Was just talking about the 3D fad and suddenly remembered going to an exhibition in the mid 80's of hologram pictures. Think it was at the Trocadero. Lots of 3D images that you didn't need glasses to see. It was the future. Yes they were all silver but they were proper 3D that made you go "wow"*.

So why isn't there now full colour 3D images leering at me out of advertising boards etc? Why did we forget about these things?

* NB: At this time Harrier Attack made me go wow and the following year Space Harrier caused my jaw to drop off. Therefore they may have been rubbish.

Everything *was* holographic in the late 80s wasn't it? Think we just got bored with it.
I saw a big holographic poster advertising some 3D movie when I was at the pictures last week. And they're on every credit card..

The credit card ones are tiny though. I'm talking a giant advertising billboard with Jimmy Carr leering at you or something. It all just dropped from favour as 3D films probably will.

A client has a big TV that does 3D that doesn't need glasses. Its impressive when you first see it but then you realise the image is actually rather low definition and doesn't look real. Yes it's 3D but it is somewhat lacking at the moment. Expect to see more of those around though.

There used to be a hall of holograms at Blackpool tower.

I don't think they were silver, but green and black. I remember my uncle had a hologram of a snake or tiger, something along those lines It was qute large and used to be kept in the hallway. Everyone would be made to amaze at it as it cost him a bomb. It was really tacky.

Holograms were eventually shunted aside by the unstoppable behemoth that was Virtual Rea... oh, wait a minute.

I had a go on that at the Trocadero about 5 years after I saw the holograms.

I made a few holograms at university.

The first one I made was of a 2p.

Playing with lasers is cool.

Vanquish on 360 has an outer sleeve hologram of the box art. It makes my eyes funny. And the hologram. Ho-ho!

*cough*

That's not really a hologram, it's a lenticular image.

There was an arcade game I played in the early 90s that was holograms, but proper full colour ones. All I can remember is a cowboy duel where one shot the other and then the man fell down. To be fair I was about 6 or 7.

I kept putting my hand into the 'screen' to try and touch them, but it was sealed off by a plastic dome.

I remember that game! It cost me a pound for about 14 seconds of game.

I loved it. :luv:

Some better images on Klov plus some shots of the cowboy which you remember

(I also think I put £1 into this at some point in the past for 10 seconds of gameplay)

That is exactly the right one. It was an arcade down in Waterlooville on the south coast, so I've no hope of ever seeing one again. Ace pictures there. Good investigation skills, you both!

There was another game that used the Time Traveler hardware called Holosseum, which was a simplistic sprite-based beat 'em up. It wasn't any more fun than Time Traveler.

I remember YS "reviewing" Time Traveller in a late-period "shit, we've got no games to review - let's cobble together a silly feature instead" piece. I think they laughed heartily at it.

Where are my super-hologram optical media whatnots that can store huge amounts of data and be read from instantly? I thought we'd all be playing movies from holodisks the size of pennies by now.

Holograms at Manchester Airport. I hope this doesn't catch on, if it turns out to be non-fictional.
