STOP VOLUNTEERING

I'll lose track if I don't write them down as we go along. I want to let the current list stand for a week. If everyone is happy with this list, I'll start calling for volunteers then, and create a post somewhere (new thread, maybe) where I can keep track of who is doing what.

I think it's there now unless anybody else has spotted any errors. To be honest if there are any mistakes they are now barely going to impact the placings. Even the amendments I just made changed hardly any positions.

The standout titles (with the extra wordage) should probably be some of the games which modern games players aren't so familiar with. Head Over Heels, Chaos, etc.
Stuff that might need explaining.

I would recommend that before anybody tries to write anything to take a look at the official YS list that can be seen here:

http://worldofstuart.excellentcontent.com/ys100/ystop100.htm

+ we do need to mention the formats and restrict ourselves to home versions that people can actually easily play.

My ten were:

Tekken 3
Call of Duty 4
Final Fantasy VII
Supercars 2
Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 3
Super Mario Kart
Grand Theft Auto III / Vice City
Halo 2
Civilization 4
X-Com: UFO Enemy Unknown (game went by many aliases, you know the one I mean)

Happy to write endlessly about any of the above.

:)

See, this is precisely the reason why I didn't submit a top ten. Because I knew I'd forget loads of games that should really belong on there. Not only that, I have absolutely no idea what my favourite game ever would be, and I'm equal parts envious of/baffled by people who can name their top game right off the bat without even thinking about it.

I think the best I'd ever be able to manage would be a "top two dozen in no particular order" and even then I'd probably forget at least another dozen classics.

Thing is that it's pointless getting hung up on such things as the best games will always rise to the top anyway. Get into the top half of the chart and you are getting multiple votes for the individual games. So for a game to get anywhere in the chart at least one other person has to agree with you, or in many cases two or three other people. The top few games had lots of people vote for them.

I have a suggestion.

As a few people have said that they could have submitted their games in any order, or indeed did submit them without any bias. Why not have the 1st game getting 20 points, and then decrease it to so the 10th game gets 11 points. (or 30 to 21, 50 to 41 etc)

This is almost certainly an excellent idea, although I wouldn't blame Chinny if his bothered points are now nearly all spent. However, if he's willing to trust me with the meta-data, I'd be happy to do the recalculations myself, just to see what that list would look like.

I took a look (as I wouldn't mind writing a paragraph for one or two on the list), and it's a good example of how these things should be done. I wonder though, did anyone else notice that Tetris (which must surely be among the purest, most beautiful and addictive games ever made) was only 49th on the list? Seems a bit low to me.

No. Because you've seen the list now so you are influenced. There was an extended period of voting with lots of reminders. Everyone had their chance.

I've only seem a couple of suggestions for further alterations, but I'm not very receptive to be honest as it is suddenly looking like a much more balanced list. You can go too far with these things and end up messing up something that is now looking good.

There are game series in the Top 50 that I've combined votes together, so it's still not right as it shouldn't have as many points for that (I added them at 1.00 + 1.00, not 1.00 + 0.25). Tony Hawks' Advanced Standup Comedy Simulator being one of them.

Inspired by the list and the fact that the 3rd in the series was trailered at E3 , i thought i'd have a look at picking up ICO and Shadow of the Collosus

Went to goozex and they were low points values so added them finding out i'm about 60th in line so went to ebay ...... are you serious ? , 30 / 40 / 50 quid for old PS2 games ??? (okay i'm just spoiled but i dont pay that for new 360 games)

I also have a suggestion for the article which is to highlight what sytems you can play these things on , and what a rough price for them would be (and if they are emulatable).

e.g. The Legend of Zelda : A Link to the past

Can be played on the original SNES (cart from about £10 on Ebay) , or was remade on the GBA (again cart from about £10) , or both versions can be emulated

The Legend of Zelda : Orcharina of Time

Can be played on the original N64 (Cart from about £6 on Ebay) , or was released as part of a Zelda compilation on the Gamecube which can also be played on the Wii (around £12 on ebay) , or can be picked up on the Wii Virtual console (800points?) , can be emulated.

(thinks fast) Volunteering to cover certain games, sure. I need to keep track of that. But fact finding you can just do.

(did I get away with it?)

Anyway, we need a finalised list first.

So SoMI has had 0.25 of MI2 and CoMI's points added but has dropped a place? I think looking at this list has made me go a bit funny.

Well in the new list it's 5th with 37.5 points, and in the old list (first post) it's 5th with 36 points.

Only the next game down contributes not all the games in the series. Using all the games in the series still weighted some games far to heavily even using 25%. Because some games have massive amounts of other titles in a series whereas others only have 1 other game. By definition a "series" is more than a single game, so just taking the votes from the next game down is an equalizer. Otherwise we end up with what I named "The Mario Problem".

But yeah, it's making me go funny as well. But I think I'm now happy.

I've played 27 out of the top 50 and like all of them to varying degrees. Does that make my taste in games awesome?

I see we've lumped all the 3D GTA games together. I thought we were just picking the top ranked one and adding a quarter of the votes? I really liked GTA III and IV, but found SA a bit dull (for example).

Ignore the list on the first post. That was the pre-corrected list.

Both Civ and Monkey Island dropped points. I can't trace it back now BECAUSE MY HEAD IS HURTY!

I looked at it and they all attracted low votes.

IV came top but III wasn't far behind and SA also got 3 points. So I'll alter it to whatever you lot want. It's just all three seemed awfully close in the vote count.

Should leave that to the reviewer. The listed formats should be what we recommended. For example the PC Engine is probably the definitive home version of R-Type but would we seriously suggest not taking a look at the splendid Speccy version?

Rainbow Islands is cool across lots of formats. I'd just say 8 bit/16 bit.

Judge each one on its individual merits although IMO we should restrict ourselves to home formats. And if anyone says the CPC version of Head Over Heels isn't the definitive one I'll punch them on the nose (actually I'd say CPC/Spectrum + the PC remake).

I only played Rainbow Islands on the Amiga. Surely the 16 bit ones like that should win purely because they have better graphics? Remember I was not an eight bit gamer at all (except for the NES), so I could be heinously wrong, here.

I shouldn't be the best platform for the game though; it should be the best platform to play the game on today. That might rule out obscure platforms where emulators or ROMs are hard to come by.

In any event, I think the writer of that game's paragraph gets the final say, to avoid an awful lot of discussion.

Certainly not. Your joystick is rubbish.

Clearly not:

It's OK. The majority of the games in the list don't have CPC versions.

I bagsy The Secret of Monkey Island, then, seeing as it was my number one. Here's my full list, anyway:

1. The Secret of Monkey Island (Amiga)
2. Monkey Island 2: LeChuck's Revenge (Amiga)
3. Sensible World of Soccer 96/97 (Amiga)
4. Forza Motorsport 2 (Xbox 360)
5. Half-Life (PC)
6. Doom (PC)
7. Championship Manager 01/02 (PC)
8. Resident Evil (Gamecube)
9. Gravity Power (Amiga)
10. Portal (Xbox 360)

I completely forgot about Lemmings, which would've knocked Portal from number 10.

I'm actually surprised that no one's voted for Vice City at all. I was expecting it to be the most popular.

Vice City is my favourite GTA game so far. I think it's the setting more than anything, mind.

Better graphics do not make a better game. I really don't think we should get hung up on formats. Just say what the game is available on and then use the body to recommend specific versions. Fact is there isn't much gameplay wise between any of the 8 bit or 16 bit versions of Rainbow Islands and they are all great on their respective formats.

Agreed, but that wasn't what I was saying. Do they not enhance the same game, hence making it better?
