Man oh man I cannot wait for Godzilla. It's out May the 15th and I am counting the days.
I've never been a big Godzilla fan, though I really enjoyed the 1954 original, and the Pinky & the Brain spoof with Raymond Burr repeatedly saying, "Yes, I see." But after the mild disappointment of Pacific Rim, plus seeing those amazing trailers and hearing the way the director Gareth Edwards is approaching it... well, I'm stoked.
Y'see, when Del Toro started talking about Pacific Rim and its tone he pointed to a paiting by Goya called The Colossus, featuring a giant at night rampaging along a hillside in a storm, the grass beneath his feet on fire. An allegory for war, it was never the less a great inspiration for the sense of dread evoked by a towering giant wreaking havoc. Come the film and I was a bit disappointed that none of that fear and intensity made it into the film. Sure, I enjoyed the cartoony Nintendo feel of the characters (no, really) and the brilliant design work. It was a fun film to watch. But it didn't provide any sort of emotional punch. Still, Robot-Biff and all that.
I'd entirely forgotten about Godzilla after the initial announcement. It was only when I saw a teaser trailer for it in front of some film or other a few months ago that my interest was piqued. It was the one with the skydivers with the red flares, the storm and the operatic glissando and the giant thing moving in the dust storm of debris that was central San Francisco far, far below those plummetting, suicidially brave soldiers. The name came up and I went, "Oooooh."
And there it quietly bubbled happily in the back of my mind. I was quite looking forward to May the 15th.
And now the new trailers with Bryan Cranston bringing the shouting. The collapsing buildings and the roaring and the fear the fear the FEAR. Man, the ideas they may be tossing around in this film are already filling me with 'The Mist' like dread. I genuinely do believe we may be getting a film on parr with that terrifying Stephen King / Frank Darabont creature flick of a few years back.
Half an hour in and it'll be ExplosionsFuckYeahWontSomebodyThinkOfTheChildren because Studios. I'd like to be wrong, but I won't be; not with the SFX budget this requires.
I'm cautiously optimistic about this one having been very impressed with Monsters and the first trailer. I'm now very firmly in no spoilers mode until it's out though - I'm not risking watching anything else until I can get to the cinema, so posting in this thread will no doubt be a huge mistake.
