Cheers, matey.

How can I find out what it is? Is there a stats page I've missed?

No idea. I became an werewolf quite quickly, which means I'm immune to all diseases. There are certain daedric artefacts you can acquire to do the same job.

I dunno, given the hardware issues with the earlier 360s I'm not sure I'll want to be an early adopter of the next console. And God knows I've got enough of a backlog of games to get through from the current generation. I'll probably spend the first six months of the life of the Xbox 3 cheerfully working through the last this generation has to offer and then upgrade to the new one once any hardware issues have come to light and hopefully been sorted.

There's absolutely no chance in hell the next Xbox would have hardware issues on a par with the 360. It'd be the end of Xbox if it did, regardless of its subsequent success. No way can you come back from that twice. It'll be checked and quadruply checked before release.

As for me personally, I'll be getting it day one this time. I'm just completely impressed with the 360 and what it does. I can't wait for new hardware. As for the last this generation has to offer, it's mainly sequels any way! New hardware, new IPs, proper 1080p, 60 frames per second, 64 player Battlefield multiplayer (I bloody hope). So long as it's 100% backwards compatible with the 360 - both retail games and XBLA - I'll be queuing up at midnight.

Also, extremely tempted by the cheapy cheap Gamestation offer, but that would mean "cancelling" my order with the Mrs to get this for Christmas. Plus I still have other stuff to do. Must resist.

Oh I'm sure they'll try their best, and certainly harder than they did last time, but I'm just not that convinced that any amount of testing they can do between the time the hardware is completely finalised and the time they need to start selling it will be as strenuous as the real world useage of millions of actual people all over the world. Maybe I'm over-egging the pudding a tad here but it's still a very real risk with new hardware that will (hopefully) be as cutting edge as a new Xbox will be. I also suspect people have become inured to a certain extent to hardware failures and although it's not a good precedent to set by any means the ups and downs of both the Xbox 360 and PS3's hardware lifecycle have taught it as a fact of life so I don't think it would be the death knell you're predicting.

Even if the last games of this generation were mainly sequels, and I'm not convinced of that, does that mean they won't be worth playing? You yourself seem happy at the prospect of Skyrim currently and have bummed Gears of War sequels, CoD games in general and Forza 4 to name just a recent few. I dunno, you just seem bizarrely eager to write off the sort of games you're actually enjoying right now while leaping to the conclusion that new hardware will somehow magically bring new IP (why neccesarily should it?) which is an odd position to hold I think. It's also worth noting that the 360 has always had very limited backwards compatibility and the PS3 quickly moved to none at all so if, as you say, that's a requirement for you then you could already be heading for disappointment there.

Don't get me wrong, I'm thoroughly looking forward to the next gen stuff and I'm becoming more and more aware of the hardware limitations of the stuff we're seeing now, but writing off current games as crap sequels and mythologising the amazing new games that will appear as soon as consoles become more powerful seems a bit of an unbalanced view.

Um, I'm increasingly aware that every time I post in this thread it's to talk about stuff not directly related to Skyrim. Apologies folks, just tell me to shut up if that's the consenscus as I really am not intentionally trying to derail this thread.

I'm not saying that the sequels are bad, am I? What I am saying is that I'm not going to get hung up on prioritising them over any potentially good next-gen launch titles. I'm enjoying them now, but I'm ready for the next step and would drop the likes of Gears 3, MW3, Ass Creed 27, etc, for that tomorrow. As for Skyrim, I haven't even played it yet and I'm extremely excited about it. But then I did say "mainly sequels". And new generations always bring new IP. At this stage in a generation, nobody is willing to take a risk on something new. You can build a brand better if you get in on a generation early. Like Gears. This has been a seriously lengthy generation and things are starting to get long in the tooth. Having said that, this has probably been my favourite generation of all time. The 360 is almost certainly my favourite console of all time. But still, I'm ready for the next one now. We've reached the limit.

As for the hardware, I'm of the opinion that it's not going to be quite as "cutting edge" as the 360 was. I think they finalised the spec a while back with plans to release it around about now, but thanks to Kinect, the WiiU looking a bit suspect and absolutely nothing from Sony, they're just sitting on it. They might beef it up a bit in time for release (whenever that will be - I reckon late 2012 early 2013), but they could feasibly roll it out tomorrow if they wanted to. So yeah, they've got plenty of time to get their hardware cheaper, cooler and more efficient whilst they sit on it.

That's total speculation on my part by the way. Regardless of whether or not that's all bollocks, I think they'll be testing the hell out of the hardware this time around to an extent perhaps never seen before. As for your point about people starting to accept console failures, I don't really agree. Had MS not offered a three-year warranty on the 360, I seriously doubt people would've been as accepting. People accepted that the first few iterations of the console were prone to overheating because they knew they could get them replaced if they did. I seriously doubt people are just starting to accept that their £300 bits of kit are going to blow up in a few years time and that's the way it goes. And don't worry about derailing the thread - it's just a little side conversation. If more people get involved, a nice mod usually splits it out!

NB: I'd like to add, I dispute your accusations of me "bumming Gears sequels" etc. I only got Gears 3 the other day and I don't think I've even commented on anything with regards to the actual game yet - I just posted a little story about buying the game second hand... Gears 2 came out in 2008 and I admit I enjoyed that. "CoD games in general" isn't really true either. See my whinging about how shite I thought the MW3 campaign was. I do enjoy the multiplayer, I'll give you that. I also moaned a lot about Battlefield 3 being a shite cousin of the PC version. Forza 4 is excellent, but undeniably a lot more of the same. As far as I can remember, the only game I've really bummed in the last six months or so has been Dark Souls. GIVE ME A NEW CONSOLE!

In brief summary, I'm not entirely down on this year's releases, nor am I totally sick of this generation. There are still games I definitely want to play. Loads of games. But I don't think I could take another round of sequels after this one without a new console appearing. Gears 4, Forza 5, Uncharted 4, Ass Creed 48, etc. No thanks. Also, I'd be happy to leave this year's sequels (that I haven't bothered playing yet) behind were a new console to come out tomorrow. I've done pretty much everything there is to be done this generation and feel like we're just treading over the same - albeit mightily refined - ground. NEW CONSOLE PLZ!

Thanks, Doc - I'll check that tonight.

This game is briliant. It's almost a little too big, but brilliant.

I also like that the hardness of the enemies is so variable. I tooled through the first dungeon crawl with one accidental death, and felt pretty RAAAR, but up the 7,000 steps I was a little too lulled into a false sense of security having spent most of it hitting wolves in the face and chasing goats off the cliffs. The

frost troll that jumps out then promptly killed me with two swipes
. A nice variation. Similary with some of the quests (e.g. in the first Companions one I got killed in short order by the first bandit I encountered) and "random" encounters - I learned fairly quickly to save more often.

Anyway, great game. how do I learn about crafting potions and that, in game, I mean, rather than trial and error or looking on the internet?

If you eat an ingredient it reveals the first of four hidden effects, such as restore health, damage magicka etc. Then you can combine ingredients with matching effects. Experimenting with ingrediens can reveal more of their hidden effects, so like combining health things with poisons or such.

I am the anti-Cookie. I'm 45 hours in, I've done two Companions missions, one Thieves Guild mission, no College missions and I haven't found the Dark Brotherhood. I'm only as far as the Diplomatic Immunity quest in the main quest line. I haven't joined the Legion or the Stormcloaks.

I've done all the mages and the thieves, and a slew of misc quests. I really loved the thief questline.

heh me too, Iv done some sporadic questing about the place and, in an attempt to move on in the game I joined the storm cloaks because YEEEAAAHH REBEEELL and then immediately found them to be way too intolerant for my tastes, almost verging on faccism... I regret it but iv gone too far to load an earlier save :'( can I get out of it by betraying them and killing a few or something?

I've finished the main quest now, which is a first for an Elder Scrolls game, so hats off to them for making it interesting this time. I can't even remember what Oblivion was about, bar that stupid annoying heir guy.

Anyway, great stuff, but a little short and the end was way, way too easy. Tsun was a bit of an arse, mind.

I broke.

I'll be tidying up dungeons and shouting at dragons till they fall over LIKE A WUSS soon enough.

The main reason I'm buying it is so I can be more critical of it when comparing it to:

Dark Souls.

Heh. Is it bad that I've now started yelling at the assorted NPCs in Whiterun every time they shoot off their one line of dialogue when I walk past? Particularly the git who hangs around outside Belethor's General Goods. "You know the problem with Skyrim these days? Everyone is obsessed with death!" NO, YOU CUNT! YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE WHO'S OBSESSED WITH IT! NOBODY ELSE EVEN FUCKING MENTIONS IT! SHUT THE FUCK UP!
*gasp, pant*
Sorry.

YOU'RE THE ONLY ONE WHO'S OBSESSED WITH IT! NOBODY ELSE EVEN FUCKING MENTIONS IT! SHUT THE FUCK UP!

Agreed. Why on earth they felt the library, big room at the bottom, and Archmage's quarters needed to be separate areas I have no idea.

The guy on the second floor of the sleeping halls place in the college has 2 daedra hearts for sale in his shop, if anyone's after them. He restocks every 2 days.

They're pricey, but it's nice to have a full set of daedric armour and weppins.

Still can't play this due to 1.2 patch fuck-ups. Still waiting for a patch. Still really fed up about it.

Ooh - found out earlier that if you accidentally fill a good soul gem with a poxy soul, dropping it on the ground empties it.

Think I'm nearly finished the mages guild quests :)
ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
just got the staff of Magnus. Hope I get to hold into it, its pretty nifty.

I haven't really crafted any armour beyond experimenting right at the start and making stuff out of leather. Is there a part in the game which prompts you to make more or has everyone else just started experimenting? At what point do you start getting the option to make armour out of more interesting materials? Note that I've not interacted with a forge for ages.

Each material has a perk related to it in the smithing tree - so take the dwarven perk to make dwarven armour/weapons etc.

Ah...I have totally ignored the smithing tree in the perks. Will have to remedy that.

On that note, I have no idea what I'm doing with souls etc. how do they work, how do I get them and what am I supposed to do with them??

There's a spell/enchantment called Soul Trap. It makes it so that if you kill a creature while the spell is active, and you have an empty soul gem, you'll capture the creature's soul. Filled soul gems can be used to enchant weapons/armour and recharge enchanted weapons.

There are 6 types of soul gem - petty, common, lesser, greater, grand, and black. The tougher the creature whose soul you take, the larger a soul gem it fills, and the better the enchantment is when you use it. Black soul gems are the same as grand, but are the only ones that can take human souls.

Larger soul gems can contain smaller souls, if you've got no empty smaller gem at the time. The type of soul in a filled soul gem will show up in brackets - eg Greater Soul Gem (Common)
