So first things first. I am an idiot.

No that is out of the way, let me explain. I have a piece of Marketing research work that needs to be handed in tomorrow at 3pm, and I started it just a little while ago. I kind of forgot about it, as I concentrated on my dissertation. It's worth 40% of the module, so a decent chunk of my degree as a whole.

Here is the premise:
"Critically evaluate the adoption of a survey-based methodology compared with an experimental methodology for researching the Effectiveness of Advertising."

Basically, say what is good and bad about these two types of marketing research.

Survey is exactly what it sounds like, surveying a sampel of the population, and making inferences based on the results.
Experimentation is changing an independent variable, and looking for a change in a dependent variable, so, for example increasing the prices on football tickets, and seeing how it effects sales.

So, I will stop by to report every hour or so, and let you guys know how it's going. I have a mate bringing me a textbook in a bit, and he is going to give me some advice.

Edit: I currently sit at 152 words. 10% of the way there.

I once left a 5000 worder until the night before due to the exact circumstances you're in (dissertation and all that). Still got a 13 from it though *buffs nails on jacket* So... yes.

It can easily be done - the question here is can it be done well? That depends on your knowledge of the subject, chap.
Also - you're choosing to do market research? Eww.

Oh yeah, totally doable, I am not that stressed, I just know I am not going to sleep til it's handed in.

If I were worried, I wouldn't be taking the time to make this thread.

Yeah, I mostly know it.

Eh, there is a lot about my course I don't like, but I do like it as a whole...sort of. I'm basically 2 years in now, I'm not going to drop it, even though I don't enjoy large aspects of it...

1,500 words. I always worked on the assumption that in an hour I could produce around 800-1,000 words for an exam question.
Do your reading and planning this evening, then sit down at 09:30 and give yourself two hours, as if it were an exam.

Eating first! :hat:

Edit: not a bad idea, but I haven't been sleeping well recently, I'd prefer to stay up and get it done tonight, hand it in first thing, then sleep in the day (not got anything else on).

Yeah, dead easy. I can do 2k words with no knowledge in 24 hours and get a decent grade.

This forum kept me alive whilst I was pulling all nighters and despairing at the world. And for that I thank it.

But from experience. Unplug that ethernet cord and only plug it in when you need to look something up.

Otherwise you'll be a time wasting.

Also: Don't do that if your machine has internet troubles or something.

GOOD LUCK!

I regularly do 3000-worders at the last minute (sometimes having to do all of the research for an essay on the same day that I write it). Bafflingly, my degree's actually going really well.

You'll be fine, mate. With a 1500-word essay, you're usually ready to conclude by the time you've made four or five strong points.

LewieP, I hope you reform yourself to be a conscientious nerd who hands in work early in future. :p

I get annoyed with students on Facebook who leave as their status messages along the lines of "OMG I like is SO stressin' over this assignments, need to get drunk LOL!" over, say, mere one thousand word assignments. Think, you fools! If you manage to enter a professional career, and you skive over relatively small projects like that (where there there are 'answers' waiting to be assembled from the reading), then there's no hope for you, no hope at all, nnoooooo.

Nah, you write your conclusion, and then work backwards from there.

My old English teacher used to tell us to write our essays out, then cut up the paragraphs, and move them around to create a better flow of thought.

We had to tell her about these great new things called computers.

I've just realised that the last update I did of skeptobot (which was just a way to accept that I wasn;t writing proper articles on any of those things, and that I need to start again) was 1200 words. So yeah, 1500 is a piece of piss. Even with spell checking.

Glad you got it done though. Kudos.

Just looking at some of things I used to do when I was a reporter.

http://clanbase.ggl.com/news_league.php ... 40&lid=887

1460 words there, I did that in under 30 minutes. (I am "The Stranger" by the way) granted some of that is just repeating a scorebot, but I did far more detailed reports (that I cannot find atm which really vexes me) in about the same sort of time frame. Basically I'm saying that number of words is pretty easy to come up with in a short time period.

Yeah, I actually have already hit 1,500, but it still needs work. There is a bunch of stuff I still need to fit in, and I know a bunch of it isn't particularly well written. It's gonna be dense, succinct and full of academic bullshit hoop jumping by the time I am through with it.

Well, I am now at 1,420 and it is not far from complete. I now jsut have to decide which is better, surveys or experiments.

I don't have a preference, and I can make a case for either equally well. Next to post decides.

Edit: the 1,420 includes title and references, which I don't need to count. It is actually more like 1,300.

Surely the best response is to say and "so X is better choice in these circumstances, Y is a better choice in these circumstance and both methods have to thoroughly understood by the business man in his shirt and tie when he wishes to do Z so that he can choose the best method for his specific situation."

Well, the piece of work was "in scenario X, which is better? Y or Z", we were told to just pick one (it didn't matter which) and make an arguement for it. It's only a relatively small piece of work I guess...

And yeah, experiments won.
