Heh - I think here the captain (absent from the flight deck) and the first officer (the one asleep on the flight deck) were the two pilots.

Planes can autoland, though, so pilots are pretty much redundant for most of the time, and only needed when things might be a bit wrong. Like train drivers.

I'm pretty sure that's incorrect. I mean they do have autoland and autopilot systems that can take over certain aspects of the flight but they don't somehow magically automate everything. See all them switches and controls in a plane cockpit, they aren't for decoration.

I was talking to a pilot at a wedding this weekend, actually, and he said that air traffic control are more than capable of bringing modern planes in if both the pilots die, or something. The only thing they don't do on their own is take off (he said there was no reason why they couldn't, though).

I think she was extremely over-rated. The way she drank all that booze and took all that drugs means she was probably asking for it anyway. Although I can't deny she left a considerably body of music behind.
