Whilst I find Spiked-Online's brand of hardcore ex-Marxist libertarianism annoying at times, there is something pleasing in their article comparing the reaction to the Paris shooting with the response to the temporary basis ending of Page 3: http://www.spiked-online.com/freespeech ... 3-movement

One of the problems of being an almost-absolutist believer in free speech is that one ends up having to defend an awful lot of shit.

Yes, but that particular combination is unlikely. I was taking the piss somewhat.

To seriously answer Mimi's question: it's ok to like things but find certain aspects troublesome. Porn, violent games/films, etc.

Didn't know you knew the place. So it was the Official BeeX Pub of the Dreaming Spires after all.

Of course, since the White Rabbit opened in 2012 or thereabouts it did start facing a lot more competition, especially as the Rabbit's pizzas are superb and its wi-fi more reliable.

There are quite a lot of female feminists that watch porn, I'd be surprised if there were no male feminists doing the same...

Although it's more difficult to justify it's a sex-positive feminist stance, considering most men watch porn anyway.

I personally don't really enjoy it much.

"Most men" do lots of things, I'm not sure avoiding these things because of that reasoning is at all logical.

(Yes, I may be deliberately missing your point :p )

There is something reassuring when you walk into your local pub, the owner sees you, and, with a mad glint in his eye, begins to tap a pump handle. "Do you like chilli?" He asks. "Obv" your hero replies. So I now have a chocolate and chilli porter with an amazing aftertaste. Superb.

The electoral role in Bradford has been reduced by 5% as a result of the new system* to stop electoral fraud. That's 20,000 people. In the City Ward, it's dropped by 14%. That's quite alarming.

Electoral rolls in Oxford have been heavily hit because colleges and halls are no longer able to register students en-masse.
I'm torn on this one.

Access to the ballot is extremely important and we should put nothing in the way to prevent those eligible from registering. On the other hand, we need to feel that the register is accurate and contains only eligible voters, and if people are unwilling to register they should not be surprised if they don't get a vote or find it hard to get insurance. Certainly, more publicity is needed, but it's depressing that people don't think it's important.

One step to combating fraud would be to curb the use of postal and proxy voting and restrict it to the severely ill, the disabled, or those with long-standing arrangmenets to be elsewhere. I've always felt uncomfortable with the ease postal or proxy votes can be obtained as they carry the risk that the voter's choice will not be secret or not be their own decision.

I don't agree. We need to make it easier for people to vote, not harder. The current system is archaic, if I couldn't postal vote then there is a reasonable chance I couldn't get to my local polling station, due to work commitments. (I work a long way from my house on a daily basis, and regularly work away from home on short notice.)

Surely it wouldn't be beyond the wit of man to devise a system whereby you could go to any polling station.

I wonder whether the negative name calling only served to harden his views where his views should have been challenged in a constructive forum. College, aye?

Just a thought. I'm not saying that you didn't challenge his views but surely the moniker "Matt The Bigot" couldn't have helped. And I'm not saying that's anyone's fault either. It's just a thought. I'm not picking a fight or nothing I'm just saying I don't like name calling and name calling can actually be incredibly hurtful. Unless your nick name is Rad Johnny Johnson Jnr of Funkytown.

The whole system underneath is archaic, there isn't any join up of data between parishes. It possible, but not easy.
