I'm really beginning to notice the massive drop in Beexers.

I'm not quite sure what it was that caused them to all go away but couldn't we send out an email to all forum users asking them to come back?

We did something similar on a forum I used to visit years ago after there was a massive bust up and a surprising number of posters returned.

Shortly before discovering time travel was possible, MaliA died in the Robot Uprising of 2236. He was acting as a double agent and instructing insurgent androids the Craster Method. After several failed assaults, the rebellious AI had it worked out and had him executed for teaching his pupils to lie on grenades. His last words were "This is a better prize than any from the cottage quiz". His memory is tolerated by his wife, and consciousness encoded on to a cd for revival at time when technology is correct again.

Isn't it just more of the fact people drift away and either get busy or just lose interest in things? My experience of small forums is that they only have a finite amount of time before they fizzle out, it's happened a few times before.

We could offer an incentive like "Get the first 6 months for £6 instead of £12"... That kind of thing.

The weird thing for me is, despite hardly anyone posting, some thread views really skyrocket at times (I mean by a thousand or more in just a few hours). So either we have plenty of lurkers, or it's those spidery-Google-whatsits.

So maybe we just need to get said lurkers to post, we'll either be inundated by new blood or spambots. :D

I don't think it's that so much as it's that such things as internet forums are transient in people's lives. People's lives move on, their interests, likes, free times etc change.

I think those two things are very similar.

In some ways I think this forum has survived better than many others because it is so flexible to what people want to talk about, and very tolerant of all but the most extreme cases of trolling.

People move on, find new friends, forge new interests in every day life, and I don't think this is much different.

I think if I were to write to all of my old school friends asking would they please be my friends again and could we hang out and chat all the time they might think I was a bit odd and desperate. I think an 'amnesty email' says pretty much the same thing. People have left for a whole myriad of reasons, whether they've got bored, had a falling out, lost their Xbox, didn't like a poster, got married, had kids, a more demanding job... Sending a begging letter asking them to come back feels a bit creepy. I think if I had the same from a site I decided to leave for whatever reasons I had at the time I'd view it the same way.

That said, a few people left because they thought x was treated badly by y. If y is now no longer posting, then lEtting x know that couldn't hurt. Not sure how many PeDdle that apples to though

What's that going to look like from the site's point of view, though - that you'd never visit it even less?

But you'd be telling both peddle (peddle X and peddle y) to come back if you sent an amnesty email. It'd be chaos.

I think it might depend on the person's character. Think of some (only some) of the people that have come back to various forums after a call to action by poo stirrers and thread vulchers: the revel the opportunity to come back to forums and be shits.

I hope he won't mind me speaking on his behalf, I had a brief (digital) chat with him last week.

He's getting there, but still having a bit of a shit time - it's not my place to say why, though.

He's changed jobs and is moving house which keeps him pretty busy right now. I'm hoping to catch up with him in the not-too-distant future.

Yeah add me to that list also :)

BTW RE : the email. Couldn't we just send one out saying "Hey you've not visited for a while" or something like that? I can think of several people I would like to see again.

That email would also go out to people we've "asked to leave" or who have left of their own volition and made this place better. It's a double-edged sword. ;)
