As the forum's undisputed expert on what podcasts to listen to, I strongly recommend the following:

Shipworm: a three-hour "audio movie" about a doctor who has to do the bidding of a stranger or his family will die. Excellently done.

The Hyacinth Disaster: a single-season sci-fi audio drama that starts out fairly jovial until you remember what the title is. Excellent stuff.

And if you're not listening to Midnight Burger, then lulz wtf n00b

I am listening to Midnight Burger on your recommendation and enjoying it a lot! So much so have introduced it to Fop the youngest. Swears aren't ideal but he hears worse in the car. But the story, characters and ideas outweigh the swears. He loves it.

Stop listening to that amateur shit and listen to the new episode of Top Five Face Off!

Hurst, needs to sort out his breathing on mic. 7.05 mins was particularly annoying on headphones for those people who don’t like that sort of thing.

EDIT: misophonia, that’s the thing.

I am acutely aware of this. And acutely aware that it's not his fault, it's mine.

I do know how to fix it for next time, though.

Great stuff, Grim…! My only (huge) concern is that Mat mentions Tiamat from the D&D cartoon (and indeed D&D in general) as a three headed dragon when it’s five headed. So please rip him to shreds on this next time.

I corrected him at the time, and there was a one-minute discussion that was cut out, which is why he jumps right from "a three headed dragon" to saying "Tiamat was a five headed dragon".

Also not many people have noticed that I got the name of one of the characters I was talking about wrong, over and over again.

Well, that was painful to listen to. Never heard two people be so wrong. Actual answer:

5) Scrooge McDuck
4) The Fairground Master/Boatyard Owner/Lighthouse Keeper/caretaker (etc) in Scooby Doo.
3) Skeletor
2) Baron Greenback
1) Gargamel

I thought of Cardinal Richelieu too. I meant to add him to my list. Yeah, I’d swap him for Scrooge McDuck but also knock him up to 2nd, behind Gargamel.

I’m 46 and definitely remember the TV from Willow The Wisp. I wouldn’t have remembered the name of the character, though.

And if it was opened to kids shows rather than just cartoons, I reckon Grotbags would get a vote from me, too. She was magnificent and scared the heck out of me when I was a kid.

the Page loads, the description appears accurate, but the media player says the clip is 0 seconds long, and looks greyed out (and nothing happens when you hit play)

I started listening to this after this little review of sorts. I listened to the first episode and didn’t like it at all. The delivery was stunted and slow and it just seemed to be very flabby and meandering. I decide to try the second episode the next day, because first day podcast nerves and such, and I’m really glad I did. I’m 11 episodes in now and a big fan. I love the unexpected poking around in the human psyche and philosophy all wrapped in a gently funny and often very touching framework.

Anyway, great recommendation.

Sorry, missed this. So glad you decided to persevere. I agree the first episode is patchy, the interplay between the characters isn't well established and it has a bit of a wacky vibe. The most interesting parts are when it delves into humanity and physics and theory, that's when it gets spicy. And when the bread crumb trail of events starts to coalesce in future episodes is so rewarding.

I hope it's providing some salve to the shingles, sounds horrid.

And hats off to Grim... For the original recco! (Of the podcast, I don't believe he's a proponent of shingles, to my knowledge)

Well obviously you win as you are the only one to include Dogs on your list...

Onto other matters. If you are of a similar vintage to me, you may enjoy the Scarred for Life podcast brought to you by the authors of the splendid Scarred for Life books covering the stuff that was considered children's entertainment in the 70's and 80's...none of this Young Adult nonsense my boy, in my day you went directly from The Wind in the Willows to James Herbert and Sven Hassel books.

https://pod.link/1706291698

Just finished the Joe Cornish episode where his second scarring experience was reading 'The Fog' but not getting passed page 60...and for those that know, it's the school gymnasium scene.

4) Narwhal
3) Giant Siphonophore

I thought of dogs, because I have a dog, which I love. But would I swap it for a manatee? Heck yeah.

Also, humans invented dogs, so are they really animals?
