Seeing as there are quite a few ardent gamers in here, I thought I'd drop an invite in for this. Chris Stevens (SomethingWitty) is organising a Halo 3 multiplayer group, for various styles of play, the emphasis being on fun. Anybody interested, pop along to UGVM and put your name down - I suspect it'll be like shooting fish in fish shaped holders for some of you :)

Could be fun. I'm rubbish at Halo, however.

Usenet group, uk.games.video.misc

Sorry, I should have explained :/

With the exception of a couple of the players, most of us are pretty rubbish. This is being set up for the usual reasons of wanting to avoid potty mouthed teenagers who spend 8 hours a day playing Halo 3 online while consuming sugar and caffeine, hence making them good and angry ;)

The thread is called Testing the water: Another Halo 3 knockout. Though it isn't a knockout at all now. Anyway, like here, they're largely a bunch of very nice guys and gal (there's only one regular female, shockingly) and some of them are regs in here as well.

Apart from those three.

And, why?

Usenet is excellent. All web-based forum software is clunky by comparison.

To be honest, I'd like to play, but I'm not really keen on Usenet at all.

I think it would be a good thing, in truth. Most of these guys are 30 somethings who are at best the same as most of the members in here with regard to being reasonably well adjusted. What's funny is that there seems to be a collective antipathy from both ends now, which is a classic example of people not liking their comfort zones being impinged on :) In my experience, one of the downsides of online play for me is that I don't get an enormous amount of time to play games at all, so online play comes a very poor second. Consequently I'm not very good at it, so getting groups like this together with people who have real lives and don't play for 8 hours a day is a good thing as there's more chance to have fun without being ridiculed by some hormonally imbalanced 13 year old. Also, knowing that real life has a habit of intruding more and more as you get older, the more people in the mix allows more opportunities to get games with reasonable amounts of people in.

There must be a term for aversion to alien groups, I'm going to call it "groupism"

Well, if you wnat to play, surely you could hold your nose and go post in this one thread?

It'd be less of a hardship for you than when I signed up to WoS to play games with you lot despite my previous... dealings... with Stu, I tells ya.

How is Usenet web-based? Admittedly Google Groups is, and it's pooey too, but it's also an easy way for people to get on there.

Shall I draw some diagrams and write a long essay showing how "HTTP" and "NNTP" are not the same thing, incorporated the OSI Seven Layer Model, and then further illustrate how Google Groups is merely a client to an underlying service dreamt up before TCP/IP let alone HTTP? Or shall we accept you are being silly :hat:

Either that or we could take this to the duelling forum.

Yeah, Grim... is a silly sausage. Constituents of the Innerneh = web, usenet, telnet, email. Come on Richard, put those drums down and let's get him!

Pfft - NNTP is just a service that hands out information over port 119. Usenet is something made up. It's like inventing something like "MailNet" for internet mailing lists.

Constituents of the Innerneh = anything travelling across TCP ports, UDP ports, ICMP etc etc.

Going onto Usenet without Forte Agent feels like going to Afghanistan without an anti-towelhead bazooka.

A shame, as playing a bit of Halo 3 with NORMAL PEOPLE would be rather nice.

MOHH. I don't think my ISP (Sky) even have a Usenet feed. I was going to host a mini-feed on eggwan with just a handful of text groups I care about, ugvm and a.d etc, but our hosting provider flat out blocks port 119 sadly.

Not gonna happen. It was a straight choice between CoD4 or H3 for my bezzie mate FPS and I made the right decision there. I've never liked Halo.

Beex. I'm only an occasional lurker on ugvm; my heavy Usenet posting days ended when alt.digitiser withered. The Rev, however, he would have some divided loyalties.

This might make me actually play Halo 3 for the first time in months and months.

Though, of course, I'd be accidentally throwing my sticky grenades at team-mates due to beign thoroughly indoctrinated into CoD4.

Do we have anybody as good as buckskin? He has something like a million EXP on Halo 3

I'll get James in, he's quite tasty with FPSs.

But other than that, count me in - I can post a list of their gamertags if they don't all run off and hide the pussies

Me and Bobby used to be pretty handy.

I'm going to feel lost without my claymores, but CUS can attest to my skills with the Spartan Laser.

Count me in, although likewise I shall be team killing due to grenade, crouch, zoom, change weapon mix-ups. I presume we will be playing custom games, maybe we can turn off TK for a while?

Also, I don't have the latest map pack, and am not planning on purchasing it, as I don't play the game enough any more

I remember starting to play CoD4 and constantly lobbing grenades rather than reloading. It's going to be just like that, but in reverse, but not.

Right, itsallwater, Wullie and I (plus Bobby after I left) quite enjoyed some Halo 3 campaign last night. I was wondering if anyone would be interested in a one-off Bezzie night of this? We could do some Rocket Race and multiplayer shenanigans. It could be fun.
