Regardless, it's worth playing because it's so divisive.

Like Dead Rising, or Dark Souls.

Although the difference between those and MGS4 is I came out of MGS4 thinking "it was alright, stupid long cutscenes and nonsensical plot, meh". I'm glad I played it though.

Definitely not the worst game ever though. And yes it's self-indulgent on Hideo's part, but the fact that he had the gall to make a game so ridiculously self-indulgent deserves your time. Or something. It's a big moment in video game history, good or bad, is what I think I mean. Therefore you should play it!

It has us arguing about it four years later.

Read the first paragraph:

Quote:
The first "act" is fun, but too cutscene-y. The second is less cut-sceney, and the best part of the game. The first level of the third act is neat and pretty fun, mostly sneaky with some chances for killin'. There is one level very near the end that is fun ( I got killed on my first go, then got through it without getting spotted once on my second in about half an hour. It was probably the best bit of the game

Assuming you can skip the cut scenes then the word 'fun' is pretty much undiluted there. The rest of the (admittedly hilarious) raging is based almost entirely around how shit the plot is and, as someone who's barely had any contact with MGS games, even I know that Hideo Kojima can't write a coherent story to save his life so it's not like that should be high on anyone's expectation list.

Not to disagree but, I disagree. It's a fucking appalling travesty of a game. It's barely that since you barely walk from one tiny area to the next without a massive cut scene stopping you enjoying yourself. There's actually very little game in there at all. There's no room for stealth in any of the levels bar one. I'd imagine if you skipped all the cut scenes you'd wonder why it was over so soon. I'd imagine if you'd watch all the cut scenes you'd wonder why it's never fucking ending. A terrible, terrible mess of a game. Worse shit you'll ever play. And, yes, mid game installation. Multiplayer is a load of wank too.

I just can't get in to MGS4. I've tried and tried, and just can't.

Having said that, I said the same about MGS3 to start off with.

MGS3 is genuinely brilliant though. Let's all just take that away from this thread today.

Was 3 the one that was a normal MGS game, but then the entire second half was 2 boss fights and 2 hour-long cutscenes? With the dashing around stabby dude?

MGS2 had a ridiculously long cutscene towards the end (it was at least an hour and a half long) and you couldn't pause it, only skip. So if you wanted to know the story, you had no choice but to sit and watch through the bloody thing.

MGS3 is one of my favourite games and ranks up with Frontier and UFO as games that I can replay endlessly.

I got pissed off with the one on the playstation 2 where you ran about naked for a bit, then had to fight wave after wave of robot chicken things. That was shit.

I run around naked quite a lot, but that's not important right now.

That's quite a thing to say, considering that Frontier and UFO are two games I constantly go back to, all these years later (well, them and Sid Meier's Pirates!).

Apparently Sony are knocking out the downloadable Vita version for £19.99 on PSN on Friday, whilst the physical boxed product costs a little more in most places. It's just a question of whether or not I can fit it on my already over-burdened 16GB memory card, as I think this is going to be a definite purchase for me.

MGS3 has a surprising level of replay value - not in the same league as UFO or Frontier though. Although even with those two, the replay value largely comes down to just doing the same things over and over again and not advancing the plot, which is not a criticism you can level at MGS3.

Just setting different challenges for yourself immediately makes it a different game. The second playthrough was a no alarm/no kill run, which was fucking hard, but was immense fun. Third playthrough was to get all of the Kerotan frogs. Fourth playthrough was to kill everybody via throat-slitting, etc. etc.

And let's not forget the Easter eggs! MGS3 is crammed to the brim with so much stuff. It's really rather impressive.

Did you know: Naked Snake had two motion capture actors for the cutscenes. One action scene specialist, and one who specialised in talky/dramatic mocap. Kojima had the action specialist do the dramatic scenes, and vice versa. That's why Snake's body language is so awkward throughout, and particularly in romantic scenes.

That comes across as 'most of the game is actually good fun but there's a massive number of awful cutscenes and some weird design decisions near the end' which isn't the most damning review I've ever read. Indeed now I want to see how awful the cutscenes are so I can giggle at them until bored and then hit the skip button.

Did you skip the conclusion?

Note how pretty much every complaint he has is about a cut scene rather than the gameplay. Cutscenes are skippable if you don't like them.
