Oh and because the whole programme seemed light on confrontation, the whole section about not using the Texen PR company because they didn't want to wreck the business, seemed somewhat self indulgent. Derren's a nice man really: we get it.

Just watched yesterday's show.
More or less, the sequel to 'The Heist'. Very enjoyable, if a little disturbing.

I didn't enjoy this so much as The Heist, which I really bought into. I don't know why, but everything seemed too hesitant. The long time he took between receiving the signal to acting on it just seemed like he wasn't sure if he was supposed to do it right then - like someone who has received a stage direction yet still turns to ask the director 'now?'

I couldn't help but shake the feeling that this was just a guy who wanted to be on TV, and did what he needed to play along and get his 15 minutes of fame.

That's why they did the polygraph test, to show that when he did these actions, he had no knowledge of doing them and he wasn't just faking it.

And what about the fact he was in ice water for 15 minutes? Can't really fake that too easily without some kind of mind over matter.

That was partly what made me wonder if this wasn't the conclusive test it was made out to be. I watched a program a while ago where two men sat in ice baths for half an hour, one was fat and the other thin, to see how their bodies reacted. They both managed to sit there for roughly the same amount of time, both longer than the guy in the show, and neither under hypnosis. Sheer stubbornness, perhaps. And stubbornness is something that many people who want their five minutes of fame possess in large quantities - that and the ability to endure, whether that be humiliation or discomfort. Ever see 'I'd do anything to be on TV' or whatever it was called (was it part of The Word? It was a long time ago, anyway)

I've just watched it, quite enjoyable. Especially the bit that Grim... and Kern liked.

I assume the audience had been told that something strange was going to happen. I'd have thought that there'd be a bit more panic ensuing if they thought someone there was a gunman on the loose.

I figured that people are so used to things being set up that they just assumed it was a set up. I'd imagine that if you did it someone where there is a war on there would be a lot more panic.

I wouldn't take the word of any polygraph test to be honest.

What I liked about this one was all the tricks/hypnotic games DB played throughout it. I loved the thing with the shoe, and the iceberg and acid tests reminded me so much of the early shows where he was just doing cool stuff for no real reason other than because he was Derran Brown and he could.

Next time I go live firing, I want to go into 'The Marksman' mode...

Of course hypnotism is a real and provable thing, and to the best of anyone's knowledge and using the most stringent tests available to us we are certain that the annoying grinning man was indeed in a trance-like state and that his actions were caused not by his own will but by the ideas implanted whilst he was in a hypnotic state.

This all said, Mimi is beautiful and intelligent and right to question me. the rest of you (apart from Goddess Jasmine) are blind fools.

Worth it for the final few sequence and the 'reveal'.

But, went on a bit too long, I think.

Hell, yes.

Most of the time I was watching it thinking "Jesus christ, that's fucking horrible thing to do" and then giggled a bit.

I just finished his 'Confessions of a Conjurer'. It wasn't very good - far too rambling for my tastes*. Stick to 'Tricks of the Mind'.

*And he repeatedly commits the unpardonable sin of having long digressions in the footnotes that spread over several pages. If something is that important, it should go in the main body of the text. Grr...

I really enjoyed that. And, half way through, there was a knock at the door, and a man was there with "the food you've ordered". Which we hadn't. But for a moment, I was very suspicious.

I suspect it was only you and I watched it, everyone else is playing Skyrim.

It was a *very* northern town, though, wasn't it? The journalist's shorthand actually said "no, I don't believe this either"

I initially doubted the existence of Todmorden... I recently finished his latest book and it said that he knew German, and naming a town 'death murder' would be very Derren Brownesque.

Also, until yesterday, I had never heard of Skyrim. Sounds like a Russian airline.

It's just down the road from here, past the 'Bridge.

TRUFAX

The pub in Friday's programme (Jack's House) was originally named "The Shoulder of Mutton" and between 1825 and 1910 was run by Thomas Ingham and, after his death, his daughter, Ann Ingham. Thomas Ingham was my great, great, great Grandfather.

TRUFAX

Todmorden is definitely real otherwise my family history is very screwed up!

My heart swelled with pride at how incredibly Lancashire Wayne the butcher was - what a hero!

only recorded 10 minutes of it as it clashed...

At least it's repeated in a bit (after some teenagers who think they are vampires and werewolves, that can go out in the sunshine, and eat garlic, and touch crucifixes and don't transform in a full moon and stuff!)

New Derren Brown show on at 21:00 on Channel 4.
Apparently, he convinces his victim that the world's ended. Hilarity ensues, or something.
