute one.

I read some third-hand reports yesterday from other crew on the set who thought the DP was in the wrong, so perhaps there is more here than meets the eye. Maybe wandering into the shot twice really is an outageously stupid thing to do - it does seem like a pretty dimwitted move on a major Hollywood production. It also appears that the DP of Terminator 4 hasn't been fired.

As for his accent, Bale is famously excellent at accents, and does interviews where he changes accents halfway through for yuks. I've never heard him speak with his native Welsh accent.

I have it on good authority from friends in the industry that any DoP (even those working on low-budget productions, not Hollywood ones) will know the "rules" and will know NOT to walk on to the set during a take.

If he wanted to adjust the lights, he should have waited until after the take and then asked for another take with the new lighting.

Bear in mind that film shoots are often on very tight schedules, and stress runs very high. Bale is also famous for getting very serious about his parts (look at the way he crashed in weight for The Machinist only to bulk straight back up again for Batman Begins) so it stands to reason that he's going to be serious about this one too (even if it is only Terminator 4)

I'm not saying he's completely in the right, but he's quite entitled to chew out a DoP who clearly doesn't know what he's doing. The DoP is probably earning about $10K a week, for that money he should know what to do and what not to do.

But Booker dismissed the idea of British roles for British Actors, adding: "These accents must be allowed to flourish. They are little works of art. A bit like a someone playing the trumpet really badly."

Meanwhile the recording also revealed that Bale remains a miserable, aggressive prick who is unable to handle the stress of being paid millions of pounds for dressing up and playing pretend.

I always thought it was a bit rubbish but assumed that I must be wrong because Americans don't seem to have a problem with it.

They also don't have a problem with "could care less" (original joke: fine. Seemingly the entire populace picking it up and running with it seriously and thinkinglessly: LESS FINE).

I'm relatively happy these days to leave them* to their linguistic foibles, but taking something perfectly functional and removing any semblance of sense I can't abide.

Given that a fair chunk of Americans have no idea that Laurie isn't American, and that Laurie demands multiple takes if he hasn't got the accent exactly right (even when all his co-stars are arguing otherwise), I doubt it. Very few actors can pull off an accent successfully and consistently, but Laurie is someone who can.

Frankly, Lena Headey also does a pretty good job—I wonder how many people who watch The Sarah Connor Chronicles wonder what the fuck is going on when they hear her Huddersfield twang in The Brothers Grimm.

My wife and I had no idea that Dominic West was British until we saw him pop in A Christmas Carol one day. He even manages a very bad British accent while playing an American, which is an interesting trick.

We also didn't notice that Idris Elba was British, either. Dodgy accents could probably get past me for the most part, but to fool her means an accent must be good.

I can't think of a single instance of an American actor doing a convincing British accent though. I guess it's because we hear a lot more American accents growing up than they do British and also that it's more common for British actors to move to the US than the other way round.
