Seen the season finale yeasterday. I like this show, but i got the impression that it could be so much better. Looking back, nothing much happened in this season, mostly because while the writers were aiming for more character development the characters are mostly, with probably the exception of Daryl, the asian guy and Herschel (and his cute daughter of course), completely uninteresting or annoying. But most of all Lori and Carl are the most unlikable characters that i can think of. Lori in particular must die. Painfully.

"Get in the house, Carl!"
CUT TO: Carl isn't in the house.

Most annoyingly imperilled offspring since Jack Bauer's daughter in 24.

Yeah, The Walking Dead's main problem is that I wouldn't really give a tiny shit if the whole lot of them got et.

Not sure how ai felt about most of this episode. I struggle to recall who is who at times. I feel less blue balled than at the end of the last series but still very 'meh'. When it is good, it's awesome, otherwise it is Terra Nova with dead people.

Isn't that because:

a) They didn't have any money

and

b) Darabont fucked off?

I loved the first series but I'd already decided to give the second series a miss before it started.

Darabont got binned off, didn't he? Scour io9 for various half-stories about this and what he had planned if he'd stayed.

I think that other than a slow start, the second series was better than the first. It really ramped up throughout the series until very thing came to a head at the end.

Very interested to see where it goes next series.

People are right - they should add some people I care about soon. Or at least some popsies to augment the one they've got presently. I''d watch it even if it were just zombies wandering around, but they could make me give more of a fuck about the humans.

I found the shot of the big prison and appearance of the person with the zombies on chains to be portents of utter tedium and perhaps an ill-advised swerve into Mad Max territory. Hope I'm wrong.

Tedium? I thought it looked awesome!

I'm avoiding spoilers, but from what I've heard the prison is supposed to be awesome, and anything but boring.

As best I can tell (and this ties in with what I read at the time), he was increasingly under pressure from the studio to make more programmes, for less money, in less time, with ridiculous edicts coming from the studio such as 'film half of it indoors to save cash' - and Darabont wasn't prepared to take it lying down.

“…I was really given no choice. I don’t understand the thinking behind, ‘Oh, this is the most successful show in the history of basic cable. Let’s gut the budgets now.’ I never did understand that and I think they got tired of hearing me complain about it. It’s a little more complicated than that, but that’s as far as I want to go with it because otherwise it’s just provoking more controversy and that’s not really of interest to me. I just want to keep my head down and do my job and be allowed to do my job, that’s key, and continue to, hopefully, enjoy it and do good work.”

Can't see the problem with the prison (could be a nice mix of safe haven but with caged walkers*) but yeah, the Samurai Zombie S&M dude was a little jarring at the end. Intrigued to find out what all that's about.

Crossbow Redneck dude is by far the best character.

Suffice to say, it's a cool new character that people who've read the books have been waiting to encounter.

I don't care if it's a man or a woman.

As long as it slaughters Lori.

What a cunt she was in that last episode.

Yeah, about four episodes ago my wife started actively rooting for the zombies. I'm not quite at that stage but holy crap this show needs to add a few characters I give a toss about. That being said, even with its dragging pace and glaring flaws the second season was a definite improvement over the first.

Also: this is the first thing my son has watched that elicited the response "it's OK but I preferred the comic." I've raised the next generation of Internet nerd-snob. I could not be more proud. :D

Still like it, nonetheless I'm glad of the break. Game of thrones for a bit, then Dr. Who, then Walking dead again. That'll do.

I've still been enjoying it, but the end of Series 2 was a bit of an abrupt shift. All of a sudden Rick's all like "I'M IN CHARGE" for no particular reason I could discern (christ knows enough similar setbacks have happened in the past that could have triggered it if that's all it takes for him to go Absolute Ruler on them), and Lori gets pissed at him because he defends himself from the Shane. I can understand Lori getting pissed randomly as OH MY GOD SHE'S THE MOST ANNOYING CHARACTER IN THE WORLD ACTED BY ONE OF THE MOST ANNOYING ACTORS, but the Rick thing was just odd.

How was the Rick thing odd?

His inaction had at least indirectly brought about a lot of bad things for the group, including a lot of deaths. He reckons had he done things his way things would have been better, and needs to stand up for himself more to protect his family and his people.

It was such an abrupt thing, though, and if a fuck up was all it too, he'd made enough of them in the past. It just seemed out of character - more like Shane than like Rick.

One could argue that

in order to get rid of Shane he had to become more like Shane, raising the questions for S3 over whether he'll be able to retain his humanity better than Shane did when confronted with hard decisions. Rick has managed to stay as a good guy, on the whole, but now...

Pretty much this. An almost constant motif in the comics is Rick swithering over how much of a bastard to be. On one hand if he acts really hardcore and controlling he's probably keeping people alive; but if any of his decisions backfire he personally has doomed everyone because he's brooked no arguments. Also, there's some agonising over the fact that living a more paranoid and cynical life eats away at your humanity a bit thus raising the question of whether it's then 'worth' surviving to live such a life. The end to season 2 is them presumably ramping that up to begin bringing things into line with the comic version of Rick and his dynamic with the rest of the group. I can't actually remember what triggered that change in the comics but I suspect it was some of the later more harrowing events that they haven't got to yet in the TV series, which would probably make it more of an understandable attitude change. For whatever pacing reasons though they've brought that character change forward which maybe does undermine it a bit.

Well, yes, that was the case in the comics, but in the TV series that element of Rick's character has been completely absent up until now, hence my feeling this was a bit of an abrupt personality change.

The bit that was a spoiler was the bit you've not hidden in your original post!

HE'S IN THE YOUTUBE PICTURE IN ZAPHOD'S POST!

Which I can't see.

I don't live in your eyeballs, so I was unaware of this.

That post was 3 months ago and i dont think that was the 'still' image from youtube when it was first posted (but i've no idea if it was) - I've put the video in spoiler tags now.

ZOMG Spoiler! Click here to view!
The character was also in an episode of season 2 as a spirit

Well, yes, that was the case in the comics, but in the TV series that element of Rick's character has been completely absent up until now, hence my feeling this was a bit of an abrupt personality change.

For whatever pacing reasons though they've brought that character change forward which maybe does undermine it a bit.

It's not just bringing the character change forward, it's completely leaving out any build up to it. The comics had a lot of foreshadowing on Rick going nutzoid - and, more importantly, he was given far, far more reason to do so.

I thought it was a rather sudden change.

I haven't read the books, but I thought the character changes happens because in the books, there is no Shane, Shane was Rick's Alter ego, which they had to adapt for TV. So the Character change, such that it is, is the Shane (Bad) element of Ricks Psyche taking over. In practical terms then, it would have been better for Shane to kill Rick, although you can't do that, as then there would be no Egg.
