Is it significantly better than anything else you currently have?

Why are the batteries so expensive?

Bobbyaro wrote:

Yes it is better:

Shoots onto card not tape (although the official Sony cards are 150 sovs for 8 gb (20 minutes)).
Better lens.
Shoots full HD 1920x1080i or 720p and a load of other formats.
Uses XDCAM codec while still MPEG 2 is better than the HDV codec I currently use.
Does slow-mo (records at 50fps for playback at 25fps)
Produces gorgeous images.
Uncompressed audio. Problem with HDV is that it uses 320k MPEG2 audio which has issues.
The timelapse feature from the old PDX-10 is back. Hoorah!
The images look more expensive and therefore the finished videos look better so I can charge more.
Shoots progressive which is a boon for stuff to be played back on a PC because deinterlacing is a pain and it always looks shit.

The batteries are so expensive because nobody is producing cheaper clone versions that I can see. + The clone versions I currently use in my Z1 have an awful habit of reporting lots of time left and then just dropping out.

I'll still keep the Z1 (pictured below) but it will become a second unit. It's 3 years old now and tape based which means its had wear and tear. I'll flog the PDX-10.

Image

Long term I'll flog the Z1 as well and replace it with a small tape based camera like an A1E. Tape is still useful as is a small camera.

Not a toy and not my money. Well not my money kind of. Business purchase innit. If I don't spend it before the end of July, Gordon Brown gets the money.

Garage door is fine. Just need to press stop *before* it hits the ground and winds around itself. Stupid bloody thing.

Did you get it when you first got your PS3 Grim...? I've played it for about 15 hours now since I got it and I still keep spotting small details that bring the whole thing to life. I managed to sneak past Zio on the leaderboards the other day - well until such time as he spots it.

Post subject:  Re: Bits and Bobs X

We're moving offices next weekend - from our nice if worn n' torn office in Central Cardiff to a new purpose-built building in Canton.

And I swear, it's been designed by management cretins who have no fucking clue what sort of work we do, how we do it, or what 'common sense' is.

The entrance gate into the parking lot is only wide enough for one car. It also seems entirely possible to slither under this gate, due to the shape of the slope underneath it.

There's motorcycle parking spaces... but they're not covered. The bicycle racks, however, are. When I questioned the manager about this, he just shrugged and mumbled something about 'just try and get it as far under the cycle shelter as you can'.

The other access route is so narrow that passing someone coming the otherway will be tricky at best and dangerous at worst. You aren't allowed to use umbrellas on it. And we will all be issued hi-vis vests. Because the path is immediately adjacent to the South Wales Main Line. Put an umbrella up and it might well be clipped by a passing train.

Into the office itself, and the desks have been arranged by idiots. At the moment, myself and the three other people I need to speak to constantly are all arranged in a cube of desks, facing each other. Now our desks are a long crescent, so we're all sitting in a row 20 feet long. And other people we need to speak to regularly are miles away.

Air conditioning is provided by air vents IN THE FLOOR. Cold air falls, remember. And just wait until someone drops money/credit cards/entry passcard down there. Further, we aren't allowed to adjust the air conditioning any more. We have to call someone else so they can do it for us.

We're no longer allowed to eat ANYTHING at our desks. Unlike the majority of other office jobs, things can kick off really suddenly in my work, so eating at your desk is a good idea so you don't come back in after your 15 minutes of lunchbreak a day to a crisis in full swing. No, we now have to eat in the 'breakout' area. But what if something kicks off while we're out there? Well, say the Brent-esque managers who conceived this place, there's a phone so they can call to tell you you need to come back in. Everyone has said unless I'm allowed to bring my half-eaten lunch in with me, you can fuck off.

They're also insisting on shirts and ties for men (women, naturally can dress however they like and that's fine) despite the fact no member of the public will ever come into the office, ever. You're also no longer allowed to hang your coat/jacket/company fleece on the back of your chair. Which will likely last as long as it takes for something to be nicked from someone's coat hanging up in the stupid wardrobes they've installed.

Everything in our current office works fine. We are within talking distance of everyone we need to hear, we get all our work done, everything is fine. So naturally, pointy haired bosses have to fuck with it.
