I'm curious to know what people's thoughts are on this. Quite a few of the Bezzies I've played with long enough to call them by their first name sometimes rather than their Gamertag or forum name. Do people prefer to only be called by their "chosen" name or their "real" name? Are you bothered at all?

Personally the only thing I care about is if I know it's me you're talking to!

I was going to make this in to a poll but I think it'd be better with freeform answers.

I don't play on Live much, but I don't really care if anyone calls me Scarysheep (3000 optional), Paul (my real, actual name) or "that one who's shit at Burny Pee".

I'm happy to call you Carl, even if your name is in fact Dave.

I think my former gamertag and my post name speak for themselves with regards to how I feel about it!

On the other hand I'm concious of not revealing people's names. For example, I obviously know Meat Angel's real name, and I've heard people on Live use his first name but not his surname. I'm not sure if it would be bad etiquette to openly refer to his surname or not. In this specific case I doubt he cares, but in general I guess it would be a poor show. The counter example would be Grim..., who would prefer his alias not to link to his real name, even though a lot of us know it.

I demand to be called Loopdreams and would be very upset and a bit scared if any of you lot ever found out that my real name is Mark.

People still seem to refer to me as Dimmers even when they know my name :D I don't mind as I've been known as Dimrill since I was 15 or so. My real name is Mr Luxury Yacht (pronounced Throat Wobbler Mangrove)

Sheepeh - It's Thribble, not Flibble.

I always use internet names, even in person. It makes more sense to me. I might go as far as dropping the 'Mr' from MrDave.

I'm also fairly sure it's "there goes my" rather than "where's my".

DoctorGlyndwr. My usual second choice alias. My first choice alias, DrGlyndwr, is taken... by me, with a temporary live account I registered to test something and then couldn't delete again.

(far be it for me to point out it's just a few pixels down in my sig of course :hat: )

Im quite fond of the lacey panties variants that get pandered about.

but in general prefer aliases to be used, espeically as my sirname is quite uncommon
id be fairly easy to track down. The amount of profanity and racism that i usual spout forth when playing yank kids on COD...well...one day that might grow up and hunt me down.

speaking of which do people still do tuesday night COD?

Heh. I did, yes. BECAUSE IT WAS REAL LIFE NOT TEH INNERNEH.

I made an exception for "Kizzy" because her real name was wrong.

Last week it was every night, again. I still haven't recovered from Duke Nukem 12 hour Wednesday.

My username was already taken on Live and couldn't be arsed to try variants so I just went with my website name as I figured it'd be available. Mind you, any variant would be more interesting than my real name of John. I tend to get called DM by lazy typers.

I'm sure that was me. I hate using internet names in the real world.

If I've met someone I'll usually use their real name online, or if I play with them a lot (fnar).

I had 14 odd hour Burny Pee with Dave day, then 12 hour Duke Nukem day.

I would like to play Burny Pee or CoD though. I'll play anything, me.

I'm the only Owen [SURNAME] in the world, as far as I can tell, so I try not to use my real name too much. Rev's fine, Owen's fine, but my surname is fairly private. Kind of. Ish.

Especially as I'm still getting gay porn links in my Google results, years after they stole my name from Usenet.

If someone is referring to me or addressing me or talking to me I prefer my name, which is David, or Dave - DBSnappa, though it has a certain ring to it in abstract, is too clunky to be used in conversation and I also never think of myself as that, so I always stop if someone refers to me as such. I didn't put a great deal of thought into my tag, it was just my initials and a gag in what I did/do for a living.

When people have asked my name on live I've told it and half the time people use it. I don't mind either really, but know this: It will be the last word you utter if you don't obey my sexual demands.

Knowing what is behind that [REDACTED] block, I can confirm that The Rev speaks truth here. There are three Richard Gaywoods, so clearly you win at names. Damn.

DBSnappa wrote:

To clear up confusion, you are a Dave, not a David. HTH.

This is so strong that once, in one email address book or other, you were listed as David and about twice a week I would type "dave" into the address bar, stare dumbfounded at the lack of your email address, curse, backspace over the "e", and add "id". So strong is the you==Dave thing that I did this dozens and dozens of times without ever learning to just type "David". Ergo, you are a Dave.

I'm impressed you remember anything.

But, to answer the original question - if anyone called me Matt over XBox live, I probably wouldn't realise they were talking to me. Thinking about it, I'm probably called Grim... more than Matt nowadays.

A majority of my actual friends call me Dudley or Duds these days so it really doesn't matter to me. Of the people on my xbox live friends list, only a couple of workmates would use my real name and my brother would call me "Bruv" thanks to it being very amusing when Phil and Grant did it on Eastenders a decade ago and us never knowing when drop a meme.

I tend to change between all possible names I know of a person pretty much at random but I tend to use whatever I first know someone as. I like using nicknames though, you don't really get to choose your real name, generally a nickname is something you've chosen yourself*.

* Except in my case actually, but it was certainly my choice to continue using it post Grammar School when any relevance it may have ever had was long gone.

Pod started as an "internet name". My friends at school cottoned onto it and started calling me, in jest, Pod, and I would call them by their daft names. Roll on however many years later and I get called "Pod" just as much as my real name. I used to live with someone who called me Pod 99% of the time, and I'd onlt known her about 2 years. It's quite odd really.

I imagine the same situation happened with Gaywood. So much so he got it deed polled.

I'd say only use real names on the forum if the person in question has already revealed it. I know a few forumites' names which I've come across in real life which I wouldn't use here, for privacy's sake.

If I know someones name I will normally use that when talking to them, if it's written down it would more likely to be their alias instead.

Well this was early on, so I guess you would still remember it.

For me it was:

One of those strange guys I met a few hours ago: So what's your real name?
Scary-looking bearded bloke that just came over to the table and sat by me: Nick
Other scary-looking bearded bloke that I recognised as being Grim...: Is it?

I always used to use my full name as my account on forums. (**Edit not actually my full name - first initial_surname but posted my first name at the end of most of my posts anyway)

However after some of the ... err ... hate / threats / hassle that was encounted on one particular forum (which by a round about way is the one that got me to WOS) I decided it wasnt quite as important so went for an alias.

BTW i poped back on here after seeing a winning name which i thought i recognised on El Reg's page , and wondered if it would be postable since some people prefer to remain "Hidden"

I'm sure you can guess.

I tend to use a wide variety of names for other people, usually involving Sir or Mr and some version of their name.

The counter example would be Grim..., who would prefer his alias not to link to his real name, even though a lot of us know it.

Your discretion is appreciated - likewise, I only refer to you as richardgaywood as it's your choice. I only refer to (myfinger) as myfinger, for the same reason.

What boggles me is when some of our friends call me 'branch', despite the fact they would never have known me as that when it was in use.

I find it takes a bit of getting used to referring to internet people by their real names... and vice versa.

You think you people are important enough to bother remembering another complete set of names when there's drinking to be done?

Yeah that's always thrown me too! Nick and The Egg do that a lot, I've noticed. I must admit you stopped being "Branch" to me a long time ago. Someone (DBSnappa maybe) referred to you as Branch t'other day on the phone and I had to stop and think about who he meant.

Where did they get it from?

Actually, this isn't a discussion for here, really. Email me.

Some online names are too odd to say out loud in real life... or too embarassing (especially for the recipient)
