It also is i5 only and weighs half a kilo more than the MBA. The SpectreXT looks likely to be an i7, but it isn't available in the UK.

Pricing looks to be about comparable to the MBA.

That is madness, unless it is a lot better... which I doubt.

Is it fuck. HP bought out a company called Voodoo a few years back. Basically Voodoo were one of the few companies (inc Falcon Northwest) that tried to take on Alienware and failed.

So basically HP bought out Voodoo hoping to pull a frito bandito number on Dell who had bought out Alienware and, well, they failed.

Envy laptops are ridiculously over priced under powered rubbish in a somewhat nice looking shell with "Voodoo DNA". In other words one of the old Voodoo employees designs them and then HP sit and laugh as people pay a grand for a laptop with a fucking I3 in.

Dude i know you mean well, but you are talking out of your arse again!

Have you checked out Rock, Craster?

They use the same components as Alienware yet are cheaper and have a more broad range. They're still expensive, mind.

I remember the boss having one at work, but we use Elitebooks as they have a bit more grunt, and asuming I am still employed get a new one in November..

They don't do small and light, unfortunately. They're more big and powerful.

I'm not sure what the Envy Spectre range (ultrabooks) have to do with gaming laptops at all. It's like dissing the MacBook Air because it won't run BF3 on max settings. I fail to see what the Voodoo buyout has to do with this thread at all.

I didn't say they had anything to do with gaming did I? What I said was who made them and where they came from, and that they were over priced.

The only reason it would really need Hyperthreading is if he's editing video or using apps that support 4+ threads.

An I5 is an I7 without Hyperthreading.

Very rarely would you need HT in a laptop unless you were using it as a complete desktop replacement.

I literally do not know where to begin with this. It's entirely irrelevant and wrong on at least two counts.

So the Alienware machines that Dell now make are the same as the ones they made pre-buyout? You are talking codswallop, sir - good day!

The insides are still made by Clevo. So whilst they may look different due to redesign they are still using the same methods, yes.

Just throwing this out there

1) A laptop that's small and light enough to carry around easily. My current machine has a 13" screen and weighs just under a kilo. I'm expecting to need to go bigger, but not too much bigger.
2) A decent amount of ideally SSD storage - 256Gb if possible, but definitely 128Gb or higher
3) Enough grunt to do a decent amount of image processing - rendering previews of 18Mb images in Lightroom takes a bit of oomph.
4) Not bothered about playing games other than old stuff.
5) Not a mac.
6) Price...negotiable. Don't want to spend silly money, but I'll pay to get what I want.

As I read it, Craster wants small, light and powerful. I'm not sure arguing about random desktop replacement or gaming laptop behemoths is entirely the point :D

I'll keep a decent sized OSX partition on there. It'll be useful to have it for xcode if nothing else.

But seriously, is there actually £200 worth of difference betweethis and this

Really? Because as far as I can see, for £200 pounds more, you're getting an annoying reflective screen, a tiny disk (as compared to a ssd + standard drive, which can be swapped out anyway), and a saving of 0.2kg. And the need to faff around getting windows on it. (and maybe extra cost for that too)

 I don't get it, seems utterly mad.

Based on the PC Pro review I just read, it has a silly 16 GB unchangeable SSD, an inferior screen, an inferior keyboard, and an inferior touchpad. And it doesn't really have the CPU grunt Craster wanted, and doesn't appear to come in any higher spec models that I could see.

It's like for like in terms of CPU grunt with the Mac that was offered as a comparison. Inferior screen? Same resolution as the mac, and without the gloss finish that means you can actually see it when there's a little bit of light around. It was just a pointer that you end up paying considerably more for something with the apple name on it, which typically isn't as well featured. Inferior Keyboard and Touchpad? Really? I didn't notice any huge difference with an air. Well, asde from the sheer smallness of it being annoying for use. And I'm not a larger Gentleman.

I'm paying a little more for them to sell me a product that nobody else is willing to sell me. You can't buy a Samsung i7 Ultrabook in the UK. Or an HP. Or an Acer.
