Hi all

Just got a new pc today, from our very own forum here, and tried to install my legit copy of Office 2010 pro
bear in mind this is the full disc, not a copy, with a proper license key. I have used this on my old pc with no issue.
Now when I try to install it, it says that the license key has been used too many times (I had to reinstall my old PC many times, hence buying a new one)

It cant be fixed by trying the phone method either.
So can anyone help me out, or better, send me a working license key :)
Or if someone knows a help line where I can speak to a real person that would be cool too.

thanks

LS

If you call Microsoft's activation line, there should be an option where you can speak to an operator rather than going through the automated business (try pressing 0 if there isn't one) - they'll be able to sort you out :)

ok ill give it another try tommorow. certainly the system I rang earlier offered no option for that, but google tells me as well as yourself that there must be :S

well that was a waste of time

they basically said the key was dead and they wouldnt refresh it
and she started banging on because I got a cheap copy through work I should just suck it up
I asked her if I had paid £400 would it make the service better and she had no answer.
I then told her I would just pirate the software and Microsoft are a shower of cunts making it impossible to justify legitimately purchasing their software if it ends up unuisable due to having changed PCs or hard drives (which is what happened to me)

If you got it through work I very much expect that it's a non-transferable license, because they usually are very deliberately done that way. It's one of the reasons they're generally quite cheap.
So she was probably entirely correct.

I think my home use has 3 installs. Can you not get the 2013 through work?

I don't believe LS is trying to transfer it from office to domestic, as he works from home(?) and therefore this *is* his office copy. No doubt he can probably just get another copy through work for the same legitimate purpose, but the fact Microsoft refuse to refresh it for hardware changes is completely sketchy.

This is a circumstance where I'd advocate the use of some activation software. You've bought the licence for legitimate purposes, and just because you've had to reinstall it a few times due to hardware issues shouldn't suddenly make the software non-viable. If it came down to a damn court battle over you forcibly activating the software that you'd already bought, I think you'd win on this one every time.

OK I should say we are able to purchase out of our own pocket soem software for installation on our own home hardware for working at home.
Its just subsidised is all, but free from the IT bloke...

she can fuck off. I paid for the software and I think its a farce that you cant activate it on new hard drives. regardless of the cost paid.

You slightly misunderstand what I mean. MS offer two plans for license purchases specifically for employees of companies that have a site license. They are usually quite restrictive licenses beyond what would normally be the case for a consumer license.

They have tightened up I think, I have a TechNet subscription and have found my Office 2013 keys won't rearm

Even the automated line doesn't work

So I just pirate them now:)

It's not a corporate site license, we run office 2007 at work incidentally.
It was bought via a scheme offering subsidised software for employees from a 3rd party. Kinda perk of some sort. So as far as I was concerned it was the same as buying it off ebayer just cheaper. It's a full retail disc... Anyway, pirate bay here we come,

This is why I still use Office 2003 at home. The Volume license was much less restrictive back then :)

If it is a home use one is it £9.95, I get one every release. Surely paying a tenner is easier than pirating?

Microsoft Home Use Program for employees of places with an ELA. Worth noting that you don't buy it, you sort of lease it.

It's a fucking disgrace that a cheap licence is restricted in some kind of way.

My employers get around this by making me take the laptop home every evening. In case the factory burns down, or something untoward. So, I don't think i can get a £10 licence from them.

Well unless LaceSensor confirms this is available to him I don't Kovacs can assume he can get a copy for a tenner. I'm sure he'll now confirm he could just to make my post a waste of time but still.

Anyway, at the risk of also getting piled on here, I agree with him on this. Placing restrictions on stuff is fair enough but the criteria here is irritatingly arbitrary. Hard drives die, and people need/want to reinstall Windows for all sorts of reason, so to tie your software to these things is a real ballache when you just want to get your PC up and running. Even having something like a time limit would be more acceptable to me because at least you can plan for that. If your hard drive fails or your Windows install dies and then Office joins in the fun to tell you it's not playing ball because of something you couldn't control; isn't anger and frustration a reasonable reaction? I'd sure as hell be annoyed to be scrabbling around looking for a replacement for something that has been specifically forced to stop working.

Notes for the inevitable responses:
  • I realise that the software is just working the way it's designed and that the licensing terms are given up front and that it's entirely your choice to buy it or not and blah blah. I'm just saying I think the install restrictions are a bit shit.
  • If LS did insult the phone operator I'm not supporting that action just because I agree with the spirit of his annoyance. I suspect he probably didn't as it goes but I'm sure we'll find out.
  • I realise he didn't have a hard drive fail or whatever and has actually bought a new PC, but the reason he's run out of installs is due to using them up on the old machine so he's still getting hit with a symptom of the, in my opinion, crappy restrictions.

Isn't it free but you pay a tenner for postage? That's the way it's worded when I do it anyway.

Nope it is just £9.95 for 3 installs I think. As long as I work for HP I can get one.

If I leave not so much.

Aye. It's basically a licence extension for a home pc, while you work at the company that has the main licence.
If you leave the company, then your licence expires.

Having remembered I now did this when I first started at my company, the deal is (was?) you pay a fee of £relativelycheap for the license itself and that gets you a download link for the installer; or you can pay an extra amount on top of that to get a physical disc posted out to you as well.

Indeed. I think the supporting evidence shows that Dick Contented-Copse often does argue his own point using his own words (sometimes too many), but if a better quote already exists, why not use it?

No it's not. Mali's quote was from Bill & Ted. My response was also a line from the same film, from a scene which involves the Socrates character. It was supposed to be subtle.

GEEK.

Technically it wasn't, because Socrates never said that. Bill and Ted said it to him.

No it's not. Mali's quote was from Bill & Ted.

Technically it wasn't, because Socrates never said that. Bill and Ted said it to him.

Technically it was - I didn't say it was from Socrates but from Bill & Ted. Bill & Ted themselves actually said it ;)

So rather, it would have been more correct to say that the quote wasn't from Socrates, but saying the quote was from Bill & Ted is not incorrect.

Please tell me you didn't really tell the phone operator, who is doing an unpleasant job for very little money, that she was part of a "shower of cat."

Erm, no I didnt. Sorry for embellishing my story with swear words. "You can get off your high horse now if you like" LS, 2014.

TBF, "shower of cat" is just something fun to write.

I think I said that the process was idiotic and that microsoft are stupid for having such inflexibility to extend me one more activation, almost forcing me to go priate the software, which just seems ridiculous. So, I owned them a bit, but not to make her lose sleep over it. She was a bit of a bitch though in fairness to me (telling me it was ok because I didnt pay full price, making me feel stupid for not realising I couldnt just reinstall legitimate software on a new PC) but in the end could see why it was unfair to inconvenience me when the very reason Ive had to reinstall my PC numerous times is due to Windows issues (!) despite not being able to help in the slightest.

this all of course after about an hour of automated lines, switchboards and holds.

The one thing that cheered me slightly about Origin is the fact that you can eventually get live chat with a guy from India, and assuming you can convey your problem they will actually try to fix it. Sounds obvious but a lot of the big boys don't do anything like that, and it's much preferable to waiting for an email or holding on a phone.

I had to phone Nominet the other month, and expected it to be hateful. On the contrary, they answered the phone fast, they were super-helpful, and they fixed my problem (or explained to me how to fix it, at least) within minutes.
