Yes, that's in OS3.

You're not wrong there! I'm fairly sure you could do it in a really early firmware but the function vanished without explanation. Either than or I dreamt it.

Yeah, I remember you saying. I don't think you were dreaming it.

I've got the 3GS Tour video on my desktop. I'm hesitant to watch it in case it makes me buy one, like the original iPhone Tour did.

The headline differences are: speed, memory, video support, 3MP camera, camera autofocus, voice commands for almost everything in the OS, compass.

I'd be lying if I said I didn't want it.

I know, I'm the same. And I'm more than likely going to plump for your plan of 'buy a PAYG phone then sell my 3G with PAYG SIM on ebay.'

Stop it. If you do that it means it's a good plan and I should do it too.

In other news, I went so far as to bring my Macbook to work today so I could upgrade the phone when the update goes live. Rather than, y'know, wait a few hours until I go home.

I'm going to do it. You can't stop me. And I'm going to have my hand in the fire the whole time, even while I'm jumping off that cliff.

In my defence, it's really important I send Grim... an MMS as soon as possible to stop him going on about it.

That's a pretty strong defence, in fairness.

Is it wrong that I really want the 3GS's compass? The time I got lost on a mountain brings back memories; it's all very good knowing roughly where I am in relation to towns and roads, but fuck me was it difficult to figure out which direction I was facing, given all I could see was trees and a horrendously overcast sky. And yes, I'm talking about a compass in a phone instead of bothering to take the cheap compass keyring with me. This is the 21st century, damnit!

No. The iPhone would be fantastic for walking directions with a compass; without it, it's far more fiddly to work out which direction is which. Google Maps's satellite view isn't all that useful for picking out landmarks to get your bearing by.

I think the iPhone battery has more capacity but obviously it's doing a bunch more than the Touch is. Overally I wouldn't be surprised if the battery life is less.

Yeah, the 2nd Gen iPod Touch has a bit more oomph in the graphics chip. It seems the 3G S is faster again. This will present interesting problems/opportunities for software devs.

I've no idea, to any of that. The iPhone battery isn't very good, but I absolutely hammer it with games and wi-fi. It charges obscenely quickly, though.

So I'm better than you all now until you get the new iPhone.

Buzz on Twitter is all sorts of times -- 1pm, 3pm, 6pm. I don't think anyone knows. I brought the Macbook anyway because I wanted to show someone some stuff on it.

I don't think it matters whether he's at work or not, he'll still be 'pulling a late one' when 3.0 is released.

I have both Bootcamp and Parallels on mine, pointing at the same partition. Parallels doesn't like Windows 7 though, not even a little bit. I might end up ditching BootCamp (I am getting a new PC soon) and building a small WinXP image for Parallels.

Hah. People online are claiming that they have a direct download for it from apple's site, but look at the URL:

http://appldnld.apple.com.edgesuite.net/content.info.apple.com/iPhone/061-6582.20090617.LlI87/iPhone2,1_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw

I wonder what nasties are in there. 7A341 is the build distributed by Apple at WWDC last week, the so-called "Gold Master"[1] version. Apart from that telltale domain name, this is the same sort of format Apple uses for their content servers -- these are the URLs that iTunes downloads firmware from.

[1] I don't see how any digitally distributed software can really be said to "go gold".

Because 'gold' is another term for production or live release. It doesn't have to be pressed onto a disc and stuck in a box to use this term.

Citation.

Seems I'm wrong about that URL being dodgy, and edgesuite.net is part of the Akamai content caching network.

Zardoz, I hope you're kidding, that's an iPhone firmware file, not an iPod Touch one.

If genuine, that's firmware for the iPhone 3GS, not the iPhone 3G. If it was for the 3G, the URL would say iPhone1,2_3.0_7A341_Restore.ipsw instead of iPhone2,1_3.0...

I've got a first gen 8gb iphone, unlocked to allow an o2 PAYG sim.

Will the new software allow an o2 PAYG sim, without the need to unlock?

I'm 99% sure this works. As sure as I can be without having done it myself. The locked 3G phones (which is what andyb would have after flashing) will take any O2 SIM card.

The prices are on O2's site, have been for a week now. Contract and PAYG.
