Depends what you want to do with it. N95 plus points (off the top of my head) - price(?), camera, MMS, buttons, masses of software, remote synch, ability to act as a wireless access point (I found that out today), can pretend to be a lightsabre. iPhone plus points - pretty, great UI, great email stuff, better music player (although not by much, if you don't care about the swichy interface), better web browsing, will impress your mates who don't know about phones. The N95 is the better phone, but the iPhone is the better toy, if that makes any sense. |

See, my opinion is the opposite of Grim...'s. The N95 is the better toy (because of all the extra bits like software, remote sync, wireless AP abilities and pretending to be a light sabre) whereas the iPhone is the better phone because the actual phone-y bits of the iPhone are far, far better. Contacts and messaging (albeit without MMS) and the actual dialer itself are, IMO, much nicer on the iPhone. |

I've now stuck my iPhone on ebay. With the newer model coming out I suspect I may get less back than I paid for it, but I really cannot justify the expense now. Still, it was nice to have a lovely little toy while it lasted! |

Other than the fact that it sometimes goes a bit slow when I'm typing out a text message. But that's infinitely prefereble to the version 1.xx firmware, where half the songs I had on it wouldn't play all the way through. |

Bugs in the iPhone can be fixed. The design of Windows Mobile is fundamentally broken from the start. Stuff like the TyTN II and Advantage are really nice bits of kit held back by awful software. |

While it's a massive oversight on Apple's part, I didn't think it would be too bad because someone would just write an app that fixes it. Turns out that you're not allowed to have iPhone apps that run in the background, or that integrate with each other |

Copy and paste is on Apple's to-do list, but isn't a priority, apparently. The reality is probably more like Apple's trying to figure out a decent and intuitive gesture system for it. Personally, I'd rather Apple took longer and got it right, since once it's set, that's it. |

Yep. I can't personally think of a good way of doing it other than bringing up a context menu if you hold your finger down, like the terminal app does. It'd be really hard to avoid mixing it up with the zoom and pan gestures otherwise. |

Upgrade to iTunes 8, let it update your iPhone firmware and then run "quickpwn" to jailbreak it if you want. Seems to have solved a lot of the slowness and stability problems that came in with 2.0. I've heard bad things about iTunes 8 on Vista, and seeing as I'm happily running Vista 64-bit, I suspect it will be a cold day in hell before it runs reliably on it. 7.7 has a lovely redraw bug for a start. |

iTunes 8 on Windows offered lots of BSOD 'fun'. Apple's since fixed this, apparently, and there's now a happy happy update. It has to be said, Apple's QC has gone to shit this past year. |

I still believe they're horribly overstretched now that they're trying to run so many different businesses (computer maker, OS manufacturer, software developer, phone manufacturer, music distributor and media player manufacturer). |

Funnily enough, as I was reading about grid view taking over from gorgeous album stream, my new iTunes 8 popped up with... grid view. Now I just have to wait a million hours for it to 'process' the album art that was on 7. [edit] Oh, cover flow is there. Nice one. |
Author: | CraigGrannell [ Tue Sep 16, 2008 22:11 ] |
Post subject: | Re: "Cheap" iPhone |
Yeah, Cover Flow's not gone—it's Album View that's been replaced by Grid View. And Album View can be replicated by expanding the artwork column in List View. It's a pretty good compromise, really. And, for what it's worth, it took iTunes 8 here about five minutes to deal with everything it had to for my 12,000+ items. Grid View's artwork was done automatically, with little lag. |

Maybe I'm an idiot, but have they changed preferences for ripping CDs? Not that I ever change the method from Apple Lossless (apart from when I have to rip a WAV in order to chop it in Audacity), but I'm a bit OCD and have to check it's on Lossless every so often. Because, you know, looking at the Bitrate column would be too easy. [edit] And maybe I'm even more of an idiot, but is it now impossible to right-click on a cover in Cover Flow? |

Was that ever possible? If it was, it isn't now. As for the prefs, the dialog got simplified, but import settings shouldn't have changed during an install. |

Yeah, it used to be my short cut when seeing whether iTunes could automatically download the art. Rather than highlight all tracks, I'd just right-click on the cover space. |
