No better after a reboot.

Not too far in, factory reset time I guess, not much use without the fucking APNs defined.

Have you installed anything from the market that it might not like?
When do you get a factory reset, when viewing the APN list?
Are you signed into a google account, did you sign in again after doing the factory reset?

Bear in mind I have no idea what might be causing this, but I thought I'd at least try to take it more seriously :hat:

I haven't installed anything yet, I was just trying to get internet on 3G working and get the MMS settings entered.

I'm just trying to do this as per the MT website:

4. Press the "Menu" button and select "New APN".
5. Select "Name" and enter MT 3G.
6. Press "OK".
7. Scroll to and select "APN" and enter 3gpronto.
8. Press "OK".
9. Scroll to and select "Port" and enter 9201.
10. Press "OK".

15. Press the "Menu" button and press "Save".
16. Make sure the new profile is selected.
17. Press the "Home" button to return to the main screen.

from the home screen:
menu button/settings/security/change screen lock.

Then you can pick from None/pattern lock/PIN/Password.

Not in V2.1 you can't, it was added in V2.2

That said, I am feeling less angry now that 3G and MMS are working OK. (Well, I assume MMS is, I haven't tested it yet.)

And I've been able to put my favourite ringtone (The Thrillseekers - Synaesthesia) on there by connecting it as a disc drive and copying the mp3 straight over, unlike the fucking around iPhones and iTunes put you through.

They're so criminally underpowered it's not even funny. I don't like Miss Malabar's G1 in the slightest; it makes Android look like an appalling OS, which from what I tell is undeserved somewhat.

I'm failing to understand in any way how this is the case.

HOWEVER - I am overall getting to like the phone a lot more now, got it paired with the head unit in the car fine for Bluetoothy call goodness, and despite the head unit, wiring and mic being the same, call sound quality is much improved.

Still tweaking the various settings to get it how I want it to be, and can only hope that Angry Birds does indeed appear for its 'summer release'.

The higher screen res, Flash support, and faster CPU + far more RAM does make using it as a web browser a much more pleasant experience than on the 3G.

Oh yes, and a decent camera with video support too, which I have kind of missed during my 3G tenure.

I've stuck a 16GB Micro SD card in it, I bought this at the same time as the phone, MANY THANKS TO THE GUY WHO SOLD IT TO ME FOR NEGLECTING TO MENTION IT COMES WITH A 4GB CARD PRE-INSTALLED.

The 4GB one would have done me fine if I'd have known it was in there.

I only got the 16GB card because it wasn't that much more than the 8GB one, which wasn't that much more than the 4GB one, and so on......

Really? The Nokia N95 can deal with up to two terrabytes (they faked up a card and tested it).

£60 isn't bad for a new toy, they're going for about £80-85 on ebay unrooted. I've just stuck mine one, but Joans added lovely rooty goodness first.

SDHC tops out at 32Gb, beyond that is SDXC. You have both filesystem limits and hardware controller limits to deal with. The N95 wouldn't support beyond a 32Gb card because the card reader firmware would freak out. SDXC was only standardised in 2009 so I'd be impressed if the N95 would work with it!

Nuh-uh. It wasn't a real card, remember, it was an adaptor pretending to be one, or something.

There's a photo of one reporting 2048GB free. Enragingly, I can't find it.

You have mad citation skills.

Again, distinguish between the card controller and the N95's software. If you fake up a card like you are describing, you're testing the software (which works) not the controller (which I'm willing to bet doesn't).

True, but the card was plugged into the phone.

This perhaps isn't worth the amount of attention it's getting ;)

Are you buying my G1?

First video clip off the Desire, seems to cope with low light conditions pretty well.

In other news, a free night out with plenty of room to spare, only put a tenner in :nerd:

Unfortunately I did then use my good fortune to buy a couple too many double JDs and Coke for me and my chum :spew:

Is there a way to have the SIM card in, switch the phone call/data roaming capability off but leave Wi-Fi on?

Basically, I want to hook my Magic up to a Wi-fi hotspot and be certain I'm not incurring roaming charges when it syncs email and calendar.

Yeah, go into Airplane mode, then go to 'Settings' | 'Wireless and networks' and switch your wireless on as normal. Can use GPS too.

Not on this Magic you can't. (v1.6).

Settings - Wireless + Networks - Mobile networks - deselect Data roaming.

Now it won't allow a data connection when roaming, but you can still use Wi-Fi.

Lady T now has a Xperia X10 Mini Pro (and an active SIM after a lot of fucking about with the cunts at Telstra >:( )

Is it worth rooting a phone like this? I'm not sure if Lady T will be all that bothered by much over and above the basic phone/SMS/email/browsy activities, so I'm not that inclined to rush and fiddle with the thing too much, other than maybe a few choice apps and rearranging the screens.

Are there any 'must-have' android apps, things that improve the phone dramatically?

Things like better email handling (esp hotmail if possible) would be nice. Simple is good here, too. This is the first Android phone I've ever messed about with.

You won't find a phone with better mail integration out of the box, but only if you use Gmail. I really would recommend that she gets a Gmail account and forwards all her Hotmail stuff to it.

App-wise, I like Hullomail (which takes over from the default answerphone and has visual voicemail like the iPhone, but it forwards messages to your Gmail account too), Handcent SMS, Goggles, Record It (if you have Sky+), Swype (for groovy typing) and Locale.

HulloMail certainly seems to have some mixed reviews, I'll give it a go though.
Grim..., have you tried Tasker? It looks like Locale, but you can do even more, but I never really used Locale that much, so it might not be as good.

I don't seem to use much that hasn't already been mentioned, Android Agenda Widget is quite a nice free calendar widget, but that's about it.
