I'm sure many of you are aware of this game.

It was probably the most blatant Super Mario rip-off ever when it was released for the C64/Amiga (can't remember if it came out on one or the other, or both), and I think it got pulled from the shelves when Nintendo threatened legal action.

Thing is, it was an EXCELLENT rip-off (if memory serves), and with so few decent 'old-skool' scrolling platformers on the DS, this version (with updated graphics) is very good news as far as I'm concerned.

Not out until June 2009 though. Bah !

i think it's completely needless nowadays. Giana Sisters was relevant because C64 users couldn't play Super Mario. Now with all the Mario (including the emulators) on the DS, why would i play a floaty rip-off when i can play the originals?

I liked the Giana Sisters, but found it strangely creepy and disturbing.

It was a shonky load of old bollocks that dazzled idiotic reviewers because they hadn't seen anything like it before. The CPC port was an utter abortion and the others weren't much better. Frankly if you hate that smug italian plumber (as I do) then you'd rather burn your eyeballs out with a red hot poker than play that shit rip-off.

7 bananas for the original and that's generous frankly.

I like the Great Giana Sisters.

A mate of mine had it on his Atari ST, and when his other friend rubbished the music, he made him go home.

I liked it at the time on the Amiga, as it was the nearest I was going to get to SMB.

There is already a homebrew version for the DS - someone posted a link on WoS, I think.

My memory is that the Speccy & Amstrad versions sucked, but the c64 version was okay. No idea about the 16 bits.

I imagine if it's got a slightly more responsive controls, fixed the scrolling etc, it'll be just fine.

I do love a bit of c64 gaming, but Giana Sisters was and always will be a piss-poor rehash of a much better game. That it still seems so beloved by the Commodore community is a source of bafflement. It even tops best of system lists quite regularly. FOR SHAME.

Yep, I just found it today (not tried it yet though). It's the C64 version and you can find it here along with a homebrew version of International Karate :

Maybe that's true. I just remember my mate showing it to me on his C64 and me becoming rather addicted to it.
Might decide it's actually crap when I get around to trying the DS homebrew version. We'll see....

As for the new version, I think it looks quite decent. Graphics are nice & colourful, music is rather lovely, gameplay looks like good traditional platforming fun (plus there's 80 levels apparently, so it should last a while).
If there were loads of quality side-scrolling platformers on the DS (I played all the decent GBA ones when I had a GBA) then maybe this
wouldn't seem especially interesting to me.
There aren't though, so if this turns out to be a half-decent game then that will be enough for me I reckon.

By the way, if anyone still has an Amiga or C64 copy of the original game sitting in thier loft, I believe you can get a small fortune for it on Ebay.
