you would be surprised how many of my work colleagues on the university had hard drive "failures". Really, people think they can write a big "S" on my forehead. I think i made quite some enemies there

40GB for the PS2 in 2001 and still my PS3 only has a pissy little 40GB drive. Bah!

It was horridly expensive tho man. IIRC I paid about $90 for it with FF. And I didn't even want it for that.. I used a program called Hdloader which basically booted the PS2 and allowed it to read ISOS off the hard drive. Great when I didn't know anyone who chipped them and didn't want to run the risk of voiding warranty. Best of all it ran snes9x for the PS2 and the megadrive emu

I would imagine that the ps3 uses a laptop like drive (2.5") which are more money than their 3.5" counter parts. Also with similar spec (7200 RPM let's say instead of a laptops normally pitiful 5200) they are far more expensive.

PS3 uses nano arrays of carbon crystals activating in a solid state matrix to store data. So, technically, it isn't an HDD in the true sense, more of a data storage solutinon.

Yes, PS3s use standard 9.5mm height 2.5" disks. They're pretty cheap these days though -- £53 inc VAT for 320Gb. Time was laptop disks cost five times as much as a desktop of equivalent spec; these days, it's more like twice as much, if not a little less.

Careful. 2.5" disks have smaller platters, so a 5200rpm spindle speed gives higher mean transfer rates than the same spindle speed on a 3.5" disk. In addition, slower spindle speeds in laptop drives lead to less power consumption, and hence less heat and more battery life; there are delicate balancing acts in the engineering.

Luckily I got the internal forcefield working before the nano Skywalker appeared and ensured the blueprints were shredded then burned.

First up Far Cry 2 with no AA. I'm having a bitch of a time getting it working properly in Vista.

Start game.
Game demands the CD which you then have to find.
20 minutes later you find the CD.
Game loads.
Game crashes.
Get bored, play X-Boxstation instead.

PC gaming is about as much fun as self-harm.

No offence John, but I compared that FO3 screenshot to my 360 version (as I happened to be playing it at the time). To my eyes, it just didn't seem very different at all.

Install game, install no dvd crack. Enjoy ten times faster loading than any console can manage.

You're doing it wrong. Even the games I paid for don't run from the cd/dvd.

A still image won't. It's not about the images in truth. It's more about view distances, particle effects and so on. None can be seen from a screen shot.

I also had the AA on low there, whereas most of the time I have it set to high. I just can't get my head around Vista so it's going. Appears m$ have disabled opengl in favor of direct3d. My nvidia control panel does not appear in Vista, and, looking at the drivers they are a third of the size. So there is no Nvidia control panel in Vista which means you have to rely on bloody Vista.

Fuck that. I'm putting XP back on thisarvo. Can't stand this playschool shit anymore.

So even for the games you've legitimately bought, you still have to install a potentially harmful, illegal crack in order to get them to run properly? I'm not meaning to sound off, but it just doesn't seem worth it.

With regards to Fallout 3, I think it looks absolutely stunning on my console. Do I think that the experience would be better if I had slightly better particle effects and anti-aliasing? I severely doubt it.

So what you are saying is that the games require a crack that could contain viruses and malware in order to run without a CD or DVD?

I crack games to avoid installing DRMs and Securom. If they treat me like a criminal I will act like one.

Crysis wouldnt even run without being cracked because I have Daemon tools.

I've always done it any way, for the loading times. And yes, it is worth it, much so.
