One does not simply plug an ethernet port into the phone loop.

It's to plug the ADSL socet of a router into a faceplate on a wall. I'm being hand delivered some sort of filter in case the faceplate isn't there. Or something.

I hate Miller. Introducing Will Eisner's The Spirit. An amusing and thrilling comic book steeped in a beautiful hybrid of film noir and RKO serial. Painstakingly drawn but fast and funny artwork that completely revolutionised how comic books were done. Most of all, The Spirit had a social conscience. The dapper young and nigh-indestructible detective (yet vulnerable endearingly to clonks on the head) always looked out for the underdog, the unpriviliged, and Eisner frequently used the comic to point towards social injustice and the hidden crime of poverty. And it was funny, and charming and sad and exciting.

Then Miller does a film of it. The Spirit wears black and talks in crap Batman style voiceover. The film is stuffed with misogyny and mean-spiritedness, pun not intended. It's crappily directed. The jokes are purile and toilet based. Samuel L. Jackson rotten-hams it in an appallingly indulged way.

Fuck you Miller.

Miller has always struck me as a bit of a penis, and this recent little outburst has confirmed it.

That article, however, is absolute pish. Anyone who with a straight face contends that Gladiator is "is an allegory about George W Bush's candidacy for president" is a thundercunt of the first water. It's like reading a lefty sixth former's media studies essay.

Oh yeah, I completely agree with the article being bobbins. It doesn't even have a decent arguement looking into why Miller is such a terrible hack and a massive cock. The trouble is, despite the dodginess, 300 is still kinda fun. True Lies was fun. Gladiator was fun. Even Avatar was fun. If these films WEREN'T fun and well-made there wouldn't be a problem as no one would see them. It's ironic that the article in question is as badly researched as Miller's outburst.

Ooh. Someone's kicking off in the library. Where's Clint when you need him?

I managed to struggle on past that part but had to completely throw in the towel when I go to:

Quote:
"...when so many high-profile releases are based on a medium, the comic book, made expressly to engage the attentions of pre- and just post-pubescent boys. At least comic books themselves are so politically dim-witted, so pie-in-the-sky idealistic as to be hard to take seriously."

Yes, because of course the attitudes and political complexity of all the output rendered in an entire medium can be generalised into a single sentence. You towering fuck knuckle.

I've never really bought into these any of these ideas about what popular films as allegory (except for ones where the director has at some point declared that as his intention, obviously). They only seem to emerge a long time after the fact. I don't remember anyone at the time saying that Gladiator was about George Bush.

Were people really watching sci-fi films in the 50s and 60s because they were actually terrified of communists? Were they fuck. It was the space age and those sorts of themes captured the public imagination. Then thirty years later some stupid hack came up with a theory and it gets unquestioningly repeated ever since. Even despite the fact that really only a couple of the popular films from the time fit the theory in any way.

While you're at it check up on Indian burial mounds in the back garden.

Sucks to hear about your dream home being somewhat more of the Lynch-dream variety. I've got a fantastically lovely landlady, happily, who fixes up stuff pronto. I know this helps you not, and that you now desire to clock me squarely in the dial, but she really is something. "Shower plughole backing up? Oh no! I'll get the plumber around tomorrow. And while I'm at it I'll get him to take a look at the sink too, even though you never asked. And drop off a new rug for the living room, just 'cos it'll look nice."

Could be one of the only viable solutions. As it has affected the way I stand, let alone my gait, it makes my knees hurt, too.

When you come up again, there's a couple more nice places we've found around here, and up the railway, too. We could go to the North Bar in Leeds, as that's pretty awesome, or go to Otley or Ilkley and do Yorkshire Real Ale pubs. It'll be super fun.

Bad luck, fella. My knee's a bit gammy at the moment but no where near as bad as that. Hope it's feeling better soon.

I'm back oop North in Batley, for Christmas, visiting the 'rents. Could hook up with you in Leeds for some beers, if you like, or in Huddersfield. Can do Otley too, but bit of a bus journey. If you're ever out in Huddersfield drinking I recommend the Head of Steam (best station pub ever, and the best in Huds all told) the Vox Bar and the Rat and Ratchet on Chapel Hill. And the Nook in Holmfirth.

Droplets on the chimney breast will probably be condensation. Warm damp air in room meets cold air in flue.

Yeah, I was surprised too. I'd never before seen a film so bad that it made me angry, so it was a new experience. I really wanted to walk out (which would have been another first), but wanted to instead tough it out so I cold at least say I'd seen the whole thing in case anyone challenged me. That's right - while I was watching it, I was doing so in case people asked me why I thought it was the worst film ever. I honestly don't think will ever see another Gerard Butler or Zack Snyder film. I can't bring myself to do it. I know you enjoy some actioners that I don't, like the Expendables, but this is on another level. That's just a crap film, but this is actual hatred. Like, I love cinema, so I don't know how cinema could repay me in this way.

An aesthetic and psychological betrayal.
