Mrs T has been offered a job. It's what she wants to do, it'll give her a good stepping stone to a great career, its working with her best friend, she is working in a completely different industry at the moment and applying for these types of jobs is getting her nowhere, so this is a major break if she can get it.

Yay right?

It's in York :(

It'll mean a long distance relationship for a year or so while she gets the experience she needs, we've done long distance before and have no worries that we can't make it work again, but it just sucks. She has to do it, I've told her she has to do it, she knows she has to do it, but she is still not sure about taking it.

Heh. Moving to York isn't an option for me, London is where 90% of my work is. Last time we lived apart, I moved to Newcastle and tried to do the weekly London commute, but it really didn't work well on any front.

Don't worry, I didn't take it as a serious suggestion, but it is an obvious solution! :) I would certainly move if it was an option, but even if I did there is no chance of my line of work being prevalent in York, so I would have to work away during the week anyway, which kinda misses the point! :D

re:york

The transport situation has greatly improved so it's really not going to be a nightmare to get to each other. (from london) There is a 2 hour fast train to chesterfield/sheffield (I know I live here but it's a genuine non-stopping train hub) and then it's 45 mins to york. They are regular and not hideously expensive if you advance book and both trains have wifi. Certain towns in the north, York included, are awesome when it comes to trains (not manchester, avoid manchester), and it's a bit boggling to us oop north when you see all the trouble people commuting from the home counties to London have.

Another plus - you get to hang out in York. Seriously, York is frigging awesome.

Thanks for the info. :)

Unfortunately I live outside london on a different line to the direct York route. Kate went to uni in Sheffield, so I know the area pretty well and the logistics won't be too bad, it's only 2-3 hours up the M1 from me, and Kate will most likely get herself a car once she is there.

Plus it's closer to her family for her etc... so in all respects it's perfect. Apart from living apart!

The fact you're accepting it as something of an inevitability will make a massive difference to how you can make it work for you. You said you've done it before so you have that experience on your side and for some people, it's a way of life.

Working in construction, a lot of the guys I work with have worked away most of their married lives. Some have been married for 25+ years and only see their families for 3 days every 2 weeks, plus annual holidays.

It's not for everyone, I hate it when Ramsea is away. Partly because some aspects of life are easier when he's not here, I know that doesn't sound like it makes sense but it makes me realise that I could live without him without much problem. That should be a good thing, however, I don't like that thought at all. Add to that the fact I don't have the reassurance of a physical relationship when he's not around, it just make it harder when he's away.

Went to get some cash out and the machine swallowed my card up.
'No problem,' I thought, 'I'll just call into the branch and request a new one.'
They cancel the card, and order a new one.
I get back to work, and realise that I'd tried to use an expired card, and had therefore just cancelled its replacement, which was hiding behind my library ticket.

Kalmar you always have mega hugs coming your way whenever you need them. *MEGA HUGS*

Zio - to be fair, us ladies do have to be a tad cautious when getting too close to you... *tentative hugs*

Trooper - I totally see where you are coming from, it looks like to move on in my career I might have to move away from here, it totally sucks when you can't just up and move everyone you want around you with you too.

Sorry to hear of the long distance woe, Trooper. :(

On the plus side it does mean you'll be visiting York lots. York is ace. In fact, I think it's my fave city. Check out Alleycats, a fine cafe-bar there. Their deep-fried brie with cranberry is to die for. And the wine's good too.

Hmm. Itching to read Susanna Clarke's Jonathan Strange again now. That's set in York.

Minor nay for me. Am dogsitting for L. Rixondale. This morning the dog thought it'd be great to roll around in poo instead of chasing the ball, meaning muggins here had to shower her. :spew: Dog did not like this. Resulted in change of shirt and me running to get to work on time. Bad dog.

Opposite the Mcdonalds there is the sweetest little teapot shop/cafe. They have this wonderful little back room and the waitresses who work there genuinely take pride in what they do in a "waitressing is not my job, it's who I am" kind of a way . They also still use doilies, I like doilies.

Terminal 5 is pretty good actually. Certainly in comparison to the majority of airports i've flown through.
The other 4 terminals are awful however, both in terms of ambience and service.
