I'm only buying lunch at the moment, the office has cereal and we've all stayed so late during crunch time the company's been ordering take aways.

Near Nottingham.

Yeah. A slow cooker is awesome for turning the cheapest, roughest cuts of meat into something quite delicious. However you would have to buy one (which surely wouldn't be cheating) first, but they're only like a tenner or so. Chuck a bit of cheap, tough beef in there, add a glass or two of cheapo red plonk, a hearty spoonful or two of gravy granules, some rosemary, oregano, basil, soy sauce, and then leave it on 'high' for about 3 hours. Don't put anything acidic such as tomato in though, though of course feel free to add afterwards. Chuck your veg in about half-way through, your carrots, onion, any root veg.

Your reward will be a lovely and nourishing meal that's big enough for a few servings and is highly nutritious (although you do near-boil away a lot of nutrition from the veg, you retain the water itself, unlike when just boiling veg normally). You only need to clean one, easily washed pot. It requires absolutely no attention whilst cooking - I never bother stirring mine, after initially 'preparing' it, beyond adding veg later. It uses less electricity than a regular cooker. Lots of recipes online for some really interesting dishes - I've eaten a slow-cooked lasagne before. It was pretty darn good. Not tried any of that meself though. It's also extremely inexpensive - you really do want the cheapest, toughest cuts of beef, pork, lamb or similar, a decent cut will be wasted and probably just fall apart compeltely in there.

Important note: a slow-cooker can NOT be used to make a perpetual stew, and I've seen really nasty sickness befall someone who I used to live with, who thought it doable. Although you'll get multiple servings from your slow-cooker, I would suggest you freeze what you don't eat, and then simply reheat it the next day, in a saucepan, adding a small amount of extra water, and cook until well mixed.

Everyone has suggested lots of good ideas. I'd just like to repeat the suggestion of checking out 'ethnic' shops. In Wolverhampton for example, all the various asians shops all sell huge drums of rice, cooking oil, maybe other things - and for cheap (by volume). I'm not massively keen on rice or I'd have been a regular shopper of such things.

If you use any veg, and you aren't going to use it all, freeze the rest. I rarely use a whole onion or bell pepper, and whatever's left can be neatly popped into a plastic bag and frozen. Similarly, I sometimes will make a *massive* batch of ragu, and then distribute it amongst several zip-lock bags, which I then freeze*. It's the most cost-effective way to make masses of yummy sauce, and only needs tinned tomatoes, herbs, possibly a little cornflour for thickening (if you have any). Again, looking up recipes online is your friend. Then, as others have said, go crazy with the cheap pasta.

Don't buy chicken. It's the most wasteful and awkward of meat. Check out the clearance section in all of your local supermarkets - unless this would be cheating, you can find lots of fine food that simply has a slightly dented can, or because the product range has been deleted, for cheap. Don't be afraid to buy frozen or tined veg (or meat). As others have said, a little olive oil and seasoning can sometimes be all you need to make a tasty meal. Don't buy tomatoes, they're too expensive and unless you buy the more expensive kind, they're usually shit, in my opinion. Buy tinned tomatoes. If you like a tomato on your sandwich or salad - what the fuck are you doing eating salad, you rich git?

* picked up this tip from my former-culinary student girlfriend. It's obvious in hindsight, of course.

This has always been the problem I have with my slow cooker, which I really like using for the perfectly accurate reasons you lay out. Working a standard sort of 8am-6pm day means it's not really feasible to use the thing during the week at all, which is when its sheer convenience would actually be most appreciated. By definition I have more time to potter about in the kitchen on weekends and tend not to want to use it so much then.

Oh, that's the other problem with my slow cooker, it's too big, 4.5 litres I think. It makes the amount of veg chopping etc you need to do rather exhausting, and takes up rather a lot of room in the freezer for leftovers. I should have bought a smaller one.

Oh that was another thing, I recently discovered you can get bags of ready-prepared frozen vegetables in tesco for next to nothing. One kind has sort of chinese things in it and is perfect for stir-fry, another one makes insta-curry with the addition of a tin of tomatoes and a fresh onion and spices.

Normally I like to use fresh vegetables but it's handy if you need to make something quickly and it's almost suspiciously cheap.

Excellent words there CUS, I'm noting this all down and I'll investigate slow-cook options. As The Gaywood says though, working a 9-5 day will make it hard to prepare things in advance. Perhaps I can get a timer-plug and get my cook on automatically at 2pm, or something.

Baked beans. Beans are great in toasted sandwiches.

They all do this automatically, have built in timers that is, but this brings other problems with it. One option is to make the stew or whatever up the night before but (at least in my case) the crockpot fills my fridge, so that's not practical. You can make it up in the morning, although I find handling raw beef before breakfast slightly offputting.

And then you have to leave it, raw, sitting around for 6 hours or so out of the fridge, which is a little on the long side really. A friend of mine throws frozen chicken breasts in his late at night, lets them defrost during the day, then the slow cooker clicks on at 2pm or whatever; I think this is a recipe for food poisioning if you get the timing wrong.

You can prepare a stew/casserole at the weekend that will last six meals or so, and freeze the portions individually in bags.

In many ways I don't want to be too clever with this experiment. It's already been noted I could just buy tins of utter poo for < 10p each and survive on a pittance, but in reality people can't and won't do that. People are also unlikely to manually prepare every meal, so it sort of needs to be a representation of what an average person can realistically achieve, and how cheaply they can do it.

Average person? No such thing. What class are they? Are they in a largely rural area, or in the middle of a city? And so on.

I'm fairly average in that I'm not mega rich, or mega poor. I'm not a great cook but nor am I utterly incompetant. That sort of average. I've said to a few people, I'm not submitting this as a frigging research paper to Nature magazine, or anything, so I can be as vaguely specific as I like. :)

I am constantly annoyed by the big Sainsbury's posters that say "feed your family for a fiver!!!11!!!" over a picture of some cheap chicken or some such, neatly leaving out the possibility that people may wish to eat something other than just chicken in the course of a meal.

Also, when they put out their big posters for cheap booze they distressingly do not advertise them with the line "Get your family fried for a fiver!"

It may be horrendously cruel, but foie gras is lovely. It's a shame it can't be produced without such horribleness.

Veal is also lovely - although veal *can* be produced without cruelty, and is in that case no different, morally speaking, to lamb.

Indeed. British rose veal is absolutely fine. It is in fact less cruel to eat it than to not eat it, as any rose veal not eaten in this country gets exported abroad where it is raped by hairy furriners.

You've tried it then? For shame.

Not my fault, sir! I was in Dans Le Noir? at the time, so I didn't know what the fuck it was.
If it helps, I only eat free-range chicken now.
