Somewhere in Nintendo headquarters is a flash drive with a Powerpoint presentation on it entitled "Target Market for Great Success". It only has one slide, and that's just a picture of Mimi. :)

So... Now the BEST games list is completed, when do we start the WORST games list?

Rather than hire expensive celebrities to pimp their games, Nintendo should just ask Mimi and Monkey to do the ads instead and just pay them in Animal Crossing furniture or something.

Speaking of which, I bought Animal Crossing for the Wii on May 1st and I've yet to open it yet... Mimi would be disgusted!

I AM outraged! Pop it on - everything is lovely in A/C at the moment - there's a whole host of new birds and insects now. I have a Monkey in my town now! He's called Champ! That's the two of us in my avatar :)

I'm just replanting out my flower garden now according to Dimrill's recommendations :D

Also, Blathers was very impressed when I caught this and presented it to him:

I did, and I placed it high! In your face, haterz!

this was my list

1 - Street Fighter 2 (SNES)
2 - Mario Kart (snes)
3 - Goldeneye (n64)
4 - ICO (ps2)
5 - Metal Gear Solid (ps1)
6 - CoD 4 (360)
7 - Way of the Samurai (PS2)
8 - Half Life (PC)
9 - Deus Ex (PC)
10 - Cannon Fodder (Amiga)

I chose them as being representative of those games Ive most enjoyed and spent most time with, with a couple thrown in for just being unique or I felt somewhat standout from other types of their genre.

Blue text because this needs to be read and understood.

So what I've done is taken the list as voted for by you. I've taken the top game from each "series" and then added to it 25% of the votes from the next same series game down. All the other games from the series are then scrubbed from the list.

Why 25%? Well I did a few experiments and it was the amount that didn't hugely impact the list while giving a boost to games such as the GTA series.

I have used the patented CHINNYLOGIC [tm] to work out which games should be bundled together. It's hard to justify Elite and Frontier being bundled together, but there's no reason to play Sensi when you can play SWOS. Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands are part of the same series but you could easily justify telling people to play both.

My interpretation is that where games have been bundled, the most voted for game is taken to represent the series. So we say go and play Secret Of Monkey Island but also check out other games in the series. So people don't need to feel pissed that there aren't umpteen Mario platformers in the list now. Talk glowingly about how Galaxy is the latest in a really lame series and Sonic is better a fantastic list of Mario platformers.

The new *ENTIRELY PROVISIONAL AND PROBABLY FULL OF MISTAKES** list looks like this:

1. Resident Evil 4 - 46.5 *
2. Final Fantasy VII - 45.5 *
3. Sensible World Of Soccer - 41.5 *
4. Call Of Duty 4 - 37
5.The Secret of Monkey Island - 34.75 *
6. Goldeneye 007 - 32
7. OutRun 2/2006: Coast 2 Coast/Online Arcade [3] - 30 *
8. Wario Ware - 30
9. Super Mario Galaxy - 28.25 *
10. Doom - 27
11. Elite - 26
12. Fallout 3 - 24
13. XCOM: UFO Defense - 24
14. Advance Wars Dual Strike - 23
15. Rock Band/Rock Band 2 - 22
16. Civilisation IV - 25.25 *
17 Zelda: Ocarina of Time - 21.25 *
18. Ico - 21
19. Bubble Bobble - 19
20. Street Fighter 2 - 19 *
21. Super Mario Kart/Mario Kart Advance - 18.25
22. Baldurs Gate 2 - 17
23. Chaos - 16
24. Shenmue 1/2- 15.5 *
25. Half Life - 15
26. Frontier: Elite 2 - 13
27. Animal Crossing - 13
28. Tekken 3 - 12.5
29. Rainbow Islands - 12
30. Crackdown - 12
31. Gravity Power - 12
32. Perfect Dark - 12
33. Deus Ex - 12
34. Grand Theft Auto Series (3D Versions) - 11.5 *
35. Osu! Tatake! Ouendan! - 11
36. Rhythm Tengoku - 11 *
37. Championship Manager 01/02 - 10
38. Head Over Heels - 10
39. Landstalker - 10
40. Samurai Warriors 2 Empires - 10
41. World Of Warcraft - 10
42. Hypersports - 10
43. Kings Bounty - 10
44. EvE Online - 10
45. Transport Tycoon - 10
46. Quake - 10
47. Heroes of Might and Magic 3 - 10
48. Pirates! - 10
49. R-Type - 9
50. Syndicate - 9

* Denotes game that has had vote contributions from other games in the series.

NB: Luckily Tony Harts Advanced Skateboarding Simulator was the only game on 9 points to get votes from 2 people. So that solves that problem.

NB2: Lots of GTA games attracted low numbers of votes so you can bicker among yourselves about which one is the "must play" or if we say all of them from 3 onwards.

I knew I should have submitted a list comprised entirely of Mario platformers.

And I'm glad to see I'm not the only one who voted for Rhythm Tengoku, you Final Fantasy perverts.

I voted for

    SWOS (Amiga)
    The Lost Vikings (Amiga)
    Vib Ribbon (PSone)
    Bubble Bobble (Arcade)
    Geometry Wars 2 (XBLA)
    Worms (PC)
    Unreal Tournament (PC)
Skate 2 (360) (Same as Skate, but better)
N/N+ (PC/XBLA) (Essentially the same game, but on different formats with different levels)
    Apprentice (Amiga)

They aren't really in any order since I couldn't make my mind up. My criteria for picking games was I had to have played them for ages & still enjoy playing them.

I agree! You've done a top job here chap.

Although I don't agree with all the games on the list (final fantasy for instance) that's what it's all about isn't it? Resident Evil 4 is a worthy winner in my opinion! I find it kind of funny/ironic that it was first released on Nintendo's worst selling console.

That's easy. It was never released in Europe until the PS1 was on its last legs, and even then it was a really shitty port, with huge loading times.

I suppose so. I just always thought that people here were more 'hardcore' than me (which, I have no doubt, this one event does not change), and some would have played it on their SNES through an adaptor.

Apparently not. ?:|

My first console was a Colecovision, then a huuuuuuge gap until the PS1. For which I had/have about 8 games. So SNES modding was frowned upon by my teenage Amiga owning soul. In fact, it took until the GameCube for me to enjoy console gaming.

Would it be insulting to say to someone with 9000+ posts that I'm too busy living my incredibly exciting life to spend time posting on Internet message boards?

Also, I am unable to access Beex from work.

Also also, I'm very shy, and am scared of mean Internet people insulting me or my mother.

So yeah, those are my reasons.

I think we have a demographic bias here, though, to people who spent the 8-bit and 16-bit eras more with computers rather that consoles.

My original forays into console territory were brought on by PC gaming being ultra-boring. The GameCube provided games that were unusual and unique, whereas all the PC could offer was to make me spend another 200-300 quid in order to see the detail in Advanced Stamp Collector 2002. By the time something came out on the PC I wanted to play (Oblivion), my PC ran it like a dog. To even think about dropping 500-grand on another PC to play it just a little better when I could get an Xbox360 for a fraction of the cost.. well, there's no contest.

I enjoyed them and played them on my SNES with a Super Pro Fighter + :-)

However for actual RPG's I preferred the early Ultima series on the Atari and C64 and on the SNES i preferred the action RPG types like Zelda and Secret of Mana.

I do remember having the import cartridge of FFII (i think) and trying to exchange it for the US version of Mario Kart and being refused in one of those trade stalls in the barras

But I were one of the smarterer kids at skewl.

I thought about getting an Amiga, quite a lot. But the combination of price and SFII port-shitness kept me away. Always envied the Amiga kids' version of Syndicate though.

Mana was the first RPG I ever played (J-RPG anyway. I was never a fan of FPRPGs). I remember reading issue 15 of Super Play and wondering about the mechanics of it. There were no platforms or owt. Then came xmas 1993 and my cartridge of the game, and I was blown away like I had been by no video game before or since.

Then came xmas 1994 and, though the level of eye-openness was less ('hey, these monsters aren't even animated!'), FFIII became my new fave. I think.

[edit] I used the Gamesmaster adapto/er. It was great. I remember Super Play always wondering which one was best - does it play this or that - and I never had any problems with mine. Played Chrono Trigger, Front Mission, Super SFII. Top stuff.

Urban Chaos? That was repetitive shit! I played it all the way through stupidly believing it was suddenly going to get better, but it never did. Every baddy could be defeated by just doing a sliding kick followed by hitting 'O' to handcuff him. Then do the same to his mates. Forever.

Chinny, mate I only bringing this up because I'm anal and you can totally ignore it, but if I gave Rhythm Tengoku my number 1 spot and Karl gave it at least 1 point how come it has only got 10 points?

have I fucked up and by listing my games 1 to 10 you taken that to mean the points I give each rather than that being my top ten (with 1 being best)?

Sorry!

No probs. I'll double check it for you later. Just back from another cycle ride (over 60 miles in total over the weekend) and now have to go out again.

Myp and I know there are mistakes in there. It was a painful list to compile. From memory there were 40 or so votes and some people did insist on doing things in an odd order, or even give a commentary on why they had voted for each game which made extracting the games prone to error at times. We have checked and checked again but the one thing where errors may slip through was on the initial counting.

Sorry!

This is the same for my list.. I put them in 1-10 order, meaning that my number 1 was my best game and 10 was my least best.. not that 1 should get one point.

Another question Chinny. I voted for Tekken 2, but Tekken 3 is in the list and isn't marked as having extra votes.
In fact, I just checked and it's still on 12 points. It was 9th in my list, so I demand the list be updated to give the Tekken series the extra 0.5 points it deserves. ;)

Just in case it's not obvious that I'm joking, I think now would be a good time to say thanks for putting the effort in to do this. :attitude:

Edit - I also did mine 1-10 in order of position, rather than intended points, but seeing as nobody else has admitted to voting for Shenmue 2, I think Chinny read mine correctly.

Well let's just say you're a very silly mon.

I'm not convinced that was really the case in the mid-late 90s though, which is when the PC games that are on my list were about.

I think the PC had its first golden age of goodness about 1990-1994 (give or take), and then something of a resurgance about 1999-2002.

Well no, obv as that's when I were playing them too. That's why Curse of Monkey Island rode high, and I twat myself for forgetting Xcom Apoc. But it's also when PC games didn't cost the earth to be able to see something that was a complete non-game graphical tech demo. That era produced Carmaggeddon 2 too, which narrowly missed off my top ten.

I have a suggestion.

As a few people have said that they could have submitted their games in any order, or indeed did submit them without any bias. Why not have the 1st game getting 20 points, and then decrease it to so the 10th game gets 11 points. (or 30 to 21, 50 to 41 etc)

Because at the moment a game that appeared near the bottom of 5 people's top 10 isn't going to be above a game which was in 1 person's top spot.

Like I say, just a suggestion.

Cool beans, sorry to be anal.

Also I thought it might be nice if we could 'crowd source' a paragraph of so to be written for each game. I would do a one for Rhythm Tengoku at least. Thought that again is more work for you in the long run man. So I dunno.

I will take Grim... and Lave's suggestion to write this up as an UpToJump article. We need a paragraph about each of the games in the top 50, preferably written by someone who voted for it. We'll do them 10 at a time and I'll be calling for volunteers to write up the paragraph. I'll do the co-ordination; myp and chinny have done enough in this thread already!

I'm happy to do Head Over Heels and Rainbow Islands given that I'm quite limited in choice as my games knowledge comes to a halt in about 1995.

What format should screenshots be in?

I would suggest a strict word limit for all write-ups perhaps with expanded articles for the top 10 + a few selected highlights elsewhere if required (games we as a forum feel are important even if they didn't get lots of votes).

And the Street Fighter 2 article *must* mention the fact there was a Speccy conversion. Yes the multiload made it impossible to play but it was the last release from a major software house on the Speccy, it isn't a bad conversion all things considered and only a madman would have attempted to convert the game and yet they managed it (with a hideous multiload natch).

Hmmm, I hadn't considered screenshots. I'd suggest just grabbing 2-3 for each set of 10 articles; really more about breaking up the text than about showing the games off. In that spirit, I don't think format matters.

Agreed. For numbers 11-50, it should just be a paragraph each, nothing more. I'd like it to be from the perspective of someone arguing why this game deserves its place.

Giving more detail to the top 10 and maybe some random others is a great idea.

I really want to do Rhythm Tengoku so put me down for that.

Oh I could also do Frontier because then it would be a qualified astrophysicist reviewing it. Which would be funny. To me.

And I'll do UFO Enemy Unknown if no one else wants to. But I only voted it 8th so I'm happy to be usurped by someone who loved it more.

STOP VOLUNTEERING

I'll lose track if I don't write them down as we go along. I want to let the current list stand for a week. If everyone is happy with this list, I'll start calling for volunteers then, and create a post somewhere (new thread, maybe) where I can keep track of who is doing what.
