Its a great divider. My wife thinks it makes me an antisocial cunt as I'll fiddle about with my phone a lot more than she does. Her mum feels the same way. However, I'm pretty sure that if it was a Palm Pre or some other phone, it wouldnt get those comments. This coming from people I cooked dinner for recently who then sat around reading facebook for five minutes before actually going to the table to eat it, the cunts.

Yeah, I fiddle with my phone far too much. If I'm ever bored, or have some free time and am not near my Xbox, chances are I'm on my phone either browsing the internet or firing up some games.

Speaking of which: I have a fair bit of stuff on my current phone. If I were to get a new one, would I have to re-buy all of that stuff, or can I disassociate my current phone with my iTunes account and re-download it all to my new one?

I'm pretty sure it's all linked in with your iTunes account on your computer, so you could just transfer everything you've bought across to the new device.

Apps follow the same DRM rules as the old iTunes Store content. You can have up to five copies of iTunes on the "authorised" list, and any device (iPod or iPhone) synced with an authorised iTunes can run all your paid-for apps. There's no limit on how many devices can sync with a given iTunes. As DRM schemes go, it's very permissive, and you could run the apps on both phones if you wanted (and kept the old one).

If you manage to fill the five authorised computers -- happened to me last week -- you can reset it and turn them all off, but they only let you do that once a year. Or, if you know you're done with a particularly computer, you can deauthorise it.

Moving from my old unlocked iPhone 2G to my 3G earlier this year was a total doddle. iTunes backs everything up, so the worst part of getting a new iPhone to replace an old one is having to wait an age while all your songs, videos and apps get uploaded to it.

The bit that really sold it to me was changing the date of my Sainsbury's groceries while I was in Idaho Falls airport after missing my flight home. I know other phones can do the web but, ooh, it was spiffy.

Hang on, can I get a rewind here? Does this mean that both mine and Ange's iPhones can basically share the same apps from the same iTunes, negating us needing to buy them twice?

They're linked to the iTunes Store account, yes, but that wouldn't stop you doing what you want. To share apps you'd have to share music libraries. Although that might be as simple as setting up "Ange's music" and "Myp's music" playlists and telling each phone to sync against one of those.

Turns out the 6pm BST time that is being bandied around on Twitter came from a few worldwide ISPs that texted customers to tell them when it would be live (citation).

That page also has a very neat use of Unix text tools to check if the new version is live yet.

Most of the Mac news sites seem to be aiming at a 6pm BST release (10am in Cupertino).

I just bought a £15 itunes card from Morrisons to buy the OS update and games.

As the checkout lady validated the card she informed me it could take up to 24 hours.

This is not excellent.

Why wouldn't you just buy direct through iTunes?

Because the account tied to my iTunes has been spended up by me, and I was in Morrisons and it looked trendy.

Those cards are for purchasing for grandchildren as birthday gifts when you don't really know what the internet or an iPod is.

I have an iPhone, my daughter has an iPod Touch and she shares all the apps I have bought through my iTunes store account and can access the App store and download the same apps for free with my password as well.

All iPhone updates are the same size; a 256Mb ROM image of the entire internal flash chip (compressed down a little bit).

Bigger than you thought, or smaller than you thought? I think 256Mb is pretty compact for iPhone OS. There's a lot in there.
