So I've seen this mentioned on NeoGAF a few times but I never bothered to investigate and click into a thread until today. I had absolutely no idea this even existed. It looks really good. And it's out next week?!

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vYG8moUy_rM

Has anyone been following this? I've only watched the above video, but it does a fine job of making it look good. It's basically GTA Hong Kong with Triads and stuff, but the combat looks like it'll put GTA's clunkiness to shame. And you can use the environment to fight!

Of course, it'll probably turn out to be a dud, right? No reviews yet as far as I can tell.

Who's going to be the BEEX guinea pig and buy this first? Where's Ian?

This is essentially True Crime 3, isn't it? The first two were dogshit - I wouldn't touch this with yours. If a True Crime game is so bad the publisher drops it, god knows what this abortion is like.

Not exactly! See this info from GAF:

Quote:
Sleeping Dogs was formerly known as Black Lotus before Activison decided to turn it into: True Crime: Hong Kong, unfortunately it was dropped by Activision as they thought the game would not sell to their expectations.

This is when Square Enix stepped in and decided to buy the rights to the game giving the new title of: Sleeping Dogs.

With a greater time frame with the the game, it has let the development team further polish the game under Square Enix's hand. It's developed by United Front with members previously working at EA Black Box, Rockstar Vancouver, Radical Entertainment and Volition Inc, most of the members have previously worked in open sanbox-box games.

But yeah, the True Crime games were dogshit. However the last one came out in 2005, so they've had plenty of time for that to not matter any more. Maybe. The video looks good, damn it!

I'm skint! I was actually hoping you'd take the plunge with your hefty wallet, and then I'd know whether or not it was worth living off beans for a month.

The last time I dropped £40 on a dud was... I actually don't know. Race Driver 2 on the original Xbox, maybe?

From Wikipedia:

Quote:
Work on a open world action-adventure video game began in 2008 by United Front Games, almost immediately after United Front Games was formed.[14] The game was meant to be a completely original IP called Black Lotus, however Activision (the publisher) decided that the True Crime name would help the game sell, so it then became True Crime: Hong Kong.

So it just had the True Crime name tacked on. Sadly it has had the opposite to the intended effect on myp.

It's developed by United Front Games who are fairly new but made up of a decent pedigree. So it's affiliated with True Crime in name only. Well, it was.

Dragon's Dogma. But only £25 so it doesn't count.

I've got no interest in this at all. I'll just get the DLC for Grand Theft which I still haven't played if I want to scratch a GTA itch. And I ain't itchy.

Seriously? Does anybody really honestly have any expectation that this is not going to be utter dogshit?

This is a game that Activision thought wasn't worthy of having the True Crime moniker FFS! :D

I've just clocked it.

It was absolutely awesome, you'll love it. I really cannot recommend this enough. It's solid, meaty, nourishment.

The official Xbox and PS3 mags both gave it 9/10. Although they seem like exclusive reviews since no others have been released yet, so take then with a pinch of salt.

4/10 is still worth buying.

I have to admit, I keep seeing it on Steam and feeling tempted.

Currently has a Metacritic score of 84, with 11 reviews (including from better known sources such as Gamespot and IGN). I'm definitely interested in this one.

The Gamespot review makes it sound excellent (much more excellent than the 8 out of 10 rating they give it actually, but who cares about the numbers) so I've added it to The List. So expect comments from me about it sometime in 2015.

I don't understand the whole "you can date girls" in a game. One can look forward to quick time events of "didging the contents of a shoe cupboard", "Press A to maintiain a look of real interest whilst anecdotes about people you don't know are being told" and "branching conversations about if you actually want to go to a wedding or not".

Someone should bring a chapter into the game where right at the start, you tell your wife that you are going to a music quiz on a set date. Then two weeks beforehand, you confirm to your friend, whilst in conversation with your wife that you are going to said quiz. Then the week beforehand, you reconfirm this in conversaion with your wife present, and also discuss where you will eat beforehand. Then the day before the quiz you refer to it, and your wife expresses surprise that this is the first time that she has heard of the quiz.

You complete the chapter the day after the quiz if you manage to convince your wife, while wearing a winners medal, holding a mix CD and sporting an astronomical hangover that you actually went to a quiz and didn't spend the evening sat on the sofa with her.

Fuck it, that sounds far too difficult to complete even on Novice.

About it sitting at home alone like an Emo?

Is it cutting itself and dying small portions of its floppy barnet pink?

Does it long for acceptance in a world that doesn't care?

I was going to post some thoughts, but fucked you all off while I smashed people's faces in. The combat really is quite fun, and very Batman-like. The driving is shit, but I'm hoping it'll get better. I like it a lot so far, but have only put an hour or two into it.

That's all you're getting from me.

“Follow the rules of the road to stay unseen.” No stupid proximity-based tailing bullshit.

I’m really enjoying this. It’s so, so much better than GTA for me so far.

GTA IV is one of the greatest games of this generation. Saints Row is a bug-ridden GTA III clone.

SR1 is utter shit. SR2 is brilliant but buggy. SR3 is slicker than 2, but loses some of the fun.

GTAIV is tedium dressed up as a game. Still, we've had this conversation before. You're a twat.
