Despite my generally rubbish taste in music I'd like in too, if only in an effort to broaden my musical horizons.

A handy summary of the set-up (as it currently stands) has now been affixed to the first post in this thread. It's now looking like two groups of seven, two groups of six, which makes things much tidier for a knockout stage. If we can get a couple more players before I draw the groups, that'll level things up nicely, though.

Yup, you're on the list.

I've just looked at the forum polling system and noticed the 'Eurovision' option. That could be very handy (not to mention apt, seeing as we'll be voting on how much we like specific songs), so people could vote for their top three in each group, reducing the chances of people getting no votes at all. This is a very good thing*. I also slightly tempted to hurry things along a little by revising the start dates I've mentioned so far (I've got two killer songs jostling for position as 'first track' in my head right now), but as I've already given some dates earlier in this thread it wouldn't be fair to change things now.

Just in case anyone is clamouring to get their first choices in quick (especially if they're going away from the forum for a couple of weeks), feel free to PM me your choices now, and I'll add them accordingly when the Song War begins. It'd be most helpful if you could send a link to a YouTube file, as that can be embedded in the forum for ease of listening, but if you've just got a link to an mp3 let me know, and I can (probably) convert it to YouTube-o-vision in time for the voting (once I work out how to do that, I've never thought about it before. Lots of people who type out YouTube comments in all caps seem to manage it though, so it can't be too hard).

(* Not least for me, as you just know I'm going to use every excuse to try and win you all around to the majesty of 1960s Europop. Claude François FTW. You'll see.)

Obviuosly, the trick to this will be to enter the B52s' "Loveshack" in every round up to Christmas, and then stick in the SECRET CHRIMBLE SONG.

You need to convert a track into a video, using Windows Movie Maker or similar. It's surprisingly easy to do, just import the mp3 and any jpeg into Movie Maker, bung them onto the timeline, a couple of click-drags (so the picture stays up for the duration of the song), and save. And you'll need a YouTube account, if you don't already have one, but that kind of goes without saying.

If anyone can't find a copy of the track they want on YouTube, and can't upload it to there, point me towards an mp3 of the song in question and I can convert and upload it to my account. You could just as easily use a link to an off-forum MP3, but the ease of use provided by embedded YouTube clips is sure to be a vote winner.

(And just to reiterate for everyone - if you've already chosen a track, feel free to PM me a YouTube link and I can get them ready for kick-off. A few people have submitted tracks so far, and the quality is going to be pretty darned high.)

This might be useful (and quicker, too). Or not, I haven't tried it myself.

Are the first round songs supposed to have a theme or summat? Did I dream that bit?

What year is it? Who's the President? Aaaaaaaaagh!

Nope, it's a free choice for the first week, and a theme of 'cover versions' for the second week. From the third week on, themes chosen by players kick in. So, now's a good time to get that all-time favourite found (unless you're confident of making it to the knockout round, and want to save your all-time most specialist favouritist song until then).

The number of players is currently at 27, meaning we're one away from a comfortable seven players per group. If anyone lurking here, and who isn't one of the following people:

Bluecup
Bobbyaro
Craig
Craster
Kern
Mark X
Mimi
Mr Chris
Mr Russ
myoptika
nervouspete
Nik
Nirejhenge
Plissken
Pundabaya
Rodafowa
Runcle
Scarysheep3000
Sheepeh
Shin
Spinglo Sponglo!
The Rev Owen
tossrStu
TsuMuch
WullieOoster
Zardoz
Zen-Chan

Make your voice heard NOW if you want to bag the 28th place. Anyone joining after that (and before Wednesday, when the exciting group draw will take place) can still be admitted, but you'll really mess up the equilibrium of group numbers.

[edit]

Updated rules now added to first post, including this important bit: Registration closes 6pm Wednesday 24th September 2008. From there, the exciting group draw will take place, ready for the first round of voting from EITHER the following Wednesday, OR as soon as everyone sends me a song for the first week, WHICHEVER happens first.
The full schedule is up there, too.

So - if everyone can get their song choices to me not too long after Wednesday, the voting (and entire contest) can begin.

(28 people * 28 Songs) * 5MB a song = 4GBish a week, for 10 weeks.

You sure Grim...? I wouldn't want to be taking advantage of you generosity.

It would be only 28 songs per week (28 people x 1 song per week, 280 songs in total), so it's not quite that bad. MP3 links are fine, and easy enough to add, but they do necessitate people downloading the file first and then playing it. PRO: If someone likes a song, they've then got a copy of it to listen to, CON: YouTube links can be embedded on the forum to play (relatively) instantly. But either way. I'm not some sort of oppressive ubersongwarfuhrer.

Still good enough to get an overall impression of a song's quality, though. It's like picking up a second-hand paperback of a brilliant book for 25p, then going out and buying a hardback copy of it. Well, except not many people would do that with a book.

I'd more liken it to reading a text file of a story on a BBC Micro compared to being fed grapes by Zooey Deschanel, personally.

As long as Zooey Deschanel pops round with a bag of green seedless once the download completes, not a problem at all.

I meant on the download side of things. We are going to have 28+ people downloading 28 songs, and at about 5MB-ish a song does add up to a large chunk of Grim...'s bandwidth.

Mimi
Mr Chris
Mr Russ

You uploaded your mix for the CD swap. We've all had a listen and decided it wouldn't be worth letting you enter.

Gah! I knew I'd mess it up somehow. Several thousand apologies to you, Grim... Consider yourself added to Group A in the exciting draw for the group stages, which took place earlier in the opulent surroundings of My Kitchen. Here's delayed coverage of the proceedings:

Yes, all the big names are there. Apart from Grim...'s, because I'm rubbish. Curse these wretched eyes.

And into the pot they all go. Well, Ocean's Eleven mug.

And here's the final draw.

That draw in full for the hard of squinting:

GROUP A
-
Pundabaya
Runcle
Nik
Plissken
Nirejhenge
Mimi
Bobbyaro
Grim...

GROUP B
-
Scarysheep3000
Zardoz
Craster
Mr Russ
Mr Chris
imtypingonakeyboard
nervouspete

GROUP C
-
The Rev Owen
Kern
Zen-Chan
Mark X
Spinglo Sponglo!
Craig
Rodafowa

GROUP D
-
Shin
Sheepeh
myoptika
TsuMuch
Bluecup
WullieOoster
tossrStu

So, as previously iterated, if you can all get your first choice of song to me by next Wednesday at the latest - if everyone gives one before then, I'll start the voting earlier, but the voting for the first round will last until 11:59pm Tuesday 7th October no matter when it starts.

Erm, next Wednesday is the 1st of October, so voting can't end on Tuesday night...

how does the group stage work?

Is it all against all in all in one vote? Or, will there be a one on one each week? Do we know who we are playing each week?
