I need to find a widescreen monitor that my nephew can use for the 360 I've got him, also it needs to work as a computer monitor as he's just starting big school and no doubt schoolkids all need computers now. Cheap is good as is not completely shit, also it doesn't need to be massive. Anyone come across any suitable bargains lately? While I'm at it a semi-decent speaker setup would be good too.

There are any number of 22" analog-only TFTs for the £120 mark that would do you very well. That's about the sweet spot of size and cost at the moment I think. I've personally got a Benq one which is really nice.

Is that too expensive?

Something around that sort of price should be ok, the rest of the family will be paying for the monitor anyway but it'll be up to me to sort it all out.

Buy something that'll be a good computer monitor and get a VGA cable for that 360.

Yus. One with DVI and VGA connectors so they can both stay plugged in. Isn't xbox being updated too, to support more generic monitor resolutions? That would be handy.

The next update will properly support 16:10 yes, which is the likely aspect of anything you buy for this.

Most of these £120-£140ish 22" screens are going to be OK. The Fuji I linked to earlier, for example, has reasonable enough contrast and refresh time specs -- as far as you can trust those numbers, which isn't very far. And that monitor offers both DVI and VGA, so you can keep the Xbox and PC plugged in, as previously stated elsewhere in the thread. PC Pro have a roundup of big monitors here that should give you some model numbers for your shortlist. I'd take those models and hammer them into HotUKDeals.

AceAceBaby is right to point out that until the new Dash update in the autumn, all the games will be very slightly squished on these 1680x1050 panels. It's subtle but it is there (I notice it going back and forth between a similar monitor and my TV). It's not too annoying though and it will be soon fixed.

Before I got my HDTV I used my Samsung SyncMaster 940BW which has VGA and DVI and a nice button the front for switching, although if only one is active it'll auto-switch. The picture is hewn from raw awesome. ;)

I'd heartil recommend it as both a gaming device and a monitor.
