It seems SEGA and THQ are working on a brand new OutRun racing game.

That's according to the OFLC, which is the official media age classification body for Australia.

The OFLC website provides the name OutRun Online Arcade, and claims the game will be a multiplatform venture for the two companies. XBLA, PSN, WiiWare perhaps?

Given the name, and the "gaming experience may change online" warning, we expect online races to be at the heart of the project. There are no further details, however.

We're chasing both publishers for comment, so hopefully we'll know a bit more soon.

And we hope this does turn out to be true, because, as we've said before, SEGA is a dab-hand at five-minute racing games - as proven by OutRun 2006: Coast 2 Coast, the most recent instalment in the series.

They did redo it for the arcade, I seem to remember, but it never made it to home consoles.

Planet Space Harriers?

Oh, Planet Harriers.

Not much info there.

I guess it was shite.

I was already aware of this info, they slipped up and confirmed it was the plan on a French TV show or something in the summer.

Which is now -- it's reviewed in Eurogamer today (7/10, they fixed some of the worst offenses in the 360 version).

I can't tell you how many times I have prayed before I went to bed for Daytona 2 and S.C.U.D race.

I don't know if it's a licensing thing, or whether Sega really don't see it.

Instead we get rehashes of Sega Rally (which was good in 1995) and Outrun. Now I grant you, Outrun 2 and C2C are stunning games, but I want me some Daytonaaaaa

I think the biggest trouble with seeing a new or ported Daytona is that they would have to relicence it from the speedway. Outrun they get for free. This may also explain the lack of Sega Rally in port form, as well as Manx TT and Sega Touring cars.

Sega Touring Cars is pretty much the worst racing game ever though, so no great loss there. And I say that as a man who loves Sega racing games and Touring Car racing, but, fuck me, that game is shiiiiiite. I remember the day I excitedly bought it for the Saturn, and had my dreams turned to shit before my very eyes when I got the game back home. I remember the day I finally found an arcade cab and excitedly had a go, figuring the awful Saturn version must've just been an exceptionally bad port, only to find that it was indeed an exceptionally bad port... of an exceptionally bad game.

Daytona, Manx TT and SCUD race ports would be highly awesome, however.

The 360 Sega Rally is excellent - I'm not sure why it doesn't get much love here.

I loves it! It was one of few 360 games I re-purchased on PS3 when I sold the 360.

Yeah, but you sold your 360 and kept your PS3, so I'm not sure that makes you a good judge of character.

Ooh, I'd forgotten I own that one. I might have to revisit it as I've hit a brick wall with Ridge Racer.

I can't actually dispute this. Also, speaking as someone who shunned the PSX for a Saturn, then the PS2 for the Dreamcast, reading UK: Resistance makes me feel like a traitor to my own kind.

Outrun they have to pay Ferrari, surely?

Also I loved Sega Rally 360, and it's even more awesome when used with the wheel.

Notice that several versions of Outrun haven't had the Ferrari :)

But yes, they would have had to for Outrun 2 etc. Thing is, EA's exclusive Nascar licence might prohibit a Daytona licence and Toyota and Lancia may not be willing to grant a licence for cars they no longer make for a true Sega Rally remake.

The Delta Integrale is in GTI Club+, for instance. But was it the Stratos in SEGA Rally? Or was that just SEGA Rally 2? Having said that, Lancia don't make anything anymore...

As for the Corolla Celica - it's in Gran Turismo/Forza innit?

In Forza, it's only the newer Celica that's in the game. The older Celicas - i.e. the ones that were actually used for racing rather than just being road cars, aren't in there. Strange.

Not really. The majority of the vehicles in Forza are production cars.

Yeah, but the other Celicas were production cars too (well, produced for homologation) so it just seems odd that classics like the original ST185 and the ST205 aren't in the game, but the shitty SS-II (like what I've got) is.

Well it's dang obvious to me that new incarnations of Outrun (2 and C2C) used Daytona 2's physics and handling.. C2C even had one of it's tracks. (excuse me if it was in OR2, I had a ps2 so had to wait for my thrills).

It has to be a licensing thing in honesty.. But quite why they paid up for the frankly awful DC version (even though it was stunningly pretty I admit) yet wouldn't stump up to bring BOTE to console and or PC is pretty baffling..

Now, I do remember that $ony managed to hamstring Sega when they released that rubbishy Porsche Boxster game. Something about no other system at the time being allowed to have a Porsche in it, which ruled out SCUD on Saturn.. Or something like that any way, I clearly remember the blame being pointed at $ony at the time.

And yes, Touring car was atrocious.. Point your tank handling Volvo into the corner, bounce it off the walls with non existant steering and hammer up the next straight on your merry little way.

It's just a shame.. And nah, don't want Nascar 200x. Simply as it's too realistic, doesn't involve space like power slides and bouncing off of sonic walls in order to get your times below 16 secs on the oval.

And the missing cheesy Jpop is an absolute no.

In the first Daytona I loved the arcade one. It was brilliant.. The handling however was uber hard.
That's why I loved the Saturn and PC versions because they included the blue car complete with it's swinging ass and 'OR2 handling'.

Sadly on the DC all of the cars were very skitchy and hard to control, and the handling was super duper sensitive and even after hours of fiddling with it in the config I couldnt stop the cars from handling like they were in a pan of chip fat.

Maybe like Ridge Racer I just didn't get the handling.

Ah yes, it did suck on the pad, to be fair. It was most excellent on a wheel though. I still have two Dreamcast wheels tucked away in my attic.

Umm, yeah, probably. One of them is (I think) the official Sega one, the other an expensive Madcatz one which is actually rather nice.

However, it's bulky and not worth much, so it's debatable whether it would be reasonably posted.

I also have two Dreamcasts, you know. Plus two lightguns, half a dozen pads, and a wallet full of ISOs.

In fairness that's what I heard. And tbh that means it was a very good port, something to be commended..

I'd liked to have built some kind of wheel and pedal contraption, because I could never seem to be the gymnast it seemed you needed to be in order to use a wheel on a console.

I saw this metal contraption once, that you basically clipped your wheel and pedals to, it looked awesome :)

The only game I have ever really solidly cracked with a wheel was NFSU, bombing around with the wheel bolted to the desk and the pedals on the bottom shelf was really good, surpassing the pad (manual gears were much easier with a one click up and down gearknob too).

I want me one of them ferrari thrustmaster jobbies. Play had them at 17 quid but theyre all sold out :( Theyre 35 in game.
