A Corvette ZR-1. But only after I'd had the 911 Turbo, the M5, the R32, the Monaro and that new Lotus.

The Ford Explorer I drove around Hawaii was nice and ate up the miles but far too big for UK roads. The Mustang convertible was all style and no substance. An auto box more indecisive than Gordon Brown, allied to an accelerator pedal that was connected to the throttle by jelly.

Yeah, the 'Vette was the only thing I could think of. I suppose a 300C ain't that bad, if you don't mind looking like Sir Alan Sugar on a budget. With no taste.

I just watched an incredibly chilling Star Trek:TNG on Virgin One that I hadn't seen before, "Parallels".

It starts as the usual 'temporal rift causes everything to go funny and only one character realizes it', in this case, Worf. Things got more interesting when things go funny yet again and now Worf is MARRIED to Troi. And Riker is captain, as Picard hadn't survived the Locutus treatment.

"But you said chilling!"

I did. And one bit was.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
Eventually they work out that Worf's shuttle passed through some kind of quantum singularity thing and now the old theory that every decision we make, a version of it is played out in another dimension, comes into play. The rift thing is causing hundreds of other Enterprises from these other dimensions to appear, and they need to send Worf back to the one he's originally from. So off he goes, on a shuttlecraft, to the 'correct' Enterprise.

And then. I'd better let Memory Alpha tell you.

Quote:
Worf sets away, but the shuttle is attacked by one of the Enterprises. Captain Riker hails it and he comes face to face with an alternate version of himself.

This counterpart Riker has a long beard, is disheveled and tired, panicking on the totaled bridge of his Enterprise. The transmission is filled with static. He begs not to be sent back to his own universe, where the Federation is gone, the Borg are everywhere and the Enterprise is one of the only remaining ships. However Captain Riker says that there is no option and if the plan works, all ships will automatically return. Desperate, the counterpart Riker declares they won't go back. He cuts the channel, then he fires on the shuttle. Captain Riker grimly orders Wesley to disable the Enterprise. Wesley fires a single photon torpedo, collapsing the ship's weakened shields and engine core, which destroys it completely.

Image
(A desperate Captain Riker doesn't want to go back to his Borg-ravaged universe)

And here's the script:

Code:
57   INT. BRIDGE (OPTICAL)

Riker, Data, Wesley, Troi at positions. Red Alert.

               WESLEY
Captain -- the shuttle is under
         attack!

               RIKER
         The Bajorans again?

               WESLEY
No sir -- it's one of the
         Enterprises.
            (beat)
         They're hailing us.

               RIKER
         On screen.

On the Viewscreen, we see another CAPTAIN RIKER
standing on the Bridge of another Enterprise. He looks
haggard, terrified about something. Worf can be seen
behind him -- he also looks urgent. The ship is DARK,
smokey, lit only by emergency lighting. A panel
   explodes in the b.g.

STAR TREK: "Parallels" - REV. 10/08/93 - ACT FIVE         61.

57   CONTINUED:

               RIKER ON VIEWSCREEN
            (urgent)
We won't go back! You don't know
what it's like in our universe.
The Federation is gone -- the Borg
are everywhere! We're one of the
         last ships left! Please, you've
         got to help us!

   A difficult moment.

               RIKER
I'm sorry. There's no choice. If
         this works, everything will return
         to --

               RIKER ON VIEWSCREEN
         No! We won't go!

   The transmission ENDS.

               WESLEY
         They're firing on the shuttle!

               RIKER
Open fire! Try to disable them!

   Wesley works...

58   EXT. SPACE - THE TWO ENTERPRISES (OPTICAL)

One of the ships FIRES TORPEDOES on the other.

59   INT. BRIDGE (OPTICAL)

   As before.

               WESLEY
            (off console)
         Direct hit... their shields have
         collapsed... their engine core's
         overloading --

On the Viewscreen, the other Enterprise EXPLODES in a
blast of fiery debris -- completely destroyed.

               RIKER
         What happened?

               WESLEY
            (off console)
It looks like their ship had
         already taken heavy damage --
         their warp containment field must
         have been weak.

               RIKER
         Probably from fighting the Borg...

Fucking. Hell. Both our minds were set to racing by this little 30 second sequence, and the ending of the episode was almost ignored - we were both babbling about the poor bastards from the universe where the Borg had won, how they'd had to hide in their tatty ship knowing that all hope was lost, and now their once chance at rescue had just blow them to bits.

The more I think about it, a ragged Enterprise and desperate crew fleeing across the Galaxy just prolonging the inevitable. Crumbs.

Yes.

Good news Owen! Two Worlds 2

TopWare (now owned by Zuxxez) has announced a sequel to Oblivion-alike RPG Two Worlds.

Memorably dubbed Two Worlds II, the game will appear on Mac, "next-gen consoles" and PC this winter.

The sequel has been in development for two years and makes "quantum leaps" in all areas, boasts the press release. AI has been overhauled, authors ditched and a brand-new combat engine employed. Not in place of the authors, obviously.

It will be an "unforgettable experience where excitement, sheer enjoyment and graphics rule"

Korean internets. 1000kbs downloading stuff using Vuze (wasn't games or music if any of you people are thinking I am a terrible, terrible pirate - it was TV stuff and that is justifiable seeing as I have already paid my TV license but iPlayer is not available in Korea. OK? Good.).

Can you get downloads that fast in the UK? I have never seen it, but then I have only got a 2mb line...

This weekend was the first time in almost a year that I'd been on a bike. We went for a ride around Howden Reservoir in Derwent Valley. It's a 20km course, my saddle was set too low, I didn't bring an Allen key to fix it and it was fucking hard work. Great fun though. Would do again.

I can get about 1500KB/s if the servers I'm downloading from are ace, or I have a lot of good connections on torrents. I think I'm on a 20Mb line, though, and 1500KB/s is exactly 12Mb.

Following on from last weeks discussion about my new solid state camera:

Official Sony SxS memory card (8 gb) - £295
Bespoke express card adaptor + 16 gb super fast SDHC card - £87

Now granted the adaptor solution still isn't as fast as the official Sony card (and therefore can't do some of the high framerate stuff) but even so, methinks Mr Sony is sticking on some substantial markup on there.

How many rewrites are a SDHC good for? Keeping in mind the card will be totally reformatted after each use?

The vending machine in the tea area has alternating packs of cheese & onion and ready salted hula hoops. That means there's a 50/50 chance of having to buy two packs to get the flavour you want. Why would they do that?!

Varies from card to card, but it'll be broadly similar to the official Sony card. Formats won't matter, all flash cards have wear-levelling chips that mean that you write data all over the card even when your device or OS thinks it's writing to the same few sectors all the time.

Just heard that in our 'shiny new office' the only fire exit is the main staircase. If that's blocked, we're supposed to stay up on the second floor: the doors will hold for thirty minutes. I think I'll take a rope in tomorrow and store it under my desk, else become a participant in a dire rescue movie.

Come do the Steelman triathlon relay, said three blokes at my running club. Be a right laugh - we're going to see if we can beat Dominic, who's doing the whole thing. Yeah, alright, and three of us threw together a team. Only went and came second overall, didn't we - beating the other team from the club into third?! I am a little bit chuffed with myself and my teammates.

Well, the government DO want to cut down on public sector spending....

Excellent work, sir!

Why didn't you come first?

Do you notice your HR people ever referring to 'expendable overheads' in a sinister fashion?

And is the smoking area beneath the heating tanks?

MaliA's top tip:

If you have a BBQ, and forget to put the grease catching cup underneath and fat ends up on the patio, hosing it down after it has melted due to the sun does not remove it. instead, it leaves a fine film over the slab, so, after a bit of rain, it's slippery as fuck.

This post brought to you with a bruised head. Off to get some biological washing powder now.

How many rewrites are a SDHC good for? Keeping in mind the card will be totally reformatted after each use?
Varies from card to card, but it'll be broadly similar to the official Sony card. Formats won't matter, all flash cards have wear-levelling chips that mean that you write data all over the card even when your device or OS thinks it's writing to the same few sectors all the time.

Hopefully I'll get on OK with the card readers and high quality SDHC cards. Lots of other EX1 users have been using them including my mate even though Sony don't support the combo (well they wouldn't would they?).

Some people have had trouble with cheaper cards though so the advice is to use Transcend or Sandisk top end cards only. They've basically got to be capable of sustaining 35 meg with no dropping below. The special shooting modes (for slow mo) can go as high as 70 meg so obviously nobody has yet found a card that can sustain that other than the official Sony.

You also have to use the right sort of card reader. I've got one of the bespoke Aussie ones, and there is a Kingston one coming with the camera.

That'll give me 2x16 gig and 1x8 gig (that's the official Sony one). I'll need more but I want to play first. 16 gig is good for 50 minutes at full HD.

So, I add the biological washing liquid to the offending slab and step indoors, jsut as the heavens open, and it all gets washed away.

God really, really does hate me.

I don't mind. I've just realised that I've worked out the volume of my bathroom as I know the throughput of the new extractor fan, so I can set the timer to the minimum needed to change the air twice, and I'm considering getting a distress flare to test this. I really, really need to get out more.
