That is a worry, in any multi-game... game, if one section is shite then it can bring the whole thing down.

I'm sure it's not a bad representation of the sport, but I happen to really hate drifting - it just seems pointless to me.

Post subject:  Re: Upcoming Racing Games on X360

Agreed, I was actually more impressed with the physics in that mode than the other 2... it's just not fun and adds to the alight lingering feeling that what we have here is Need for Speed : Race Driver.

Post subject:  Re: Upcoming Racing Games on X360

I need to make an apology to Grid. I tried it again today and transformed my opinion on the physics once I got a handle on them. The flashback is still shit, the drifting will never work and fake cars is a bit shit for the old TOCA series but the main game seems a hell of a lot more solid now and I was wrong.

Post subject:  Re: Upcoming Racing Games on X360

So are you buying it now, or still waiting for £17.99? I'm going to go back to the demo, but I need to find out if the drifting is integral to the game, because if it is it's a dealbreaker for me.

Author:  Dudley [ Mon May 19, 2008 10:09 ]
Post subject:  Re: Upcoming Racing Games on X360

Indeed, that's my problem. The drifting, still bobbins, both for physics and game structure reasons. Any time you're competing against a computer car where you have no indication how you're doing and it doesn't decide the score till the end is hideous, and the fact the mode doesn't appeal really doesn't help.

So yeah, I doubt I'll preorder in the hope someone else will and I can't find out if I can avoid drifting (I don't really mind if I can't complete career mode, I just don't want to miss out on cars and tracks).

We'll see.

There may of course be another just as dodgy mode we've not yet encountered too.

I bought it with my Box, and recently re-bought it, despite having to start from scratch. It's still immensely good fun, and I spent most of last weekend playing it. I had much more fun than in say, Burnout Paradise TBH.

Post subject:  Re: Upcoming Racing Games on X360

Later on, yes, but the application of faster, better cars helps. Certainly for the price, I think it's top fun.

Post subject:  Re: Upcoming Racing Games on X360

I don't really consider the AI in something like RR as even competitors so they annoy me a lot less than say, when a TOCA game pulls that trick.

Only for about the last 5% of the World Explorer. Which I am stuck on. I have a go at it every month or so but it really does cheat like fuck - the instant you set off half of them employ triple nitrous and fuck the fuck off.

For the rest of it it does cheat but not quite as unfairly as the much later sections.

Does anyone know of a decent rallying game on the 360 in the vein of the old Colin McRae games, or do they know if you can do the full WRC in DiRT?

Author:  Dudley [ Wed May 21, 2008 17:44 ]
Post subject:  Re: Upcoming Racing Games on X360

Dirt is the nearest you'll get, you could never do the "full" WRC in any game as far as I'm aware, but select (mostly fictional) stages from each event, Dirt I'm pretty certain provides that but you might have to tunnel through all the other modes to get to it.

Post subject:  Re: Upcoming Racing Games on X360

I quite like GRID, but it's been annoying me far too much. Not the lack of a remotely credible tire model, I can cope with that, but the hugely aggressive AI that will push you round into the barriers every time. It gets really tiring to restart the same race 10 times because you got barged off the track.

I actually liked the drifting. It had a much more natural feel to the handling, and I enjoyed poising the car with a mix of steering and throttle to see-saw my way around the track. Maybe that's why I achieved an insane drift and a close to 500,000 score on my first event (though not my first try, admittedly).

Give me the questions again and I'll answer.

I'm still not 100% decided. I will say when this is £17.99 you WILL want it. I can't quite wholly recommend it at £40 so ask about what you're going to find important.

1. Is the drifting as bad as we first feared from the demo?
2. Is it integral to completing the game, or can you safely ignore it?
3. Is the handling ok once you've got used to it?
4. Is it worth £40?

1. Yes
2. You can largely ignore it. Similar structure and interface to Dirt.
3. Yes
4. No game ever is. £25, maybe.

1) No, it's not half as hard for a start and I got a better handle on it. It's still not good.
2) "completing" yes, kinda. In that there's bonus head to head events for completing an entire tier. You won't miss any of the proper events by avoiding them though, that I can see.
3) I think so, certainly transparent enough so you concentrate on the racing, where it really feels more like an actual "race" than just about anything I've played.
4) Undecided. It's absolutely worth £18. I got it because I had a bonus and I don't regret it but...

I played it for about 5 minutes then deleted it. Worth a play for the accents though it has to be said.

The rest of the game can go and fuck itself. ESPECIALLY the "music" which got turned off after about 20 seconds.

Well they've posted my Nascar 09. I suspect only Myop will care but I'll report back.

Myop - playing some more GRID and while I love huge tracts of what it does, the sponsorship and team stuff especially, there's just too many idiot races, inconsistent styles and the old "Start you near the back in short races" trick which knackers racing because you have to turn the difficulty down and it becomes "Can I pass this guy in 3 laps".

Plus their LeMans implementation is a joke, it's too tricky to drive and laps are nearly a minute quicker than reality.

£17.99 yes.
£39.99? On reflection, no.

By no means is that a gaming abortion.

Oh it's bad. But it's several steps better than I was led to expect. I suspect I'll pay a tenner for it and romp through the story mode having a decent laugh.

Did run across one awful bug with the "jumps" race though that ended with me completing an 8 jump course with credit for 14 jumps.

Synetic made the Mercedes-Benz World Racing games btw.

Simbin were born out of determined GPL/NR modders as I recall. It should be a good game for the racing :nerd: here.
