Imagine a simple Sokoban style push-the-blocks puzzler. Now encode the rules of the game in some of the blocks, and enable the player to change the rules by pushing them around.
For example, maybe you start with BABA IS YOU and FLAG IS WIN. But you can’t pass some barrier to get to the flag. So you re-arrange to say BABA IS YOU going across and BABA IS WIN going down and... you win. Or maybe you go for FLAG IS YOU and now you’re the flag on the other side of the barrier, where you can make ROCK IS WIN and touch the rock to win.
I’m a chunk through and from these humble beginnings the game really Goes Places. It gets dramatically more complex and meta as it goes along. Earlier I had a rules block that itself operated on other rules blocks.
Best / most brain melting puzzle game I’ve played in years.
I guess I should add a small caveat, which I’ve heard from others and chimes with my own experience: it can be a pretty difficult game, and there’s nothing in the way of a hint system to fall back on. A lot of the puzzles (for me so far) you either solve instantly in a flash of inspiration or spend 15 minutes staring at with no clue whatsoever what you’re supposed to be doing. A couple of times I have resorted to making moves at random and stumbled onto a way forward, but not often.
On the other hand it’s ultra satisfying when you suddenly realise the answer. Or at least, an answer — I think a lot of these puzzles have multiple solutions.
There is a level select map thing that doesn’t demand you do every level, so you can bypass ones you’re hopelessly stuck on. And I hope we’ll see a well considered hint website to nudge you in the right direction from time to time.
