Sega have recently announced their Sega Forever service. They're making a load of their back catalogue available for free (or a small charge to remove ads) and playable on your Android or IOS device.

It'll be interesting to see how mobile phones handle Saturn games but apart from touch controls, I can't see anything bad about this. They had some brilliant games in the past so it'll be interesting to see how they're received by a modern audience.

Here's the press release.

Quote:
SEGA Forever offers retro gaming fans an ever-expanding collection ofclassic SEGA games, available
free-to-play on mobile platforms. Each game is available for download as an individual ad-supported title, with the option to remove all ads via in-app purchase for $1.99 (regardless of original console generation).

SEGA Forever allows you to create your ultimate retro gaming playlist. Unlike previously released classic game collections, fans can set up a dedicated folder of favorites on their mobile device and curate a personal collection of retro games chosen from titles spanning two decades of SEGA history. The upcoming lineup will include games from all console eras, including:
SG-1000
Master System
Genesis/Mega Drive
Game Gear
SEGA Saturn
Dreamcast
First five games launch June 22, followed by new releases, each as a standalone app*, every couple of weeks:
Sonic The Hedgehog
Altered Beast
Phantasy Star II
Comix Zone
Kid Chameleon
Added features within SEGA Forever games:
Leaderboards
Cloud Saves
Offline Play
Controller Support
Community News Feed
SEGA Forever menu screen languages in English, French,Italian, German, Spanish, Russian and Brazilian Portuguese
Platforms supported:
iOS & Android (at launch June 22)
Availability:
Worldwide (excluding Japan, Mainland China, and North Korea)

I generally roll my eyes at yet another repackaging of decades old games but at least this time it won't cost anyone anything to play stuff for five minutes before realising how terrible 99% of it's been rendered by the passage of time; so fair play to them there.

It'd be nice if they expanded the service into Steam (they've already got a lot of their Mega Drive games there as it is), as I don't really use my Android devices for any kind of arcade gaming, just word/puzzle stuff.

Touchscreen controls for games designed for control pads? No thanks.

Some games - puzzle games and RPGs for example - will be just fine.

Street Fighter 2? Not so much.

Street Fighter 4 on the 3DS allows you to use the touch screen to pull off special moves at the touch of a button. Of course, it also has physical controls so I'm not sure what my point is here.

Anyway, I agree. Touch controls will be terrible on the majority of these games.

I forgot how a controller comes as standard with every smart phone.

Any good recommendations for an iPhone controller?

Got stuck into iOS R-Type with my boy when we were on holiday, and did ok but shooters and touch screens aren't ideal.

The 8bitdo controllers are meant to be ace. I've only had a quick glance at their website but I'm sure I read somewhere that they'll work with an iPhone.

I've not used it on there in a while but the 8bitdo bluetooth controllers worked with me on iOS

http://www.8bitdo.com/snes30-sfc30/

https://www.amazon.co.uk/8Bitdo-SNES30- ... B00VAQG5GQ

(I can see the Amazon link mentions iOS but its not mentioned on their main page so i'll double check - their page has pi greyed out but i've been using it on my pi without any problems)

There are some good third party controllers. However even the best ones only support a relative handful of the games that the platform has to offer, which is understandable but annoying.

For Android users I can highly recommend this

It's really sturdy in your hands, responsive and very much like an Xbox controller in layout and dimensions.

For Android users I can highly recommend just getting a USB OTG cable and plugging an Xbox or Dualshock pad in. Might as well use what you've probably got lying around anyway.

I use mine with the Gear VR headset so can't plug it in.

But otherwise yes.

Or actually just forego the cable entirely if you're using a PS4 pad as allegedly you can just pair it directly with an Android device:

For Android I have one of these :

65p :-)

and yes you can then use anything (although I again tend to use the 8bitdo with bluetooth on there because its good for SNES games :-)

The new Xbox One controllers are Bluetooth so maybe they'll connect to an Android device? They are quite expensive though so forget that idea... I'm just typing out loud as I'm extremely bored at work.

Get one of these:

Totally not a ergonomic nightmare and very reasonably priced.

Not very well: http://www.androidpolice.com/2016/08/11 ... very-well/

And no one has any of those lying around anyway so it makes no odds. ( ;) )

I tried my Xbone controllers with it - did it fuckers like work.

Edit - or the PS4 pad.

I have 4 varying sophisticated bluetooth controllers and had to buy another one to go pew pew in VR.

Totally worth it though.
