I don't know his name, or anything about him really. I like the weird food.

They made a series of this? I saw the one-off Edwardian special they made years ago and enjoyed it muchly.

Also, Giles Coren once snubbed RemovedByRequest, so he can't be all bad.

Yes, er... a Tudor one, French revolution one (last night) and next week it's the roaring 20's.

What happened to last weeks. The Foxsat box reported an error with the recording and it isn't on Iplayer. It was due to be the 1950's.

Yeah I was shocked by how watchable it was as I had low hopes fo it based on that publicity clip of gappy tooth woman leaping out of a van John Woo style.

The whole midwich cuckoos thing was actually quite sinister.

That's only stuff from all the trailers. I don't think it's revealing anything of the plot.

There is two bloke's kissing in it though so look out for that near the end if you need to look away uncomfortably.

I saw the first one and recorded the second one last night. The elephant one was absolutely fascinating.

A guy I know watched this by mistake, and realised that it was the elephant he adopted for his daughter some years ago. He's checking whether it came with a warranty.

Who looks after food hygiene in the hivemind? I cooked a chilli con carne on Friday night; it has been in the fridge since. If I eat it tonight (thoroughly warmed) will I die?

5 days is on the edge of dubious, but I'd eat it. You want it well heated though. At least 20 minutes on the hob - add some water as it'll have thickened up too much to heat through easily. If there's rice with it, chuck the rice and make new.

Just had a spectacularly arsey email from an actor demanding to know the outcome of his audition at the end of June.

Thing is I haven't held any auditions, and don't have a bloody clue what he is talking about.

Aye, all this is a given. I very rarely keep rice, because I know it's difficult to refrigerate, and I've never bothered to memorise how you go about not poisoning yourself with it.

Unless you've got a completely girly-man stomach, you should be able to happily eat any cooked refrigerated food that doesn't actually smell bad or have mould on it.

Email him back and tell him he's made the second audition but the part has changed a bit and he's required to turn up wearing a Scooby Doo fancy dress outfit.

That is usually my rule, actually. But for once I thought I'd check. One day I'm going to read a book on food hygiene so I can use FACTS AND SCIENCE.

:this:

I have an incredibly lax approach to food hygiene, mind. I don't so much have a '15 second rule' as a 'hasn't gone cold yet' rule. I credit this with building up my immunities and never getting ill.

FACTS and SCIENCE have no place in the ART OF COOKING AND FACE-STUFFING, man. SCIENCE kills ART. Food made with SCIENCE ends up tasting like snail porridge.

Well played. But I'd wager Blumenthal has made more money from food than you ever will, hmmm?

Same here. I'm pretty tolerant of stomach bugs, by and large (hell, I eat a lot of spicy food with after affects that aren't really distinguishable from minor food poisoning anyway). It's rare food hangs around in my fridge this long; the last pot of chilli was behind some bottles of cider and I forgot about it.

Totally disagree. The only thing that better blends science and art than cooking does is that experiment where they see what kind of webs spiders make when they're ripped off their tits.

How much of that is down to being a canny publicist, and how much due to how good the food tastes? People are notoriously easy to sway with fashion and hype and marketing.

I haven't seen that one. Note they are user-contributed, so I suppose typos are inevitable.

Also, I'm with Craster on cooking being a perfect art/science blend. I am totally going to copy how Blumenthal keeps cooking oils in his kitchen: a row of proper chemistry bottles with ground glass stoppers.

That's not a typo, that's "using the wrong word".

They got "don't" and "you" the wrong way round. That's a typo.

EDIT - it would have been funnier if I'd said something like "they mean X/Y, not Y/X! Oh, the sillies". but I've missed my chance now.

Disagree. Typo's are typing mistakes, like hitting g instead of h. Anyway, they should have had "what part of" at the top.

Technically, yes, vernacularly, no.

I have been building up my kitchen science collection. The wife bought me a massive tome all about they way they do loads of the stuff at El Bulli - after about 50 attempts I have successfully managed to produce shots of melon soup with bubbles of bacon juice floating in them, which is ultra-awesome.

HOLY SHIT. WANT. HOW DO YOU DO THIS.

I've had this on my To-Buy list for ages. It's supposed to be a very good book.

It's worth noting for people who don't realise that Blumenthal, whilst the most famous of these kitchen scientists, is far from the first, or the most prominent, to play in these waters. He often collaborates with various physicists and chemists from academia to come up with new techniques (and, to be fair, he does cite them correctly).
