So, yesterday I did some moving furniture around in my office, which involved disconnecting my printer from the power and the network, stowing it out of the way for about 4 hours, and then plugging it back in again. However, now when I turn it on, the 4 LEDS (Power, toner, drum, and paper) flash about once a second, and when I hold the "go" button the paper light comes on solid red (usually this means ran out of paper, paper jam, tray's not closed etc).

I've tried pretty much everything and I cannot get this to work (taking paper out, putting more paper in, taking all the bits and peices out, cleaning the bit of the toner that can be cleaned - by sliding a blue thing up and down, checking for a jam, pressing various bit and peices with my finger and so on) Nothing has worked.

further thing to note, when I plug the network cable into the hub, the light on the hub is not lighting up, so iI guess it's not even got round to powering that side of it. I can't hear any fans, but then I wouldn't expect to normally, unless I was using it.

Have I b0rked it?

I know we have a couple of people here who used to work for printer companies (I know not brother, but I'm sure Zio mentioned something about common parts before)

Anything anyone can suggest before I take it to a repare shop, or more likely buy a new one?

Thanks

Malc

That's obviously some kind of bootup error it's reporting, but you'd probably need the engineer's manual to interpret what those lights mean. I'll see if you can download one from Brother.

In the meantime, I really wouldn't clean that bit of the toner! Is it a shiny blue or green roller? If it is, don't go exposing it to too much light either!

Or what devilman said! Sounds like you'll need to call them. At least it seems the image drum is a separate unit to the toner, so that's evidently not the bit you're trying the clean!

Yep. Their mono lasers are decent little work horses. Not quite up there with the HP's of old, but cheap, cheerful and half decent.

I hadn't

hmm, I looked on the brother site (I think brother.co.uk mind) and it all it had for my printer was the in and ex vat prices for if I wanted to buy them!

Thanks for that

I haven't tried:
Quote:
2. Leave the printer for 10 minutes with its power on.

yet, so maybe I'll leave it on and see what happens.

Thanks

Malc

nah it's a specific tab that you slide to clean something. it's recommended in loads of the guides I did find when googling for info.

Here we go:

Quote:
Slide the blue tab on the back of the drum and toner assembly back and forth several times to clean the primary corona. Replace the tab to its "Home" position (represented by a triangle) before continuing.

Well, I left this on over night, and still no joy, so I guess I need to find a brother repair type person.

:(

Might be more cost-effective to just buy a new one as printers seem almost disposable these days. Even laser printers seem pretty cheap.

Call them first and get a quote at least - I know Lexmark usually did fix rate repairs for out-of-warranty laser printers. Of course, as devilman says, for not much extra you'd be able to buy a brand new and thus more modern printer.

Yeah, unless it cost less than £50 say, then I wouldn't bother.

Might take it into work and see if anyone there can do something with it.
