Chase HQ disagrees.

Agreed, but that wasn't what I was saying. Do they not enhance the same game, hence making it better?

I can think of quite a few 8 bit games that were ported to the 16 bit formats where this was not the case. Sure people went "wow" at the time but these ports have been forgotten about. Head Over Heels on the 16 bit? The Amiga version of Feud?

Ironically C+VG awarded the ST and Amiga versions of Chase HQ slightly higher scores for those formats than the Speccy or CPC versions. And yet when RG did their roundup 6 months ago they panned the 16 bit versions and said go for the CPC and Speccy versions instead!

:this:

And it's ironic that at the time all the magazines gave the 16 bit versions equal or higher marks but history has shown that the Speccy and CPC versions are the ones to play.

Don't play the C64 version though, ever. You'll go blind.

I was talking specifically about Rainbow Islands, though, because you mentioned that it was equally good across 8-bit and 16-bit formats. I know there have been some terrible ports of 8-bit games to the Amiga and Atari, for example.

It's just that given the choice, I'd play Rez HD on the 360 over the PS2/Dreamcast versions any day, for another example. Games where they've fucked about with the gameplay as well, not so much, but if the game is exactly the same in every way except it has better graphics, I'd rather play that version.

Perhaps, but what's the point in playing something on my HD widescreen TV that was designed for SD and 4:3 ratio? It doesn't seem to make much sense when I have exactly the same game in ZOMGOVISION.

Take Head Over Heels. Do you rank the new PC version? Not really fair as it's a remake. The Speccy was the original but the CPC has the bells and whistles. It's hard, I think you have to mention all 3 mentioning that the PC remake is great but it is a remake and is astonishingly easy. The CPC version is the one to play but the Speccy version is the same without the polish.

With Rainbow Islands you just say, look the Amiga version is the best (although is there a PC Engine version?) but you also need to take a look at the Speccy version because it's great fun and you can load it onto your DS. Granted you can do that with the SMS and NES versions BUT THEY HAVE THE WRONG MUSIC AND ARE THEREFORE WRONGER THAN CAPTAIN WRONG IN WRONGVILLE DOING WRONG THINGS.

I think it's right to alert people to the best version but also anything else they should take a look at. It's more of an "education" for readers as we'll have alot of people who know little about some of these games reading.

That's a typical n00b answer.

What's the point in playing Head Over Heels on the CPC version when there is a high res PC remake available?

Because the CPC version is the authentic original game and plays better. The PC remake may look lovely but it is simply not the original. What's more it actually loses something in atmosphere with it's cartoon multicolour graphics over the 4 colour originals. Just feels too cartoony. Let alone the fact it has restarts and is easier.

There was a megadrive version, but I don't know if it was any good or not. I think there was a PC Engine version of Parasol Stars, but I'm not sure about Rainbow Islands.

Of course, 'better' graphics is subjective, too, you're right. Sounds like they've changed the gameplay in HoH too, though.

The puzzles are identical. It's just it doesn't quite translate. You have more resolution, somehow this seems to make things easier. What were pixel perfect puzzles feel easier, some of the skill needed just isn't required anymore. There are jumps in the original I still need to think about to get right but with slicker animation and a higher resolution you can literally breeze through some of the screens.

But... but... isn't the original arcade version of Rainbow Islands clearly the best?

We're restricting ourselves to home formats. Otherwise we're going to end up in a right old pickle.

Possibly not in the USA but in Japan:

Why? MAME is as easy to use as any other emulator.

As someone who recently wanted to play Space Harrier, I concluded that MAME was designed by sadists for sadists and maintained by sadists. Actually more user unfriendly than WinUAE which, to put it in basic terms, is about as friendly as a pitbull who's just had his nuts cut off.

Perhaps we should bias it towards home computers, but then the reviewer could say 'the arcade version is worth checking out on MAME should you be familiar with this particular emulator.'

If we were to include arcade games, how many would make the top 50 anyway? Of my favourite arcade games...

Out Run & Virtua Tennis (as in two separate games - not mowing down zombie Tim Henman with a fast car) - more features on the consoles
Soccer Brawl - owned on AES
Out Zone - didn't get a home release but wouldn't make my top 10 anyway
Phoenix - Um.. ok, that's an exception

As for Rainbow Islands, it'd be interesting to see how the Mega Drive version compared to the arcade as I believe it an 'extra' mode on the Mega Drive which had different enemies.

:this: . Because actually if arcade games were involved I would have voted differently.

A coin-up conversion will always have to make reference to the original IMO.

My own list, revealing all of your mistakes:

1) Super Mario Galaxy (Wii)
2) Planescape: Torment (PC)
3) Warioware Inc (GBA)
4) Super Smash Bros. Melee (Gamecube)
5) The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask (N64)
6) Monkey Island 2 (PC)
7) Rhythm Tengoku (GBA)
8) OutRun 2 (Arcade)
9) Donkey Kong Jungle Beat (Gamecube)
10) Metal Slug (Arcade)

I put Rhythm Tengoku at no. 7 in my list, so if Lave put it at no. 1 in his, shouldn't it have at least 14 points?

Sorry Chinny.

This would put Rhythm Tengoku at 25 or 26! THIS IS AN ESSENTIAL CHANGE AS IT WILL GIVE US KUDOS AMONGST THE WISE COOL GAMERS! I think my posts led Chinny to believe you only gave it one.

(Also Chinny you would probably love RT)

In unrelated news Mr. Karl is the best poster here, the rest of you SUCK. Shame on you all.

Except Chinny and Myp for doing all the hard work. They rock.

Right then. Here's where I ask for volunteers for each game. I want a paragraph on each game, maybe a screenshot for a few games from each batch of ten, and the odd game (anyone have an idea which ones?) we'll write a bit more on.

I'd plan it as five articles, each covering 10 games, published one per day for a week.

Below are the list of games; I will edit this post as people volunteer and write their names next to it. Chinny, can you put a link to this post from the first post in this thread please? For reference?

Still seeking volunters for:
(DG) 1. Resident Evil 4 - 46.5 *
8. Wario Ware - 30
(DG) 11. Elite - 26
17 Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 21.25 *
(DG) 34. Deus Ex - 12
40. Samurai Warriors 2 Empires - 10
(DG) 50. Syndicate - 9

These writeups are outstanding:

Head Over Heels
EVE Online (because its so heavily linked to the Elite games so its a nice trail in.
Street Fighter 2
Chaos
Half Life - possibly.
Pirates/R-Type or Syndicate - All worth it IMO but should only be one of them.

Done.

I'll take Rainbow Islands, Head Over Heels and R-Type for now because at least I know them well.

As for extended write ups outside of the top 10 I nominate:

Head Over Heels
NerdspaceEVE (because its so heavily linked to the Elite games so its a nice trail in.
Street Fighter 2
Chaos
Half Life - possibly.
Pirates/R-Type or Syndicate - All worth it IMO but should only be one of them.

Happy to do:

Tekken 3
X-Com
CoD4
FF7

I don't mind if someone else would prefer to do X-Com, but I would enjoy writing for the other three (though I suspect I'll have competition for FF7).

Bagsied it, yo. However, I don't think there's anything wrong with writing quite a bit for the "higher-up" games.
