Like, really good. In a "Movies You Should See" kind-of way, I think we should all talk about how ace The Shining is.

Fucking ace. The acting was great (even the kids weren't bad), the tension was fucking huge and the "ooooOOOOooorrrgh" noise was terrifying. Was the Overlook a real hotel? I assume so.

Jack Nicholson was cruelly hilarious when taunting his wife on the stairs. That was my favourite bit.

Hmm - The Shining is one of the films I use to counter the argument that all films based on books are not as good as the books themselves.

Heh, The Shining was the first "grown up" film I saw - age about 9, I sneaked the TV on when I was supposed to be sleeping, at my Gran's house. I turned it on exactly at the "here's Johnny!" bit, and the maze chase, and then driving away in the snowcat.
Wow! It was years and years before I figured out which film it was, and 'tis still one of my favorites.

I reckon they're both really good, but for different reasons, despite telling much the same story, in many ways.

Speaking of Mr King film adaptations, has anyone seen The Mist? I'm quite intrigued, but the only showing is tonight at 9:20. Should I make the effort? It has got very mixed reviews.

I love The Shining. It's one of my favourite movies. I need to get round to watching the US version. I'm pretty sure I've only ever seen the UK version.

I saw it ages ago, downloaded it if I'm honest. I'd assumed it was a made for TV thing and as such judged it to be excellent, not sure I'd go to the flicks to see it though.

Hah, I went to read the IMDB of that, and it appears that the story is largely the same as "Graveyard Shift", which I'd forgotten about.

Graveyard shift is also a contender.

I'm ashamed to admit that I've never seen the Shining. I have it on DVD as well, but there are quite a few Kubrick movies I haven't seen yet which I have on DVD - I bought a boxset about three years ago as it got flagged up cheap at a ridiculous £20 for ALL his movies.

The girls are away for a couple of weeks from tonight so I have uninterrupted access to the TV so I shall put it on my list of movies to watch while they're away.

I also have this coming on Monday, so I might wait until then....

Funny thing about The Shining: The UK cut is almost half an hour shorter than the US one. I also agree with CUS about Book and Film stuff. They're both things I have to re-read or re-watch quite often.

The Region 1 SE wins for including the longer "U.S. Theatrical Cut". The DVD Beaver review has further details. Note however that the shorter "International Theatrical Cut" was endorsed by Stanley Kubrick himself.

There is controversy as to what the original aspect ratio is. Kubrick was known to prefer 1.33:1 over widescreen, but it's certain that The Shining was filmed with the intention of a 1.66:1 theatrical presentation. It was filmed on 35mm open-matte. Therefore, one can argue that an anamorphic presentation in 1.66:1 wouldn't have been such a bad idea.
