Don't suppose the Mac demo is available anywhere, is it?

I've got the full creature creator on order from Game - it may not be much, but should be worth a fiver - but I'd like to get going ASAP.

A 'dna' strand for the creature is stored in the images metadata, in case anyone wanted to know how that worked.

I'd guessed as much although hadn't gotten around to cracking the PNG open to have a looksee. Damned clever work, that is.

Interesting article by the New York Times that was cited in the wiki. Makes intriguing reading.

http://www.nytimes.com/2006/10/08/magaz ... ted=1&_r=1

Man, I was only mildly interested in Spore before this weekend, not knowing that much about it. Now I'm really excited. Also, according to the article EA are considering a customised plastic figure service, knocking out to-order toys of your creations! (Probably not Goatse's though.)

I'll be happy if this comes out for the 360. If not, I'll get over it.

Y'know, I think this'll be the first game ever that I preorder. Yes.

And we really should get round to having a forum BETEO creature-compo. Yes, a creature called BETEO, on the planet of Excellence. And if we don't have a compo, then I bagsy the name.

But I may do as Mimi did, and take the plunge and get the full Creature Creator. Hope the full version doesn't have that annoying static bug, mind.

Man, I'm getting stupidly excited about this game. I haven't been this excited about a game since... oooh... Civ 4 or maybe Lord of the Rings Online. ("I hate you especially," - :attitude: )

I can see the potential this has if I have the time to put in to it. One for a rainy weekend, I think.

Is it possible to have a BETEO planet inhabited by all our creations? Or a galaxy of BETEO planets living in harmony, taking over the universe?

It might be. They'd be a bit daft not to allow you the option to lock a good chunk of your galaxy's planets to reserved slots for your friends creatures.

I had a brief play of the creator this afternoon during lunch, but I'll need to have a timely session of madness this evening if I get time.

I created a crocodile-type creature, then some enormous, hideous leggy thing. I'd love to try to create the luggage from Discworld, but I'm fucked if I know how I'd go about making a chest-shaped creature.

Some of the ones in that Something Awful thread are just brilliantly inspired. The cavalier and biker ones are ace.

Uh-oh. You should not have linked that file, Richard.

I was relieved that the character creator didn't seem to be available for the Mac. I would not get sucked in. I would wait until the game was out. But, now you have posted it. I couldn't help myself. I clicked, I am downloading. A few seconds left... Finished now.

Say goodbye to the rest of the day, Mimi, say goodbye...

From what I heard a year or so back, I thought the characters would end up random-looking, dependent on what their environment was/what they fed on. Is this still not part of it?

Annoyingly, on my Mac it will only load characters I've made during the current session. If I close it and come back it says I have 5 creations, but won't show any of them in the creature browser and I can't load them using the drag and drop method.

Weird.

Hmm. I uninstalled the torrent demo and installed the official one, and now it won't load up. The loading screen pops up for a few seconds and then it disappears and back to desktop. Any ideas? :(

My God, that's terrifying, Nynfortoo.

I've just pre-ordered. Any idea when the Spore Creature Creator full version is available to download Mimi. I have discovered the EA store site to be baffling and crap. And if it's available already, how do I get at it?

*Update*

Hmm, well apparently although its out on Direct2Drive already, it's not out via the EA Download Manager yet. They're estimating around 11:00PM, which makes a mockery of their trumpeted 17/06/08 release date. Also, I'm astonished at how many broken links and timeouts the EA store has. It processed my order jim-dandy, but when I actually wanted to find confirmation of it and find out the availability of the download it kept randomly refusing my password or timing out. I eventually got in and found it was correctly ordered, but it took an hour and a bit of trying. I was beginning to worry I'd be phished or something.

I don't think I'll be using the EA Store anytime soon again, it's rather poor.

*Update Update*

Reading a gripes thread about the sites uselesness in a forum tucked away on the site through an obscure link. The Poorly Educated Prize goes to... *Drum Roll*

Trinket!

Quote:
I am England, in the center of the UK, which is currently running on GMT+1, hence when it is 10pm GMT, it is 11pm in the UK.

This applies to the whole of the UK, not just England.

I hope this answers your question "Mr KhalidIbn".

Mr Seloth steps in with words of wisdom...

Quote:
Um...Trinket...or should I call you Englandthats very very inaccurate..GMT stands for greenwich mean time, asthe solar time at the obervatory in Greenwich London...The Uk,Porugal and Ireland are all GMT...GMT +1 is most of mainland Europe

So yes...10pm GMT is 10pm where you are...not 11pm as t would be,say in France.

But Trinket is not unswayed...

Quote:
The UK being England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. Portugal, Ireland and the rest of Europe is not part of the UK.

And yes, we are on GMT+1 at the moment. GMT currently is 12.23, and it is now 13.23 in the UK.

And Lil'l Blossom adds to the folly...

Quote:
Actually Trinket is correct. You have to take daylight savings into consideration, and therefore UK until late october is on GMT +1 and mainland Europe (and Scandinavia) is on GMT +2.

So, if Spore comes out at 10pm GMT, it is then midnight in mainland Europe and therefore June 18th. (and 11pm UK time)

Awesome. Anyway, the thread is here for those of you pondering why EA Store is complete gubbins.

I believed that GMT included the Summertime +1 - ah. I am almost certainly wrong. How ironic.

My niggling honesty means that I cannot edit the above post. *Sigh* Cocking around with the EA Store site has melted me brain cells. :'(

Oh, and just found out that -

1: The full Creature Creator download will be made available via the EA Download Manager.

2: Apparently it was the installed EA Download Manager that was causing my Spore demo to crash. Technical support says I'll have to uninstall it to get the Spore Demo/Creature Creator to work.

Nice.

*Sigh* ;)

I wonder how much of the net is at work making something perverse of what was meant to be wonderous? (See Armando Iannucci for the answer: ALL OF IT)

Anyway, it's downloaded, finally. I'm trying to make the Puppeteer out of Larry Niven's Ringworld as part of experimenting. My Grumbala is still my dearest though.

Well, I bought the full creator (I'm thinking of it as a deposit on Spore itself), and I managed to somehow find the EA Download Manager. So now it's all sitting nicely on my computer, but it was far too late to play with it last night.

The extra 75% of parts better be interesting. Howard needs an upgrade.

I too bought the full thing. Didn't pre-order though. And yeah, there are some great new mouths and things! The eyes pete used, for instance, scare the hell out of me. I love the puns on the names of the body parts. The Two Paw/Three Paw/Four Paw/More Paw one made me giggle :/

ALSO:
If you drag a creature file into spore when you have the creature-editor open it starts to edit that creature! Amazing. Infact, you can drag a creature into spore at pretty much any point and it'll add it. Classy.

ADDITOINALLY:
http://eu.spore.com/sporepedia/index.cf ... tsearch=Go

People seem to like my Snuggraffe!

FURTHERMORE:
The spore site/sporepedia is craptastic. You can't even search for users or anything. Nor delete what things you've uploaded (hence why I have dupes). Psh.

From what I've heard the game is pretty much finished, and the bulk of development is taken up developing Sporepedia and associated websites and support.

Work faster, devs! >:|

And I love Snuggraffe too, Pod. I'm sure him and my Puppeteer will have lots of froclically fun together. Maybe up until your Snuggraffe eats him. I gave it a thumbs up, by the way!

From the EA website:

Quote:
Q: Won’t my planet become over-crowded with everyone’s creatures being downloaded into my world?

A: Your game will only download as many creatures, buildings, and vehicles as it needs to build a great experience for you. If you have created a list of buddies, their creations will be prioritized when the game needs to download new things. This system keeps your game fresh, and makes sure there are always lots of cool new things to encounter as you explore the universe of Spore.

Clarifications ie: Microtransactions:

Quote:
Sharing or “downloading” player created content is a core feature of Spore, not at all something that is part of the Spore Store or even under consideration for additional charge. The entire game is based on players making creatures, buildings, and vehicles which can be accessed from what we call our Sporepedia – a web based collection of all player created assets.

The Spore Store simply gives players the ability to purchase out-of-game merchandise such as t-shirts and posters or any additional game products we might make down the road such as expansion packs. For example, we are working with a company to provide the option for 3D versions of a player’s creature to be made and the Spore Store is where that purchase would originate. We have also mentioned that we will be providing the Creature Creator tool as a stand alone product in the month or two before the game launches so that players can begin to design their creatures, but we do not have plans to sell individual parts via micro-transactions.

Phew.

Do you think that 'buddies' can be made across platforms?

What I mean is, do you think that I can share content with my smelly windows friends even though I'm on a Mac? :smug:

From what I've heard the game is pretty much finished, and the bulk of development is taken up developing Sporepedia and associated websites and support.

And I love Snuggraffe too, Pod. I'm sure him and my Puppeteer will have lots of froclically fun together. Maybe up until your Snuggraffe eats him. I gave it a thumbs up, by the way!

Excellent!
The snuggraffe wasn't ment to be a carnivore, but that's the only type of mouth that was available at the time! :(

I have a new creation, done just now! The Ambushius Snappio. A deadly plant, to be sure.

It was annoying to colour in though :( Why? Well, this is what it looks like in the editor:

Check out that pretty purple flower! All the lady flies would want to sit on that, right?

Well in-game it looks like this (ignoring the anti-aliasing and shizzle that the "photo" button does).

HMPH. It appears that even if you select "clear style" for the detail and coat textures, it will still use the colour selected to change the way bits of the creature look. :(

I'm just stupidly excited about the idea of being able to buy a 3D plastic toy of your own creature creation.

Like the ambushy plant! Shame about the flower colouring problem. Wonder if I could make a triffid? Hmm. ;)

I cannot think of a good reason why not. The datatypes should be the same unless the developers are amazingly stupid.

What is yours?

Rev Owen: Your crockobee looks far too happy. Has he just blugeoned an Australian adventurer to death with his tail then fed him to his kids?

I uploaded four different monsters yesterday, but it's only showing two of them - though it's showing one of them twice. D'oh.
